I wouldn’t say this it’s a kids show; it’s a HUMAN show. I’m 30 and still go back to rewatch this masterpiece. Lots of thought provoking ideas, especially this one.
I don't think Princess Bubblegum is selfish per se, but definitely egotistic. Everything she does she does on behalf of others but she also assumes that she is always right. She simultaneously puts everyone's needs ahead of her own while giving them no autonomy and making all of their decisions for them. She's a benevolent tyrant, and the series is going to play with that a lot going forward
considering how old she is and how much she's gone through you can understand her being the control freak she is. Between the apocalypse, her family and a few other things i can't say because it would spoil Nux. Bubblegum eventually concludes that the only way for things to be safe and peaceful she needs to micromanage all of society.

She literally made copies of herself/candy people since before she ever started the whole "Kingdom" thing. Lemon grab was after, she made him intentionally dumb so he doesn't turn out like her family, same with most/all candy people.

True. She also didn't just make him for fun. She made him hoping he would be a good heir. He was not. But she gave him his own kingdom anyway and still took care of him. The same with Gilliad(sp?). She didn't make him/her (?) just because. She wanted an heir. It just keeps failing. The others she made to be friends with. Others she does seem to make as an experiment. Nux casually forgetting that the entire reason Lemongrab 2 exists is because Bubblegum cared enough to make a companion for the first Lemongrab because he was feeling lonely.
If you really think about, there’s a lot wrong with Bubblegum, but she has a lot of love for her creations, faults and all. Sometimes people are made evil by circumstance; others just because they can. That’s the whole point of Lemon John here. He learned compassion through a beating heart because he was a faulted creation and was born that way and only given the chance through artificial means. The lemongrabs don’t have that biological defect, implying that they always were capable of compassion, but choose otherwise, hence “There’s nothing wrong with them; they are just like that.”
@@estebanbr7596 I guess, but the current hypothesis is that she can’t do anything else. The whole point of that episode was her trying to understand what she did wrong with him. He can’t “act normal” because his lemon heart doesn’t see that as normal. There was *technically* nothing wrong with him, so there was nothing to fix like with Lemon John. The solution is that if he can’t get along with normal candy, he would only get along with himself, hence, the second lemon grab.
@estebanbr7596 The first Lemongrab was feeling lonely but was unable to get along with others. The second Lemongrab was in no way worse than the original. He gave the first Lemongrab companionship and made him satisfied.
1:30 true very true, no-one asks to be born and the circomstances of ones childhood are not theyre fault, it is however entirely on each of us to decide what to do with the lives we are given its no-ones responcibility but ours to have meaning and worth to our lives, none of us are owed anything.
I'll say this much: all the lemon creatures are not Princess Bubblegum's fault. Lemongrab is essentially and by this point is entirely aware she is better than he is at creating a fairly self-sustaining ecosystem. He lacks the capacity for self-delusion to believe his creations are better... and he knows she would have been willing to attempt making him subjects had he expressed the need. This was a result of him deliberately choosing not to involve her... and the reason he hasn't already tried a coup is because he also realizes that generally she's a better leader. His motivation in not involving her, possibly after the first couple of attempts at making candy life that turned out this way, was spite. She bears some responsibility for his base capacity for spite, but he's also never either attempted to work out a more effective means of self-management to avoid his driving need to indulge in it nor has he even asked for help with that - and he is aware it's a destructive tendency that isn't doing him any good either.
It's scary how acurate your thoughts were to mine fr I've seen less scary scenes in Made In Abyss like even Bondrewd vs PB I didn't think I could have any more sympathy and love for the lemongrabs both 1 & 2, they deserved better and will always be up in my top 10 characters of all time
What the Lemongrabs did is the equivalent of a child who has and can make no friends, they created some. Only difference is they made friends that were lemony, not imaginary.
- Lemonjon like the Lemongrab is also voiced by Justin Roland & he could be a reference to John Lennon like in the episode of the Simpsons called "The Bart of War" where there is a soda based on the names of The Beatles with one being called "John Lemon" & speaking of the title card is a reference to a scene in the Simpsons episode "Bart Vs Thanksgiving" - The Lemon Head who is screaming as his skin is ripped off is a reference to "The Thing" when George Bennings becomes possessed by the Thing
I took the ending more as, she is accepting that they are how they are, and they don't need to be "fixed" or be "normal". They're non-neurotypical, and she doesn't think there's anything wrong with that.
Oh by God's beard, why did I watch this? Why on Earth did I watch this again? Why relive the terror of the Lemonculi of Lemon Castle? What drove me to watch this and relive this FUCKING episode!?! WHY DID I WANT TO SEE THE HORRID PROMETHEANS BORN OF LEMONGRABS' HANDIWORK!?! Oh yeah, Nux commentary.
For so long I've waited... And now I wish I waited a little longer... this one hurts... it hurts real bad. I am a product of neglect and despair from an emotionally absent mother and nonexistent father... to see stuff like this depicted at all, let alone fron a show I once watched myself, so lovingly and unknowing... man. Just... fuck. I'm tired boss... But it is pretty funny that I can deeply relate to crazy ass characters like Lemongrab and Tim Burton's Willy Wonka lmao literally what is a family hahaha... ha... does the nightmare never end...?
Yo nux, IDK if your still doing lore dives buuuut ima just do this for it's great characters and animations, day 1 of asking nux to react to all ZZZ story cutscenes.
Not in itself. I mean survival of any kinda requires selfishness. Though I think Nux is using the negative connotation to make non-negative actions seem negative because he wants pb to be the big villain
I don't think it is always selfish to have a kid. It would be selfish for me because I physically can't care for one (physically disabled). But if someone wants kids because they truly love life and want to share that with a child that isn't selfish at all. They are sacrificing their own life, time, energy, money, etc so someone else can love life too.
Nature AND Nurture. They are like that because they were made like that. Any immoral behavior was then never corrected. As shown here, she could have changed the way they think, and thus, the way they act.
But she couldn't. She did try to change them. It didn't work though. And erasing their brain doesn't change their behavior. They were always like that.
Fun Facts about this Episode: The Lemongrabs refer Princess Bubblegum as their mother, calling her "Mother Princess." The lemon castle looks different than it did in "You Made Me" and the trees outside have a different color. In "You Made Me" they were pink, but now they are green. After Princess Bubblegum read the Lemongrabs' letter, she exclaims "bullgunk" which is a censored version of the vulgar word "bullsh*t." Episode connections: The flashback shows Princess Bubblegum creating Lemongrab 2 from "You Made Me." Cultural references: The way that Lemongrab and Lemongrab 2 speak (completing the sentence of each other) and walk (in a symmetrical way), is a well known trait of twins, such as Si and Am from Disney's Lady and the Tramp and I and Am, bounty hunters from the series Samurai Jack. The way that Lemonjon's heart starts to pump and enlarge is similar to how the Grinch's heart in the How the Grinch Stole Christmas does. The bow Jake wears at the beginning of the episode resembles the one Isabella wears in Phineas and Ferb. Princess Bubblegum, Finn, and Jake salute in a similar manner to that of the United States military. The Lemon Head who screams as his skin rips off is a reference to the 1982 snow and alien terror film "The Thing". When Peter Maloney's character, "George Bennings", becomes possessed by the Thing and begins to turn into the titular monster, he screams and turns his head in a very similar way. Lemonjon could be a reference to John Lennon; in one episode of the Simpsons called "The Bart of War" Bart and Milhouse go to Flander's house and find sodas based on the names of The Beatles and drink one called "John Lemon." The title card is a reference to a scene in the Simpsons episode "Bart Vs Thanksgiving". Errors: The TV-PG rating originally faded in while Lemonjon was having a conversation with Finn and Jake. However, for later airings, TV-PG was re-located back to the Adventure Time Opening Sequence. When the Lemongrabs are giving a speech to the Lemon people, Lemongrab 2 seems to be missing his ribcage linings on his chest. Jake leaves the bow he was wearing and the glass he was holding on the tablecloth, but when Cinnamon Bun is saying bye to him they are gone. When Princess Bubblegum is going to package the last candy seed, they are seen in a different order than they were when Finn and Jake came in. Also, when Finn and Jake show the Lemongrabs the seeds they are in the same order Princess Bubblegum packaged them, but when Lemongrab goes to grab them they are in a different order. When Lemonjon carries the castle toward the Candy Kingdom he passes through the Candy Forest, despite the fact that the Candy Forest is located near the Candy Kingdom, which is still far away. When the Lemongrabs are giving their speech Lemonjon seems to be in a different room than the one Finn and Jake first found him. When Lemonjon stands up the castle looks different than it did when Finn and Jake were arriving. Before Lemonjon stands up, it can be seen that the two stumps outside the castle where the lemon guards were sitting on are gone. The road to the lemon castle looks different than it did in "You Made Me." Among the many words written on Lemongrab's brain are misspelled ones such as "posessed" and "asperagus."
The broken logic: "We need more candy so we can give it life so we can get more candy so we can eat." feels like an allegory for addiction.

we have reached the point where i stopped watching advenure time as a kid and i am SO EXCITED
IT'S ADVENTURE TIME TIME
Man, you’re in for a lemon treat every time the Grabs have an episode
2:40 That's so true... :,-(
So good to have adventure time everyday
Oh by God's beard, why did I watch this? Why on Earth did I watch this again? Why relive the terror of the Lemonculi of Lemon Castle? What drove me to watch this and relive this FUCKING episode!?! WHY DID I WANT TO SEE THE HORRID PROMETHEANS BORN OF LEMONGRABS' HANDIWORK!?!
Oh yeah, Nux commentary.
Two in a row? I don't know what I did to deserve such glory, but I shall endeavor to keep at it.
He did like 5 at once on his twitch channel
For so long I've waited... And now I wish I waited a little longer... this one hurts... it hurts real bad.
I am a product of neglect and despair from an emotionally absent mother and nonexistent father... to see stuff like this depicted at all, let alone fron a show I once watched myself, so lovingly and unknowing... man.
Just... fuck.
I'm tired boss...
But it is pretty funny that I can deeply relate to crazy ass characters like Lemongrab and Tim Burton's Willy Wonka lmao
literally what is a family hahaha... ha...
does the nightmare never end...?
I would argue that PB does not have god complex but rather that she IS a god that created the candy people in her image.
I've been waiting for this juicy lemon of an episode. . . can't wait for North Korea lemoncarbs...
By the way, this episode was banned in some countries😮
Can you do a lore dive on Don't Starve?
Around 50(ish) more episodes until she arrives!!!
Yo nux, IDK if your still doing lore dives buuuut ima just do this for it's great characters and animations, day 1 of asking nux to react to all ZZZ story cutscenes.
The next Lemon episode gave me nightmares as a kid
Lemongrab is 100% the most complex and philosophically designed charatcer in modern media.
Lemon John appears in a Lemon Castle... Pillar John appears in Pizza Tower... Coincidence???
21:40 its what he would've wanted
wow lemongrabs truly is the bondrewd of this world
It's not a kingdom. It's either a dukedom or duchy
Boss ain't ready for Lemonhope...
Bro. Your not ready for the marcy scene
Damn, I'm 15 seconds late.
If it is Selfish to create life, is selfishness genuinely wrong?
Not in itself. I mean survival of any kinda requires selfishness. Though I think Nux is using the negative connotation to make non-negative actions seem negative because he wants pb to be the big villain
I don't think it is always selfish to have a kid. It would be selfish for me because I physically can't care for one (physically disabled). But if someone wants kids because they truly love life and want to share that with a child that isn't selfish at all. They are sacrificing their own life, time, energy, money, etc so someone else can love life too.
One of the best episodes
Ah yes, the lempreg goon dungeon episode
awww yea made in abyss, maybe one of my favorite scars.
4:44 fear and hunger ahh location
Nature AND Nurture. They are like that because they were made like that. Any immoral behavior was then never corrected. As shown here, she could have changed the way they think, and thus, the way they act.
But she couldn't. She did try to change them. It didn't work though. And erasing their brain doesn't change their behavior. They were always like that.
Fun Facts about this Episode:
The Lemongrabs refer Princess Bubblegum as their mother, calling her "Mother Princess."
The lemon castle looks different than it did in "You Made Me" and the trees outside have a different color. In "You Made Me" they were pink, but now they are green.
After Princess Bubblegum read the Lemongrabs' letter, she exclaims "bullgunk" which is a censored version of the vulgar word "bullsh*t."
Episode connections:
The flashback shows Princess Bubblegum creating Lemongrab 2 from "You Made Me."
Cultural references:
The way that Lemongrab and Lemongrab 2 speak (completing the sentence of each other) and walk (in a symmetrical way), is a well known trait of twins, such as Si and Am from Disney's Lady and the Tramp and I and Am, bounty hunters from the series Samurai Jack.
Lemonjon could be a reference to John Lennon; in one episode of the Simpsons called "The Bart of War" Bart and Milhouse go to Flander's house and find sodas based on the names of The Beatles and drink one called "John Lemon."
The title card is a reference to a scene in the Simpsons episode "Bart Vs Thanksgiving".
Errors:
The TV-PG rating originally faded in while Lemonjon was having a conversation with Finn and Jake.
The road to the lemon castle looks different than it did in "You Made Me."
Among the many words written on Lemongrab's brain are misspelled ones such as "posessed" and "asperagus."
That comment in the 14:00 minute mark about creating life, can't it be both?
