Then the title would be “5 Underwater Crops,” not “5 Underwater Farmers.” The title isn’t clickbait. Also, at the start it did mention some of the crops that we grow in the ocean, like seaweed.
Watching this made me question: Where do we draw the line between symbiosis and syphonophores (e.g; Portuguese Man-o-war)? One could argue if the survival of two species depends solely upon the survival of the other, they could be considered non-integrated syphonophores, meaning while they are physically separate, they still behave as a single organism, which would put Leaf Cutter Ants in that category. Are we on the path of becoming non integrated syphonophores due to our reliance on crops? If so, we need to be more selective about which plants and animals we eat moving forward, based mainly on adaptability. I don't see cows thriving on Mars, for example, regardless of what we do to that planet.
So you are trying to say that we should start eating and adapt to the food, that we can easily grow/harvest on a different planet (say mars for example) if humanity tries to become an interplanetary species?
In a word, no. Being omnivores, we enjoy a varied and broad diet, and have been able to find food sources almost wherever we go. This means that we are not dependent on a symbiotic organism for our continued existence. That said, I agree with you about cows being unsuited for Mars colonization, although for different reasons. Cows require quite a significant amount of biomass every day to live, and while they do produce both milk and meat, they are by far not the most efficient at converting grass to food. Goats are much better milk producers when you look at how much they eat, and rabbits are much better meat producers.
@@jamesburleson1916 You misunderstood, I'm not saying we're wholly dependent on cows. We're not, at this point, what I referred to as non integrated syphonophores. I was asking if we are on a path that would lead to us becoming wholly dependent on crop and livestock species. Currently things like fishing are preventing us from meeting that standard, but in the future that may not be the case.

snails and fungi were like "wouldn't it be funny if... " We choose which delusions we want to follow. Some delusions have more potential than others to enhance the human experience. It could be the delusion of fame and fortune, or that science will fix everything for us. It could be the delusion of religion, or that you are god incarnate. One thing I feel is real is that we are not merely visitors here, not only part of this reality, we are in fact the universe, experiencing itself as individuals. Everything that exists adding its unique conscious perspective. The elements of our bodies were forged in the stars, yet our consciousness is somehow not our body. And how wonderful it is to get the human experience, allowing us to share in great detail our individual perspectives and experiences. Being able to imagine the infinite potential we, as life on earth, have yet to realize. The delusion I choose to follow is that we will collectively understand that we as humanity, are the ones that choose the quality of our experience. The only one telling us it can't be done is ourselves. I would much rather be a simple nobody in a utopian world, all living things in harmony and balance, learning from the intelligence of evolution to advance and create technology and ideas to make life more enjoyable for all of us equally, to protect life from existential threats.
