Crumbling sanctuary only cares about damage, so if you're using a strategy that revolves around life loss effects you can damage you opponents and they can't damage you!
It's also interesting in that it's a replacement effect that doesn't prevent damage, there's been a lot more "Damage can't be prevented" effects printed lately and this gets around that
I have Crumbling Sanctuary in an Umbrix mill deck as a defensive option that also pumps Umbrix and lets us mill the opponents by doing damage. One of my favorite weird old cards.
As to mention on Dauti Embrace, you could also use it on blockers. A opponent controls lets say three chunky creatures and you control a wide low powered creature board. Give all of that opponents creatures shadow and they can only block creatures with shadow this turn. Then let your whole board swing in for damage without losing a single creature.
Honestly, when I saw Cultural Exchange, the first thing I thought of was "any Blue deck that pumps out a bunch of crappy little creature tokens". Go ahead and have all my 1/1 humans, thrulls, myr, saprolings, servos, etc (which I might have anthems and other synergies for, but which you probably do not.) Meanwhile, I'll happily take your commander(s), and also your giant scary beaters, mana dorks, and combo pieces! Wait, that one has hexproof/shroud/protection from blue? Glad to hear it, because this spell doesn't actually target the CREATURES :)
Wait I'm confused, how does this spell not fizzle to hexproof? "Choose any number of creatures target player controls". While you are of course targeting the players, are you not also targeting the creatures? By choosing the creatures, you have to specify which creatures the spell will target. Thus, the spell is targeting the creatures that you choose, and thus would fizzle on any chosen creature with hexproof, would it not?
I built a deck around Crumbling Scantuary in a mono red control shell. I play cards like Browbeat, Book Burning, and Molten Influence to make my opponent make tough decisions. Theres also Black Vise and Lavaborn Muse for continuous damage. It's a janky theme but I'm able to ramp it out with Crystal Vein and find it quickly with Gamble, Winds of Change, and cycling Forgotten Cave. Many ways to build around it, and it makes interesting brews.
Dauthi Embrace is a lot of fun. "I'll give your creature shadow!" "Ok, I'll attack Mike!" "I'll give Mike's big blocker shadow! Wow, why would you make that attack, ya big dummy?"
Came looking to see if anyone had mentioned Pantz lol. He really is the king choice for this card. I also run it in my Sigarda, Font of Blessings deck tho.
Building custom Inscryption decks and Crumbling Sanctuary was already on the radar for Grimora, since her theme is undeath and her wincon is "delete everything." Now it's gonna be expensive!
I use Cultural Exchange in my Wilhelt, the Rot Cleaver deck. I had a great time exchanging a handful of 2/2 decaying zombies for my brother's entire board.
I have Crumbling Sanctuary in my mill deck. Your fairly save until the opponents decks become thinern, then they target you more. It saves me, and I still kind of millling them. But I played it in my mind with an pillowfort/lifegain deck too, where I want to keep a high life total, for cards like Felidar Sorvereign.
O no the words out on Crumbling Sanctuary! I have it in my Arcum deck and every time I pull it out in the dire scenarios I or the table needs it I always get this look of amazement that this card exists. I swear I am the only person who has ever played it, and while it isn't a save you against everything card as others pointed out about life drain. It is a really good crutch to stall to hopefully getting a win in a game you were otherwise guaranteed to lose.
5:10 WAY back in the day people would run that in decks with Gaea's Blessing, so basically you would set your opponents life total to their deck count and your life total to infinity. As bonus, you're milling through your opponents deck, with a non-zero chance of taking out their answers to your combo. That set up combos pretty well with Cyclone (10:15), too.
So the errata on Crown of the Ages does not have the 'controller' clause, implying you can put an opponent's aura onto one of your own creatures. And it gets around shroud and hexproof. Very cool card 👍
Dauthi Embrace fixes that problem with attack triggers and too many blockers. Anikthea is going to love that! Cryptoplasm seems like an auto-include for clones. Maybe because it’s old? 🤷🏻♂️ Cool finds all around! 🙌
I have Dauthi embrace in my Yuriko deck. It's brutal. I don't play that deck very often, unless I know I'm in a high powered pod where people play with high end cards where they have a high chance of winning by turn 4 or 5.
For crown of the ages you’re 9/10 times just better off blinking auras. If you’re not in white there’s the new Eldrazi confluence that blinks any non-land permanent. Up to 3 of them at instant speed for 4 mana.
@@brendans1983 you can do that either way if it’s blinked. And u can do 3 of them with Eldrazi confluence. When an aura enters the battlefield without being cast it has no target, but the thing it enchants still has to be legal. So u can “steal” 3 hypothetical auras. The real difference is that crown is repeatable.
Crumbling Sanctuary - Maybe use it in a Rune Tail deck with vigilant creatures for extra oppression. Either they block with their creatures and lose them, or risk losing good cards from their library? It's a bit of a stretch, but maybe....
I could see Confession Dial and Curfew in my Chun-Li deck, since I have to have her attacking all the time, this would be a good way to pseudo protect her. I should add Crumbling Sanctuary in my Umbris deck. I don't care how the cards go into exile, as long as they get there.
Wooooow Demo, thank you! Now I gotta put my hands on some Cryptoplasms, I didn't know that card! It will happily become a flying zombie in my Geralf, Visionary Stitcher deck! 🧟♂️
Maybe for that Cyclone card, combine with Descent into Avernus in a Gruul enchantress Just burn the whole board for a ton each rotation and be able to afford to pay for it using the treasures from Descent.
I actually just made a “group hug” Kardur deck and put dauthi embrace in it. Goal is to kill people with their own resources of course, so thats how the howling mine and whatnot are breaking parity. Its basically combat trick tribal and dauthi embrace is lovely
Hey man, I took an idea from you.. the one about building 1/2 of the partner with team as a commander. I decided to build a companion from Doctor Who by himself. Adric, Mathematic Genius seemed like the best option. He can copy the activated or triggered ability of anything for three mana and tapping. My only problem is, I don't really know his true potential. I have read some articles that use him in conjunction with a Doctor for more colors & they have him copying delayed triggers on spells like Storm King's Thunder (The spells that say whenever you cast your next spell copy it). I am pretty sure that isn't in blue so I will probably focus on enchantments like Ominous Seas, Back from the Brink, Paradox Haze & Mechanized Production. Sorry to bother the comments but I do have a question. If Adric is enchanted with Freed from the Real & I have Training Grounds on the battlefield. (so he activates for U and untaps for U) Could I wait for Paradox Haze to go on the stack, then activate and untap and activate Adric over and over? This would give me multiple upkeeps and I am very curious if that is how it works. Thank you all so much for reading.
Hey Curfew! I run it in Zethi (my list emphasizes avoiding commander tax w/ lots of protection & self-bounce to grab more spells). I also run it in Grazzilax, Illithid Scholar and Goro-Goro and Sotaru cause both of those have return to hand themes. I also run it in my PauperEDH Araumi list.
Oh wow I just added Cryptoplasm to my Clone Tribal deck too (Riku Reflections). I overlooked it because it misses the ETBs, but after playing the list I realized it has the upside of if I want to copy my Clone, but the best clone target(s) are Legendary (my list is only using their stuff, it doesn't have its own good clone targets).
I love these videos! I always find a gem, I play a lord of the Nazgul deck, so let’s say a player targets LotN with removal… then with the removal in the stack I play curfew LotN sees me cast it and I get a wraith, then I bounce the commander and no tax!!!!!????
Hey DB, can you make a video about how you would build the old Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer? I can’t seem to figure out if I want to turn my opponents stuff into artifacts, then steal and sac them. Or if I want to generate artifact tokens and gain benefits from sacrificing or when artifacts enter my graveyard from play while protecting big creature artifacts. Or maybe I want to do both, plus I can’t seem to find any videos within the last 2-5 years of this guy.
I keep trying to fit Dark Triumph, but it just never quite makes it - even in my tribal thrulls deck Here's a fun idea: Run Dauthi Cutthroat with Dauhti's Embrace: Skeet shooter mode activate Also Maze of Shadows in general to deal with Soltari Visionary
I'm playing Crumbling Sanctuary in my rakdos group-hug deck! It turns the game upside down, can rescue you or one of your opponents at low life, it's fun.
What do you think of lu xun, SG, if i may ask? I have a spells/draw izzet deck. Storm + shock on int/sorc mostly. Lu is 4, but a little damage and extra card every turn?
I've been playing Magic for a long time and free cards are always my favorite type of cards in the 99, and I'd like to suggest you a card that is amazing: : ¨Sickening Shoal¨ from the OG Kamigawa.
Crumbling Sanctuary is actually super strong in a mono red deck. I used to have in my Hidetsugu deck synergizing with Curse of Bloodletting, Quest for Pure Flame, Maddening Hex, Price of Progress, Chandra, Awakened Inferno for the emblem, Browbeat (wich is amazing cause you pay 3 mana to draw 3 cards or someone exile 5 cards from their own deck), Ankh of Mishra, Acidic Soil, Citadel of Pain and Buning Earth for the ramping/3+ colors players. The deck used to be strong and really fun. You can win simply putting some damage or Crumbling Sanctuary can win you the game milling your opponents or removing some key cards from their decks. Its almost like a Monolith Commander but in the form of an artifact. If sticks, get out of hand. If dont you just try to win with damage
Hey Demo, I notice you like to spotlight older cards. Have you tried any old-school EDH formats? There's a format called VDH in which you can only use old-border cards (up to Scourge).
@edhdeckbuilding That's fair! I thought that might be the case for both points you said. It's only really the swords and a couple other cards that give protection from green right?
Syr Konrad cares about creature cards entering/leaving the graveyard, not exile. Crumbling Sanctuary puts cards into exile. Syr Konrad's damage would trigger Crumbling Sanctuary, but the exile from Crumbling Sanctuary would not trigger Syr Konrad.

Always good to see another one.
Adding curfew mentally to seven decks.
Used a Dauthi Embrance once to give an opponents creature shadow. In declare blockers I gave the defending player shadow too. xD
That's... Genius
Good call on Curfew. Underplayed card for sure. Several other underplayed cards also mentioned. Good choices, good video.
Cream of the Crop in a Pantlaza deck is very strong. You can manipulate your top before the discover trigger. Really the Cream of the crop

I love curfew played at end of opponent's turn!
Crumbling sanctuary might be interesting in a goad theme, forcing your opponents to attack each other and exiling all their cards.
Dauthi embrace in my Ria Ivor deck, gets the mites out the woodwork
Dauthi embrace is one of my fav gix cards

And it gets around shroud and hexproof.
Very cool card 👍
Cream of the Crop is an all-star in Mayael the Anima, which cares both about having high power creatures and manipulating the top of the library.
Modify Memory is a newer card from CLB that is very similar to Cultural Exchange and gives the option for card advantage.
That’s a pet card of mine in my Queza deck.
Oh hey the discord mods are leaking
Dauthi Embrace fixes that problem with attack triggers and too many blockers. Anikthea is going to love that!
Cryptoplasm seems like an auto-include for clones. Maybe because it’s old? 🤷🏻♂️
Cool finds all around! 🙌
Cultural exchange is one of my favorite effects and card art of all time, glad it was mentioned!
Curfew + board wipe after they all bounce a token is really funny
Crumbling Sanctuary is PERFECT for my Umbris deck!!
Crumbling Sanctuary works well for Umbris since you want lots of your opponents cards in exile.
Cream of the crop could be nice in Faldorn, so you can prepare the top of library for cascade or discover spells
Can’t believe I haven’t seen dark triumph, that’s so good in zombies and rats
This series is the best commander tips out there.
I have Dauthi embrace in my Yuriko deck. It's brutal. I don't play that deck very often, unless I know I'm in a high powered pod where people play with high end cards where they have a high chance of winning by turn 4 or 5.

i would recommend Psychic Surgery and Extract. Surgery shuts down top deck Tutors and if you know the win con you can remove it with extract
I just picked up a “curfew” for my pauper Edh deck.
Crumbling sanctuary is for Umbris!

Cream of the crop is nuts I remember running it in vaevictus asmadi the dire.
Dauthi embrace is handy... shadow is limiting otherwise.
I think wash away is a card i dont see enough of. 1 blue mana commander counter, also has the ability to be a normal counter.
Wooooow Demo, thank you! Now I gotta put my hands on some Cryptoplasms, I didn't know that card! It will happily become a flying zombie in my Geralf, Visionary Stitcher deck! 🧟♂️
Curfew is really a great card, thanks, didnt know this one at all.

Crumbling sanctuary might work in Laelia
Crumbling Sanctuary in my Belbe self-exile Slime Against Humanity deck 😳
I'm playing crumbling Sanctuary in a loot slime against humanity deck, they count themselves in exile !

Crumbling Sanctuary might be good in a Nekusar deck...
I built Xyris mostly because I wanted an excuse to play exchange effects, even though there's no strict synergy, just that it makes 1/1 tokens
i run the crumbling sanctuary in my Heartless hidetsugu, specifically because someone in my group runs the wanderer
What do you think of lu xun, SG, if i may ask?
I have a spells/draw izzet deck. Storm + shock on int/sorc mostly.
Lu is 4, but a little damage and extra card every turn?
