Using Twang in Your Singing

  • Adding a vocal “edge” to your voice can be exciting - and taking this into your higher range can be dramatic - says David Combes.
When Janice in the TV show Friends says “Oh My Gawd...” - that is twang at its limit. Singers like Anastacia, use this same effect to add drama and a laser-beam focus to their vocals.
So, what is it? It’s a natural effect - just think of a baby crying or children taunting each other in a playground (nah-nah, n-nah-nah!).
Singers like Chaka Kahn, Stevie Wonder and many others use it without turning it up to “10” - to give some “cut” or “edge” to higher notes. - see the full article here: www.voicecounci...

Stevie Wonder has a very bright and focused voice, so I've always noticed the twang. Great video.

I have my own ideas, but you never said how the "slight twang " done by Stevie Wonder is achieved.

Urkel saying "did I do that?" Is more effective for me. That's ingrained permanently in my brain, lol. Janice is good too, I'm just letting you know if another option.

Stevie still sings the same key as in his younger days. Not the same case for Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck.

Thats not twang. Twang is country accent in singing.

Chris W lol no. A lot of country singers use twang, but is not a matter of accent.

Twang is what MAKES the country accent in the first place, Einstein.
