If you are a valet parker and want all the profits, go start your own company.
You will then have to work twice as hard and risk all your money before you realise it was much easier just working for someone else.

All this should be perfectly obvious to any child of _10_ who grew up watching his/her parent build a business -- watching what that parent has to go through and sacrifice, and then what the family has to sacrifice by extension. The only people who think socialism is a good idea are those who are inexperienced and utterly lacking in what it takes to start or run a business themselves. Which is why socialism _always_ goes so disastrously wrong. I cannot believe this is even up for discussion in 2019.

Just like most college graduates would not pass a sixth graders test back in the late 1600's. just look up the schools curriculum from that period. actually most people with doctorates could not pass those test!
I'm 60 and never heard this in my school . We did have black and white couples come in and try to spread the word of peace and unity . We were also allowed to bring guns to school and put them in our locker so we could hunt on the way home . Guess how many kids got shot ? The answer is 0 .
Common knowledge in my school was that Capitalism and Socialism both are terrible systems and humans are appearantly stuck in the old ways to figure out how to move forward without using the third world and poor people to squeeze the ressources needed to sustain the bloated capitalistic system in the west.

True, Janice....but that was before Bush entered America into the globalist elites New World Order. While the left and Democrats are advancing it, the Bush types and establishment Republicans are not exactly fighting or opposing the leftist slide towards global socialism. At best, they are conspiring with the left to ensure that crony capitalism remains. That is why many of the wealthiest American entrepreneurs and business owners (Zuckerberg with Facebook, Google and Silicon Valley executives, etc.) are embracing rather than rejecting it. Dont get me wrong, Republicans are much, MUCH better than Democrats...and there is a chance that Republican constituents can elect the right people (conservatives) to their party and save the party and America at the same time, but voters need to be more involved during the primaries and vote the RINOS out and replace them with conservative, Constitutionally principled candidates.
I find it deeply disturbing that he has to explain this to college students like they are middle schoolers…
It's an argument tailored to fools minds though. I'm no leftist, but many of his examples don't exactly hold up, in the sense that there could be better arguments. The great business he is talking about doesn't exist in a vacuum. I'm going to assume he is talking about net income, because gross income would be a useless statistic, that means the business is so profitable that it would be expanding, and therefore its net income would actually be reduced to a reasonable margin for the risk.
They are dealing with other competitors who want to offer better value, and valet prices are no different. The example he gives, from an economic standpoint, screams nothing about labor and everything about business mismanagement. I'm sorry, but as a conservativish guy I have to say this screams political figure talking about something he isn't too good at. I can't think of any example of a valet working outside of a worker pool, and worker pool means worker union.
Not only are labor cooperatives strong, but even major conservative economists like Friedman and Sowell advise against getting rid of unions, the major problem being political involvement in the process. The fact that his examples lack ideals of a proper union system when trying to argue against basically union extremists, I'd have to say he's failing to convince anyone serious.
His argument to what we can presume is the future pool of low end workers is basically fuck you, you work for me, do your job or go home. While that is precisely the attitude of any employer, its actually because those employers aren't in fact able to make major profit margins off of labor pools. Unless of course you count tips for alcohol service, however that's exclusively American. Companies that aren't very profitable, however, are begging people of quality to work them, and taking anyone with a single arm and potential. That's basically the service industry 101, including fast food.
The reality of labor economics is far too complicated for most to understand, myself included, but I'm pretty confident he's not playing the right angle here. The debate with communists in this sense is about the proper role of unions, but instead he makes hyperbolic similes defending old school non-union "lasses faire" as if banning unions would somehow be lasses faire.

@@davidjohnson8655 Dinesh didn't even touch on some of the other costs like the valet's desk and consumables (microscopic cost but not borne by the valet), uniforms, name tags, benefits other than cash, cost of the facility including the portico cochere, driveways, parking garage and the real reason people are there, the hotel and its facilities. All of those costs must be paid by the parking fees. So, who's the fool?

@@David-hm9ic So that's certainly not true, much of that can be paid through the business, and it still doesnt mean anything in relation to my point, which is that there is a standard already set, his idea that it's fair to take a 2000% profit is just a terrible example, and he will be defended eternally by people who just want to repeat his lines, not actually learn something.
I partnered up with a friend and we started a construction crew. We worked right along side or employees, we provided many of the tools, nails and compressor fuel and such. We bidded on jobs, answered to general contractors, inspectors, homeowners and what not, which was fine. The real punch in the mouth is when all of our profits went to payroll on payday and we walked away with empty pockets. That happened a couple times. It is absolutely true that the employer takes on much more responsibility, headache, and risk.
Same here with a construction company. I remember when I wrote my first check to workers comp. It just about buried me.
Anyone with more then 3 working brain cells understands this, as it's very, very obvious.
Credit to the educational system for keeping the students so dumbed down that they do not even understand basic economics.

We had a restaurant that failed due to external factors (roadworks taking years right on our doorstep). This was years ago and we are still busy paying off the debt from that business. The staff just went and found new jobs. That is why the owner gets the money when things go right, because the staff don't have to deal with it when things go wrong.
often times owners use investors and when it doesnt pan they take their profits and leave like the employee did too

@@devinbreckmann8956 its the same concept. The investors provide the capital for a share of the profits on an idea they believe will be successful. If its not, they lose the money (risk). The people they invested in are likely to lose whatever they invested too, or at least not profit. If they just took investor money and ran, thats fraud, not capitalism.
Also, liquidators usually seize their assets and distribute the value amongst people they owe money to... once they pay themselves. I hate liquidators.
Or they run the whole thing through an LLC and pass the risk to subcontractors who get stiffed when the owner bankrupts the company.

My mother-in-law is a registered republican, and as far as I know, has always voted red. I have always for the most part voted blue, occasionally red for senate/house/local government, but presidential has always been blue. When it was Trump vs Hillary, I refused to vote, because I could not stand either of them. This year, I will grudgingly vote for Trump, because Biden is just that much worse. I dislike Trump on a personal level, he is truly someone I could never be friends with, but our president isn't supposed to be our pal, he is supposed to run this country with the powers afforded him by his office. And aside from all the BS that covid has caused which is beyond his control (the liberal media would have you believe otherwise), he has done a half decent job of it.
But my mother-in-law (and I love her like my own mother lol)...she has fallen for the liberal media BS and watches CNN and MSNBC religiously and thinks all the vomit they spew is pure unbiased truth. She hates Trump both personally and politically, and believes the lies and twisted truths that they spill to millions of viewers daily. It's so hard to persuade people that businesses barely leave margin. During the rough patches, my father was losing money EVERY day while his employees were profiting on their labor. It took him over ten years to pay off his debt and start profiting. Revenue is not profit and I've worked in huge companies that were losing money for years on end while still paying all salaries on time and in full.
I think of it as, a $100,000 salary equates to the investment income of around $2,000,000. If I had $2.5m I would have an annual dividend salary of $100k.
It is an incredible power we have in a capitalist system where our simple labor is worth so much that we can have the purchasing power of million dollar portfolios.
@@sloth6765 That's a pretty interesting way to look at it, and it's very true. Which is why the really big companies are actually creating a lot of jobs, and the people who make the big company salaries in turn return a lot of that money back to the system by being consumers.

People who only want what they need, never start a business. People who have something more than the basic needs, like some goals and desires, are the ones that create businesses or that work harder than most to gain more.
For some, it's the desire of being retired by 40-50 and live the last 30 years of their life while doing only what they really enjoy, EX: Traveling, writing, staying with the family, working on personal projects and other skills, like horsemanship, wood working etc..
Just as well as those that have big dreams; saving people, building amazing structures, or whatever. And those could be due to other reasons.
Essentially, it's not about the basic needs.
Success in business is like a pregnancy: No one knows how many times you were screwed before the success. They only see the result of success.

He doesn't understand Marx at all. He's misconstruing what Marx is saying. Surplus value is simply what the capitalist generates after the worker spends his or her working day generating the value of his or her wages and from that is profit. A business cannot run without labor no matter how much machines or fancy ideas a capitalist has the business cannot run unless they have workers who they can extract surplus value from and that surplus value is where profit comes from. In no argument did Marx ever say the worker should take all of the surplus value, That's not possible under capitalism thus why he spent time talking about the contradictions of labor and capital and how it would eventually cause revolution. Dinesh D'Souza really hasn't understood Marxist arguments.

Work harder, make more money, then give that money to a school who will again teach you only as much as they want you to know, because they also need you and your money to continue existing.

As a dentist, it amuses me when assistants think they should get paid a similar wage as me since according to them, they do “all the work.” I’ll be the first to admit they have a physically more demanding job and I truly appreciate that. But peoples greed and lack of common sense foster an entitlement mentality.
It’s their arrogance and entitlement that’s laughable. They have no risk, nor money in the game. They didn’t get the education, invest in the business, nor grow the patient base. If something goes wrong, or the business fails, employees just leave. If it’s so easy, and they’re so important, they should open their own practice, and pay floor sweepers an equal share of their hard earned investment.
As an entrepreneur I have had employees who want an equal share of the profits. You know what they ended up getting... fired because they decided they didn't need to work anymore.
I had one who asked for a cut of the profit ONTOP of their wage...
And the capitalist paid for the land for the parking lot or structure and paid to construct them, and continues to pay property taxes on them. Minor point, but valid. That cost of doing business is deducted before net profit is determined.
The capitalist also pays big bucks to a manager (to handle the whiny employees). ;-)
Only a person who has signed the front of a paycheck understands the big picture.
Don't forget electricity, insurance, security, inspections, and needs a better return than they could get elsewhere or they would never make the initial investment.

Wrong actually. The valet has invested time. That's where it ends though. Time. Their time gets exchanged for currency (a paycheque). A straight up exchange of time for money.
The owner had to first come up with the idea...then the financing for his idea...then the permits and regulations for that idea...then the additional insurances as required by law...then the OpEx (all the material used by the idea)...then the bills to pay when the idea is realized...then the payroll...and if they have a bad day, sucks to be them. If the valet has a bad day they still get paid money for time. That never changes.
If this was just the owner and the valet, then an argument *might* be made for a bigger share of the profits since really only one of two is doing any actual work...but when you are one employee of hundreds or more, you have no leg to stand on. If you want more money for the time you spend, then better yourself and get a different role that compensates you more for the time.
The left simply doesn't understand this most basic principle.

How do they handle the cars? What extra tasks to they do to improve the job? How much experience have they accumulated? How long have they worked for the company?
Then there are other issues that should be addressed, by the not only the employee, and business owner, but the community of the city, and the politicians. What is the the cost of living in the city? How accessible is education, and health care? Access to education makes a better employee, and citizen. Access to health care makes a better employee, and citizen. What transportation is available for the citizenry? If the cost of living comes out to 40 bucks an our, why are we paying 15? However we should also ask, WHY is the cost of living 40 bucks an hour?

As for socialism (that is also different from Marxism) i can show you how it will logically work by pointing out Mondragon in Spain and Coop in Italy.
I remember having a similar conversation with some fellow employees back in the mid 1990's. They were complaining they weren't paid enough and that the owner should give more. I explained to them that they get to come in and work 9-5 (in which "work" was what they did only half the time), they would take 2 hour lunches, and numerous smoke breaks. I explained they didn't have to go find the work. That was the owner finding the work for us. When the client complained it wasn't to them but the owner. When the work was coming to an end (contract) it was the owner busting his butt to find more asap to keep everyone employed lest they lose them to another studio. The cushy desk they sat at, the studio they worked in, all paid by the owner. And of course if things went south, they would just go to another studio, whereas the lawyer would have to pay back all the loans out of pocket. No stress for them. It all went on the owner.
Did they agree? Nope. Just mumbled and turned to each other with the same whining so they could feel supported in their selfishness.

It is very hard to control your labour and get them to do any work properly for 8 hours unless it's work under a roof, by which I mean in a factory or building. And if you fire them, then they start crying about wives and children and needs and in US it might even turn into a protest nowadays. If you're a local businessman that's a huge problem.
This is a 100% true story. I have worked for a struggling busines where they did not have enough to make payroll at the end of the week. Perhaps more than one as some were more private about things than others. When that happened, and it did more than once, someone had to make an additional investment in an awful hurry before the banks closed on Friday and then no pay checks would go out. I did NOT want to be the owner. I did not envy the owners. To their credit, no one had to go without a paycheck when that happened. Their bank accounts shrunk but we got paid. The owners EARNED every penny they got when things got better. And I, for one, was glad for that and for them.
Yes, they did borrow from bank(s). But they had to repay those loans. It is called capitalism and it is, so far, the best system that we have invented.
Your last sentence is the key. We've tried communism as an alternative, it doesn't work.
We don't have a perfect way of distributing wealth, and we never will, but we know that what we have now is WAY better than having everything controlled by the state.

I am not an economics or business person but I knew this innately. It is common sense. The fact that there are people who need to be taught this is deeply disturbing.

This is correct. I worked for an arms importer for awhile. I started in one of his retail stores as a salesman. It turns out I am really good at selling guns, I sold more guns than anybody he had before, during or after my tenure there. But what good would my talent do me if I had no place to use it? He spent his life building the business, risking, sacrificing, taking loans that needed to be paid off, hiring, firing, training, dealing with myriad government agencies, insurance, catalogs, flyers, manufacturers, other importers, foreign officials and red tape overseas....the list is almost endless. I came in, opened up the shop, sold guns and went home. Should I get the profits? No, I should get exactly what he and I agreed upon and I got that and more. After I moved on to another job he let me still have shifts on the weekend to make extra money. When we employees work at a job, we (typically) wake up, go to work at lets say 8 am, work until 5pm and then go home and dont have to worry about anything. The boss on the other hand usually have to work all day and can't just leave at 5 if something urgent came up. They have so much responsibility. What lefties dont get is that responsibility is one of the main factors to your pay, not how hard your job is physically.
James-you have a knack for selling guns, why not cough up the $ for an FFL and go into business for yourself? It may take a year of little income, but it will pay you many times over in the long run. The sense of self-reliance is very satisfying. It took me 10 years to grow my printing company from $0 sales on Day 1 to a $million/year in sales, with many sleepless nights, but would not trade the life I led for anything.

My father was a lawyer. He opted for a secure job rather than start his own practice. He made far less than those who started successful law firms ( and I suppose far more than those who started unsuccessful firms). He never complained about the trade off he made.

That is one of the great things about capitalism and is what inspires others to actually go out and do better. If I see you making more money than me while running the same type of business I will do everything I can to find out just how you are doing that and try to improve my own business the same way.
The problem is entitlement, kids spend 25% of their life having their parents give them everything while not actually learning how to do it themselves. If my kids want money then they will have to earn it by performing work around the house and in the yard. Even telling them that they have to work for their food and clothes will go a long way even though they will be getting it regardless, it will instill responsibility and a work ethic into them and remove that sense of entitlement.

Another point that people miss, that pisses me off to no end - That $15/hr job that you have? Nobody forced you to accept it! First, you're missing the point that without employers, there wouldn't be employees - or wages. Jobs don't exist for the taking, in nature, and must be created by someone. Taxes paid by employees are in truth paid by the employer, so that's your first point taken care of.

Forgot a couple things there. At just one of my plants alone, the electric bill is between $11,000 and $15, 000 a month. Let’s tack on the water, sewage, waste, argon, oxygen, Miller lease and service on welders and plasma cutters, overhead door repair, hoist lease and service, supplies provided to workers, hauler fees and licenses, insurance on the buildings, insurance on the haulers, insurance on the drivers, office equipment including paper, scanner repair and lease services, Dell computer lease and repair services, recycling fees, systems licenses, oh, outside there’s forklift lease and repair, materials purchase to build the product... property lease, property tax, required inspections, health care for workers.... And, workers salary. It blows peoples minds sometimes that 1billion dollar company could be in the red for two years straight, until you are the one signing the paychecks.

I have a small business and all I build are sheds and do finish out in them. To start with let’s say minimum $15,000 for a truck, $3,000 for a trailer, $2,000 for a cargo trailer for tools, on the low end $7,000 for tools, I have a $1,000,000 dollar insurance policy which cost $400 a month, a $250,000 bond that was $4,000 for the year, gas cost at $2 a gallon and I get 10 miles to gallon. If I hire a good framer it is minimum $20 an hour for him. So yeah I understand!! Yet they want someone like me that works hard just to get jobs and then to do the actual work to just give them part of my profit or all of it because they are to lazy to do what I did. I can understand why that makes perfect sense to them. All the rewards and none of the work!!!!

Let's begin with that I have read Marx and analyzed him:
1) His style of writing is a total disaster.
He had a lot of problems with constructing his point of view in order to make it clear for a reader. If you write something that pretends to reveal and disapprove some mainstream ideas, you must work on your writing skills.
2) He uses very simplified models and ignores everything else. As you may know, in his reasoning about economy he simply throws out the service sector, by calling it "non-productive" and because of that he thinks of it as a "non-sufficient" in his schemes. So, his world only consists of a capitalist who runs a large manufactory and of the labor, which is being exploited.
As we can observe nowadays, this is simply a total idiotism. The service sector is one of the important sectors which is responsible for redistribution of wealth.
I presume that when Marx was writing his books, the economy was a little bit different(one of the reasons why his ideas are totally irrelevant in the modern World), but I am not sure that the difference was SO sensible.
3) His ideas have nothing to do with facts
Not even one of his predictions has ever took place. If you have even one, please, share.
4) I would say that about 90% of his "ideas" were not fresh at all. He simply took something there, something here and adopted them.
The only thing that I hadn't heard about while was reading his books - the idea of exploitations according to surplus value.
5) His view on historical development of society is full of contradictions and questions, especially about the classes struggle as the main driver of development.

His philosophy is sophomoric. For one, he was so consumed with the dichotomies necessary for dialectical materialism, he consistently oversimplified the hell out of things to force them to fit into his philosophy. One obvious and simple example is his bourgeoisie vs the proletariat paradigm. There are plenty of other classes that are not accounted for in that paradigm, but without a dichotomy, Marx's dialectic materialism really didn't hold water. This was one of the criticisms Mises always gave of Marx's work, but there are dozens and dozens of other examples. It's a well known flaw.
Not to mention Marx's many failed predictions. For example, Marx predicted that capitalism would produce one tiny upper class and a gigantic lower class, when in reality, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT COMMUNISM PRODUCED!! Meanwhile, free market economies have produced by far the largest middle class in the history of the world. The reality is the opposite of Marx's prediction. Which is pretty much par for the course for Marx. Or did I miss the whole, "workers of the world unite" thing? Ya, that prediction didn't pan out too well either did it? In fact, numerous 20th century Marxist philosophers spent their careers trying to explain why that particular prediction didn't pan out. In fact, that's the very reason we're suffering under Marcuse's strategy of repressive tolerance right now.
Here's all you really need to know. Any ideology that effectively requires a total transformation of human nature to succeed, is probably destined to fail. You're NEVER going to have universality of opinion on this. I absolutely understand Marxism, and I'm NEVER going to cooperate with it voluntarily. And there are millions more just like me. If you don't have a guy pointing a gun at us, we're going to create goods and services that we then trade with each other in mutually beneficial voluntary exchanges. Which means just like every other time it's been implemented, your Marxism will need to be glued together with authoritarianism and intimidation. Haven't enough people died for this goddamn cult?

It’s funny. When a business is having a hard time, employees don’t line up and say they’re okay with less pay. They want what they’re promised either way - As they should.
But that also means the business owner is of course deserving of the majority of profit when they carry the risk, come up with the idea, organize the business, arrange contracts, administer pay, work schedules, buy tools and equipment, rent or buy the work place.
The worker is given a job, that was made possible by the owner. Want to manage all the revenue and profit? Start your own business and see how it works.

I have a buddy who worked for nothing trying to get a business started, and 6 months later after not making enough money to have the business viable, he had to accept failure, call bankruptcy and have that blemish on his record. 100% of the employees just went out and got another job, within a few weeks they were okay. None of them lingered around the failed business to help clean up the pieces or help with the financial ruin. He ended up losing his house, his marriage and it took him nearly 5 years to psychologically recover . Socialists wants a piece of the pie with a successful business, but nobody wants to accept the risk that it just might fail and the consequences that go with it.

As a CPA I did books for one of those mail box shipping centers. The business sold US postage stamps at a price higher than could be bought at a USPO. Many customers complained that they were paying more than they would at the post office. He asked me what to do. I advised him to post a sign that states "a sale without profit is merely a donation with risk". He never received any more complaints.

If you are referring to Zimbabwe, the British government agreed at the start of the country's independence to compensate white farmers who were growing cash crops for export rather than for local consumption, so that the land could be freed to grow staple foods. I was always trading something.
Even as a child, I had a limonade stand or sold my comic books, in front of my house.
One time, my brother & I built a Riksha & we drove the kids around the neighborhood for a little change.
Later on, I delivered newspapers & magazines, then I worked for the ice cream parlor across the street.
I was never NOT working.
My father instilled this work ethic in me.
I had 3 jobs while at university & started my own business afterwards.
But life was never easy... it's an up&down.
But hard work & learning, is always rewarding.
Perhaps if you held only one job while attending university you would have learned to spell 'lemonade' properly. #GOTEM!

If the valet isn't liable for wrecking a Lamborghini, then he isn't worth paying more. The owner of the service has to pay for all those damaged cars.
Wrecking someone else's car is a tort so the valet should be liable. According to employment law he maybe has claims against his employer, but if the employer has no money those claims are worthless.
In the age of limited liability companies the entrepreneur also takes no personal risk by running an enterprise.
I'm not a marxist or socialist, but this is also part of the truth.
I agree with you D'Souza. I grew up watching my parents built my family business from nothing. They had to sleep 4 hrs a day and work 16 hrs or so everyday. No vacation. No fancy cars. Nothing. This went on for years and years. We pay our employees 3x the minimum wage but they're still complaining. Our workers want all the profits, but they don't share the risks and losses.
I had a business for a year that employed 2 people who got paid every week, but after expenses there was no money for me, so I ended up with nothing for the entire time I ran the business. At the end of the year my 2 employees wanted me to keep the business going, but I couldn't afford to continue not making any money -- I had used up all my savings and couldn't afford to pay my rent or buy food, etc.
It's very disturbing that youngsters these days actually need to be explained these very basic concepts.
Very well said. When I took economics, they referred to this as the residual claimant. That is the business owner(s) who gets a cut after paying all costs to conduct business. That includes paying all laborers, insurance, taxes, utilities, etc. The business owner is the last in line to get paid, the residual claimant, and as he said, thus takes all the risks of the business.
The left has an extremely simple and often child like view of economics and simply does not understand these extremely simple concepts.
Rubbish! i studied economics too and the residual claim is the profit left at the end of settling all debts including the business owners' wages (Usually the largest amount). It is effectively an extra bonus/top-up for the business owner. Get your facts right please!

Most people who believe they deserve high pay for their low-skilled work have never left the shelter of their parents home, thus they have never known risk and will likely never understand it.
Why doesn’t the employee get all the money? Because when the burglar alarm goes off at three in the morning, he’s not the one getting woken up.
