Best bike hack on my bike is putting felt on my frame to prevent cable rubbing. My dropper post has a lot of slack in the cable when my seat post is down and was rubbing on my frame. Taping a strip of felt where the cable was rubbing made all my problems go away. P.S Favorite youtube channel of all time, thanks for all the amazing videos and help on my mountain bike journey.
Watching the vid of Martins mates taking him back out on two wheels, brought tears to my eyes. You ALL epitomize what true friends are about, comes time to show a mate some love and commitment. The Guinness is on me if you're ever in the Boston area. You're proper sorted!
I was out on my local trail the other night and got a puncture in the rear, didn't have a tube so stuffed the tire up with grass did the job perfect and got me home and down the rough trail
I've heard another one cool hack: to avoid damage of brake levers when crashing, do not tighten them too strong, instead, loose a bit. In a case of heavy impact they will rotate around handlebar and do not break. Probably they will scratch handlebar but it is much better than cracking. This trick can be also useful for rear-mirror on city bikes.
+Roman Shuvalov that's what my friend said.. he experience to have a crush with not too tight levers and it works.. even the shifters if you dont have the ispec thing...
My co worker is sharing this method every time you talk with him on somthing related to handlerbars or break leavers. Unfortunately i forgot about it when i got my new 2019 rocky mountain instinct two months ago and on the first ride i looked back and rode into a light pole... Now the shifting lever with the nice eagle logo is my key chain :/ Alltho i grew to like the new amputee stealthy leaver
You need to wrap wire around the spokes before soldering them, solder by itself won't work especially if they are painted. Kevlar thread would be another and lighter option, add some super glue or epoxy to retain it.
I use old Inner tubes for chainstay protector. I'm a bike mechanic myself, and all those different kind of chainstay protectors out there is either bad quality or not fitted probably to all kind of frames. An old Inner tube wraped around the chainstay is much more effective because of the double layer of rubber, and the perfekt fit you can get with it :-) I just think that it is 100% better and you guys should try it, if you haven't done that yet. ;-)
Rubber mastic tape great for a chainstay protector as well Skateboard grip tape on the brake leavers and shifters also stops any slipping with your gloves on
I use 550 paracord or an old innertube as a chainstay guard. the 550 is nice because it comes in a lot of colors so you can customize it well and it's nylon so it won't rot and it's tough enough to last. The softer makeup also does a great job at keeping noise down. I like it more than the innertubes.
I use an old motocross trick of using teflon pipe tape under your mounts for the brake levers and shifter. Take the tape and wrap it around the bars where you mount your brakes and shifters the reinstall the parts and tighten them up good and snug. This way they are tight enough to not move around or loosen when riding but will rotate on the bars if they get hit in a nasty crash reducing the risk of breaking the levers or mounts.
To keep the bottle safe on rough trails I use the cheapest metal tube bottle holder and bend it a little to tighten the grip. but it has its downside - if you bend the holder to much - you will struggle to put the bottle back into the thing while riding
My (kind of) hack is to run my X-fusion O2 rear shock at around about 5% sag on a DMR Bolt frame. The bike handles more like a hardtail which combined with the Bolt's inherently DJ geometry makes it handle like a dream. In very muddy conditions I pop an old bar end into my fork crown (wheel out first) and into the open end of my cranks spindle to reduce mud build up. A cut beer cosy helps preserve the rear shock.
GMBN your videos are just great! I've spent a lot of time learning with them. Keep doing things that way! I'm starting to ride Mtb, and I'm looking for a great 29 inch bike with hydraulic brakes for less than 600 Euro. What are your suggestions? Thank you so very much from Colombia. Daniel Steven.
I have had bad issues with keeping my water bottle in its cage when flying down through rough sections of trail or whipping the bike around in left hand corners(bottle cage is a right side exit style). My bike hack to keep the water bottle in place while still being able to remove it and drink is the following. Wrap a zip tie around the downtube, securing the part of the loop with duct tape on the bottom side of the down tube. Then take the other end of the loop and slipping it over the mouthpiece of the water bottle. When you want to take a drink simply reach down and flip the zip tie loop off the mouthpiece of the bottle then slide it back on after you return the bottle to the cage. I just did a nasty 50 mile xc race in the northern mountains of GA with fast downhill sections and technical rock gardens and the bottle held firm. I have pictures of this hack but i don't know how to attach them to this post.
+Eric Hile Sounds like a good idea - especially for rough descents, you can tag us on Instagram using #gmbnhackoftheweek or email them to dirtshed@globalmountainbikenetwork.com
If and when GMBN get some subscriber hacks it would be good to do another vid using subscriber info....I use the electrical tape on the dropper post position and have custom cut a Mucky Nutz front fender to my Manitou's (was the Manitou specific version) so it still protects but adds good clearance for 2.35 tyres.....
FYI - Ratty's seat is actually not custom(the one in the pictures at least). It's a WTB High Tail. The new age of long travel trail bikes with larger wheels and dropper posts made the tire constantly buzz the saddle at full travel with the seat dropped, so Chris Cocalis(founder of Pivot bikes) approached WTB with the idea and they got it into production.
+Kevin Clinthorne clipless pedals actually require quite a lot of force to clip in, and unclipping someone else's foot can be hard. Keep in mind that he has no control over his legs at all, so taping them is easy because it just has to stop his feet coming off.
+Rodolfo Padilla Ruiz if your talking about the last one the owner is a famous "ex" pro he does not pedal he cant walk but still wants so ride like he did pre accident.
Electrical tape artfully applied on a 1x drivetrain and disc bike can mean one cable going down the down tube rather than 2, or if you run an ebike like me, several into one, but if weight is your thng, full bike disassembly and take it to a sandblast, polish her up and have it anodized, or leave it bare if aluminium, clear powder coat for steel, shaves off more than you think, also take any of the brazeons off that you don't use, or run a closed cable system and remove nearly all of them, replace what you can with zipties, shaves as much weight as possible.
+Ronan Carter Grinding off cable guides to save weight, and then adding more weight than you removed by running full length cable housing? Really? I think ill do it, i've been wondering how I could simultaneously take a grinder to my bike frame and add some grams, this sounds like a good way to do that.
+Dingus “dingusmagee” Magee No one likes to add weight to there bike bUt the benefit of a full cable is that your gears will have smoother shifting for longer. V=Thanks for your comment. Marc
+Global Mountain Bike Network What is the name of that glue on Gee Atherton's Chain Stay Protector and where can i buy it from? I think is is a great idea and looks good when neatly moulded to the frame
+samanddogs Hi, perhaps, but you need to make sure the wheel is plum before you do and also know what you're doing. Alternatively use heavier weight stiffer spokes. You may also need to check the tension on your wheel to make sure they are balanced, if not this can cause the wheel to knock out of true easily.
Well, don't think asking for a custom part from manufacturers is a hack... And it's the Nicolai is nice too but again, not a hack.. Actually only like 2 or 3 of these are hacks... And instead of the foam you can also use old inner Tubes just be careful where you put it since it might rub against something, it's useful to protect shocks like on the Wilson.
Which ones weren't hacks? I agree that while Martyn's was a hack, it probably is not available to the average rider. Also the custom suspension isn't really a hack either. The rest seemed pretty good though
I have a canyon strive al, and i have no complains About iT. Actualy they deliverd 1 week earlier. I am verry saticefied About the service. And Offcorse the bike is a great, no complains here. Grtz
+Anton Lallinec But still, it would be cool to try.... I've seen people having steering wheel from a car instead of handlebars... well, a seat probably wouldn't be so great for... well, the people who are not disabled. But looks cool though.
a good hack is if u can't get cycling over shoes to keep ur fett warm then get a plastic bag a dog poo back would be good and u put feet in them after u have put your socks on and then put your shoes on with the plastic bags on and they will keep the wind out
Why does Martyn tape his feet to the pedals? I would've thought it would be easier to use clips and tape his feet for extra protection. Someone please tell me the reasons why he doesn't use clips.

Soldered spokes may increase stiffness marginally (if at all), however traditionally spokes are soldered to prevent loose spokes from causing more damage should on break.
Everything functions properly ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
The only "hack" I did on my bike was to put the brake levers inside the bars and the shifters outside (closer to the grips). That way I have smooth single finger braking as well as the shifter levers at the tips of my thumbs. I never have to move my hands which comes really handy on the descents. Of course, it doesn't work with all components.
so basicley manufacters are misleading us then if thay are all custom but anyways fuck it idc roll on tomorrow to get back in my bike only things i trust in life is my babys all 5 2x 26in hardtails 1x bmx 1x 24in and some hybrid thing for riding to town on for errands all been riding to town wich is about 9 miles away there 9miles back plus a few extra miles to ride around town on love my bikes

Bryon Kielian That's a great tip. I don't have an old tube lying around, but I do have a few hundred feet of 550 cord. Thanks.
I run Shimano 105 road rear mech rather than a deore or Xt as it is more tucked out the way. Shifts like a dream
That is because it is most likely a shorter cage which may be good for you but it will restrict cassette sizes
+Josh Smart sure does I'm running a 9sp 11-32 cassette, pretty small!
Conor Maybe a Roadlink could get you up to 42tooth cog? Are you still able to marry mtb shifters with the road mech?
@@alantaylor6691 only on 9 or less gears, 10speed and above use different cable pull ratios

That's also not a custom rs1... Specialized does that on the World Cup epic. It's 90'm front and rear... Research.... Then vlog
nothing that anyone hasnt been doing for years and years
The only "hack" I did on my bike was to put the brake levers inside the bars and the shifters outside (closer to the grips). That way I have smooth single finger braking as well as the shifter levers at the tips of my thumbs. I never have to move my hands which comes really handy on the descents. Of course, it doesn't work with all components.
That's not a cut saddle... That's a wtb hightail... Smfh
electrical tape for everything!!!
Those bikes tho-they are at the age where they don't look new and cool and they don't look retro and cool!
