Saw her live in concert a few years ago. Did about 2 hrs...no scripts. Didn't falter once. Brilliant! A proper entertainer.
When I was 9 years old, my mum bought me a poetry book. Pam Ayres was the writer of these poems of life and strife. I swear Pam's poems helped me to see the 'other' side of people and life there and then. Now, I am a teacher helping pupils see the gifts that the 'economy of words' in poetry can offer. Pam Ayres, thank you for bringing my life to rights for me as a that latch key kid. You made the world humorous, fun and made me think more about the written word!
This is how my dinner party ideas go, too. So glad it isn't just me.

Why did they never make Pam the Poet Laureate, you know, someone who speaks our language and who knows about real life? She has been wonderful live and terrific on the radio but sadly underused on tv. Bless her, she should be a Dame.

@@elysianfibres1642 Pam Ayres is more popular and better-known than most poets. Just because she appeals to ordinary people is no reason to try to devalue her work. Nobody likes a snob.
@@stephenguppy7882 Sorry I should have been clearer in my comment. In a 2018 interview with the Radio Times, Pam Ayres said, "I'm not a poet - I just write comedy that happens to rhyme". I wanted to point out that there is a distinction between a Poet Laureate and someone with a unique talent in comedic/musical performance like Pam Ayres.

It’s been years yet I still remember her stories of her youth. The allotments where the men laid wire traps for the poor moles and then left them to die in the sunlight. That story still haunts me. Pam is a wonderful storyteller.
