      I was very skeptical about some of the things she pointed out! Can you share some interesting insights about a French home? Genuinely curious because I don't know if you felt this way but she came off kind of condescending when talking about French homes as if American homes were better but she didn't really point out anything great that we don't have in America. I don't know

    Americans live to work and are in a Catch 22 situation at the same time. They get the money but NOT the time to spend it on travel and family. So they buy more stuff like 8 TVs and have to pay for healthcare, etc. Do you watch the TVs all at the same time? Are they all on the same channel?

    Houses usually have a mailbox on the door, which is actually just a slot with a flap; the mail is deposited into your house basically. Therefore, the postman doesn't really pick things up as a normal common/service.
    To post a letter, you can put it in a mailbox which are all over, on the streets, built into walls in public areas or inside particular buildings like supermarkets (grocery stores) and so on. Then you have post offices where you can go and post a parcel and they are usually close enough to not be much hassle.
    In particular places and particular scenarios, or via couriers, you can arrange to have things picked up.

    Well in Sweden we don't need garbage disposal because we compost, even in the cities and considering how far along France are with their enviromental work, maybe they have it too.

    In the UK mail is delivered 6 days a week but if we want to send something we use a post box or the post office. If you are curious about US / UK comparisons from an American point of view the channels Magenta Otter Travels, Girl Gone London and Even Edinger have all done good ones on lots of different topics.

    • @Killermcknight
      @Killermcknight  Місяць тому

      When using a post office to send something, do you have to take it there yourself? For post boxes, are there boxes just all around town that you can drop the mail in and it’s picked up?

    • @beccatimps
      @beccatimps Місяць тому +2

      @@Killermcknight Yes we have to take it to the post office ourselves, and yes there are post boxes all over. They are checked for mail at least once a day (small village) and 4 or 5 times a day for a busier place.

      That’s good! So you have to go to the post office if you want to send mail, postal workers don’t pick it up for you? They’re not so common here, the closest one to us is a 15-20 minute drive. The next one from there is another 20-25 minutes away.

      @@Killermcknight no in every neighborhood there's a red pillar box (post box) you pop your letters in and the postman picks them up 3 times a day. There are 3 post boxes within a 5 minute walk of my house.

    Yes, as far as I know, houses in Europe are indeed smaller than in US. There might be several reasons to this:
    1/ I think it's linked to the fact that the taxes are calculated on the "living surface" of the house while in US it's on the whole land surface.
    2/ I think that it's also linked to the way of building houses. I found out that in US the average house is what would be considered as "cheap" building in Europe. In Europe walls, even inner walls are often in bricks (or stones for the older ones), nowadays isolation is very important, etc. so it's more expensive to have "big houses".
    3/ I also found out that people are more used to live together, share the same space ... and not everyone in his/her own room. That's maybe also why 1 big screen / 1 TV is enough.
    About garbage disposal in the sink: It's banned in Europe mainly for environmental concerns (water needs more cleaning before being sent back to nature) and recycling is more ecologic. For example, in my city, 95% of citizen waste are recycled ... and we are pretty proud of it. 🙂

      European houses are built alot stronger too. An american house would never be aproved here in norway atleast. Smallest thickness of walls of wood here are 10 inches. Thats minimum. Windows are 4 inches thick and 3 layers. Houses here last for 100 years easy. America houses are built like we build our sheds, so should be cheaper to build bigger.

    In Poland if you want to send something you have to go to post office. more and more people have AC at home cause it's getting hotter in summer from year to year. We also don't have mant tv's, usually one or two for a house. It's always shocking for me is how big houses are in US with big kichens and as many bathrooms as bedrooms! It's fascinating how different our countries are.

    Due to climate change, and climate regulations Europe is probably going to change regarding climate controlled homes.
    Most new (and even old) homes seem to be switching to heat pumps, a more climate friendly version of AC.

    Mailboxes? No. For what? You've heard about email, right? Do you still use fountain pens, paper, envelopes, stamps? And we haven't used checks for decades. Why would somebody send me to the bank? You do it and give me cash or, better yet, do an electronic transfer. WHY triturate the garbage? I don't have anything to triturate. Beats me. No ice for us. I'm a beer guy and don't put ice in my beer. We just bought a new fridge/freezer w/o ice maker. Two things go out right away, the ice cube tray and the tray for eggs.

    Mail - sending things we use mailboxes, which are locked and secure…unlike a flimsy little box at the end of your drive with a flag on it to tell thieves it’s a good idea to steal what you are sending out.
    Deliveries we have “letter boxes” which let things be delivered right into the home, again not leaving things that could be valuable out in a little box where it’s easy to steal.
    Remember - the mail service was effectively invented in the U.K. with the penny mail. We invented a way that was practical for our towns etc, and let you post parcels even as long as they fit through the mail box slot - which could be much bigger than could fit in those tiny little boxes you have. 😂

    Screens - we don’t have the same issue with as aggressive insects I don’t think. Historically we’ve had “net curtains” for both privacy and also keeping most insects out.
    Garbage disposal - never missed not having them. Don’t see the need. What’s wrong with using a bin? Weird imho.
    Sink - yeah, she’s showing off a modern newer sink. Newer homes and more recent refurbs will often have the similar kind of sinks.
    Ac - yeah, that’s going to change in Europe. Summers getting hotter and starting to get towards being necessary in some places. Much of America is just unfit for human habitation without spending a fortune - and the energy needed to do that is what’s now making the whole world hotter and need to figure out how to cope too!
