  • Both lifeboats launched to a 'Mayday' from a 35' trimaran with 2 POB suffering engine failure close to the outer breakwater to Portland harbour.
Portland harbour tug & a passing vessel 'Sound Surveyor' also responded.
By this time the yacht was on the rocks. Sound Surveyor managed to get a line on the yacht and tow it from the breakwater as the ALB arrived.
Sound Survey continued to tow the vessel clear as the ILB landed two lifeboat crew on to the yacht to assess the situation and rig a towing bridle.
After this assessment it was decided to evacuate the yachts crew to the ALB due to the unsafe mast, missing port, breached starboard hulls & water ingress in the main hull.
Once the bridle had been rigged a towline was passed from the ALB.
The tow from the Sound Surveyor was released and the ALB took over.
Due to the situation the Lifeboat crew where then taken off by the ILB before the course was altered.
As the ALB altered course, the yacht capsized to starboard and completely inverted.
With the likelihood of a prolonged tow, it was decided the ILB would take the yachts crew ashore to awaiting Coastguards and Ambulance.
Unfortunately after a long struggle the Lifeboat was unable to save the vessel & it sank.
