John Daly was one of the few people in the 1950s who worked on all three networks at the same time. In 1955, he was the host of "What's My Line?" on CBS, the head of the news department and nightly anchor on ABC's evening news program, and the host of "Who Said That?" on NBC, and he made frequent appearances in other roles on NBC and CBS.
I love the Marx brothers but Harpo is my favorite. He was wonderful. God bless the Marx brothers. They may be gone but they are not forgotten. Especially by me. Harpo was a very amazing man and father
Towards the end of his tenure on "TODAY" (he left in June 1961), Dave Garroway often went on "vacation", and others filled in for him....including John.
Harpo appeared at a theatre in Glasgow, Scotland to a very appreciative audience. A Glasgow audience is the hardest in the world to play to. At the end of the first week Harpo came out to thank the audience for their overwhelming reception. Only thing is Harpo doesn't talk, he broke character. The audience went crazy, and Harpo who was to play another week didn't. They had to close the theatre to make repairs to the damage the audience had made.
By 1961 Harpo was a pretty sick man. He supposedly suffered from constant angina although you could never tell it from the looks of things here. He died in 1964 while undergoing the then new procedure called "Coronary Bypass " surgery in the hopes of relieving his angina pains.
I've never seen this clip before! It's wonderful. I really thought I remembered seeing him on WML but I must be thinking of an appearance on some other show.
Harpo did a brief guest shot on YBYL around this time, possibly that's what you're thinking of? Groucho, of course, was on WML a bunch of times, never more memorably than in his first appearance (on the panel) in 1959: ua-cam.com/video/p6wxrLjJobM/v-deo.html Chico was a mystery guest in 1951, but that's a lost episode, infuriatingly enough! Always nice to see comments from you, R.D. Dragon!
Always nice to see a new video on the channel! After looking around a bit, I think I was remembering his appearance on I've Got a Secret (also promoting his autobiography).
R.D. Dragon Lol It’s obviously a crazy experience because one time, Chico disguised himself as Harpo because they’re almost identical for a scary reason.
Not then. This was the era of J. Fred Muggs and (after 1957) Kokomo, Jr. Chimpanzees who co-hosted from time to time. John Daly, though, could make anything _look_ classy.
May 3, 1961 was supposed to be the day for Alan Shepard to make the first ever flight into space on Freedom 7. I believe it was scrubbed after a few hours of waiting in the early morning due to bad weather (back then, there had to be pristine conditions to monitor a launch to watch the rocket in case of problems). This segment of TODAY aired in the 8-9am Eastern Daylight Saving Time period.
I can't help but notice that in different parts of this (It could be the fact he is being interviewed) it almost looks like Harpo struggles to stay in character and not speak!
I recall seeing a shorter version of this clip, but with the very beginning intact, before Harpo started with the teeth. I will have to dig through my molasses-filled brain to try and recall where and when I saw it. I'll let you know if I dig it up.
Maybe in "The Unknown Marx Brothers" doc? That's the only other place I can think of offhand where this segment might have shown up. I haven't watched that in many years (excellent doc!)
I thought maybe in the episode of Late Night with Letterman when Bill Marx re-released "Harpo Speaks". No dice. So I know one place where it isn't. I guess that's a start. :D
It's also not in "Inside The Marx Brothers". At this rate, I'll nail down everywhere it isn't before sunrise. I think I'll just watch "The Unknown Marx Bros." at normal speed and not focus on this for now. My brain hurts from watching 2 hours of TV in the last hour.
I remember in elementary school that went I was sent to the principal, some teachers mailbox had a set of chattering teeth that she confiscated from a kid.
In late 1960, John Daly abruptly resigned from ABC News, saying it was over a decision the network made to delay the start of their election night coverage. But I've read that he knew ABC was looking to replace him. Daly still had WML which paid well for what little time it took. He also took "free lace" jobs (we'd call them "gigs" today) such as substituting for Dave Garroway on Today. He was hoping to get the job permanently when Garroway left the show in 1962 but NBC went with Hugh Downs instead.
"Harpo Speaks" is not difficult to get a copy of. I don't think it's ever been out of print since it was originally published. smile.amazon.com/Harpo-Speaks-Marx/dp/0879100362/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=harpo+speaks&qid=1554899841&s=gateway&sr=8-1
To the four people (so far) who have downvoted this video: You have no soul. I ordinarily pay no attention to downvotes, which are par for the course for any video with more than a few hundred views on UA-cam, but on **this** video? This quickly? SMH.
OK, I'll try to compensate for their poor taste by issuing one of my exceedingly rare upthumbs. Though what Harpo might do with the term "upthumb" is, um, better left unconsidered. :-)
What's My Line? Don't let that get to you. So many young people are very disconnected with the humor we understood in simpler times. I was never a big fan of the Marx Brothers, even as fighting with the autocorrect on my mobile device so often plays out like one of their acts. (Coincidence, I'm sure, despite my advanced age, or maybe revenge.) Although I find it refreshing to see even people whom I admittedly never admired, featured again as though I've been transported back in time to re-experience it ... I can't blame younger people for not "getting it." That's for "downvotes". Now, if they were to make nasty comments, that would be another thing. I thank you for your efforts, which seem Herculean to me. Your every post is a promise of a leisurely stroll through my more cherished memories.
Thank you for that truly lovely-- and greatly appreciated-- comment, CM Rosary. I'm sorry I hadn't a chance to acknowledge it sooner, but it's more or less random chance that I finally saw it today. I don't receive any notification from UA-cam for about 90% of the comments left on my videos these days-- it's been this way for months. But regardless of the reason for my tardy reply, I couldn't possibly not thank you for your comment now that I've finally seen it. You made my night. Even though you're not a Marx Bros fan! :)
The dentures that wouldn't move were Harpo's. The others were the other Marx Brothers. If that's the cleaned up version, what does the dirty version look like?
This hilarious humor was once acceptable, years later, if you performed half of these gags in public, you would probably get arrested for public indecency
Daly had that same relaxed approach to guests that Dick Cavett did. We are much poorer, now that this kind of television entertainment has disappeared.
To bad Harpo was never a guest on What's My Line?. He could have fooled the blindfolded panel in more than one way, but the audience would have to be prepped beforehand not to gasp. Could have just used his normal voice or use other props to answer as he couldn't "speak".
Best stunt he could actually do there is appear as himself, not in character. No wig, no hat, just his regular self and answer questions with his regular voice. He's the only guest who wouldn't need to mask his voice unless the panel had ever spoken to him.
Harpo's on screen character didn't respect women in the films..his sight gags were better suited to Stan Laurel and to "The Three Stooges"..I respect his talents as a musician and as a painter of beautiful portraits and still lifes..but..he was not funny.
I loved John Daly. He was great on What’s My Line.
I only discovered John Daly this year and have become a huge admirer of his. Like his colleague Dorothy Kilgallen his versatility was amazing
And remember, this was live. No cuts, no retakes.
Just finished "Harpo Speaks". Great book about a great man
" " .........Harpo AGREES!
Gummo was their agent. And, Zeppo, too, I believe.
I read it when it came out, a fascinating account of an interesting life, the bad & the good. I liked the stuff about the cut-throat croquet matches !
Micahel - to this day I want to know what was in those papers Harpo "smuggled" out of Russia.
@@richmotroni I do as well. I read his autobiography "Harpo Speaks" but I don't remember him mentioning it.
Harpo was really a gentle soul and God love him for all the laughs he gave the world and even today we still laugh at his humor
Why. Would someone not like Harpo ? A true comic
Lee Mclaury no idea
Harpo can't talk
@george george Nope I'm right he's shy
@george george That was a bit of an overreaction.

Daly was always a good sport but I never dreamed I would see him laugh so hard.

Thank you so, so much for all the work you put into cleaning this up and making it available.
Sad to note that 6 months later Chico would pass away and three years later so would Harpo 😢
Legendary family.
......And in 1977, Julius Henry 'Groucho' Marx joined Chico and Harpo in heaven.
He doesn’t look like he’s in his seventies here. That’s for sure.
😢 Harpo was a little cupcake

Thanks for being such a kill joy.
He's like some angelical sprite, spreading laughter and smiles.

He is why I started playing Harp.
If you haven't already, watch some interviews here on UA-cam with Harpo's wife and his eldest son. What great people and a really happy family.
John Charles Daly was everywhere in those days! What's My Line? weekly on CBS ... Director of News for ABC ... and here he is on NBC's Today Show.
Thanks for posting this. Harpo was the one Marx brother I liked, and watching Mr. Daly in helpless hysterics made my day. 😊
The more older he gets, the more cuddlier he looks
Edit: Help! I’m dying of Harpo’s cuteness.
Never knew before today that John Daly hosted TODAY!!
Towards the end of his tenure on "TODAY" (he left in June 1961), Dave Garroway often went on "vacation", and others filled in for him....including John.
Daly's laugh is priceless.
Nothing bigger than his laugh was his ego

A great moment in television!
I love Harpo and I think John Daly is simply marvelous as well. I loved him as host of What's My Line.
I feel blessed to have been born at a time you were able to enjoy these wonderfully talented people...Thank you for these awesome posts!
Nice to uncover this ! Terrific
John Daly was in stitches! Rest in peace, John.

harpo getting away with a vaudeville routine into the 1960's.

He’s too cute to stay in character
Groucho's son Arthur, once said the only time he ever saw his father cry was at Harpo's funeral.
Harpo rules!
6:02 you can see harpo’s hair
Chico would be gone 5 shorts months after this appearance by Harpo
Once upon a time, silly humor was acceptable. But a lot of today's humor relies on putting someone down.
idk what it is, but John is so attractive to me
I feel the same and am a little baffled by it. I think it’s because he has so much fun, and he’s so sweet to his guests.

In late 1960, John Daly abruptly resigned from ABC News, saying it was over a decision the network made to delay the start of their election night coverage. Groucho kept talking for a laugh. Harpo played the Harp very well and pantomime. We as kids didn't get his skirt chasing bit.
