    This was the creativity and thought process in 1960...and with pencil and draught board ...no CAD CAM ....WOW...leaves todays architecture for dead. Thank you for this spectacular tour!

      You're welcome! Great that you liked the video. It keeps surprising me how inventive Lautner's houses are and it's almost unbelievable that they were made in a time that you could only design with hand made drawings. Each house by Lautner is different than the other one and each one is full of smart details, inventions and features. That is what I like about making these videos: to more you look into the designs, the better they become.

  • @TheReverb1

    The solutions Mr Lautner found in each design to the intricacies of the plots without losing his style; not only is quite remarkable but not achieved by most modern Architects.

      The landscape dictates the enginering of the house, this makes each design very different from the other one. The more you look into the design, the more interesting they become. They are all full of surprises. By making these videos I found new construction details each time.

    Not as if we didn't know this already, but Lautner was a genius. The diversity in his designs is like no other. And even though he is celebrated i still feel like he was way more important than we give him credit for.
    Thank you as always Jop, even for dedicated followers of Lautner's houses your videos hold a lot of information.

    You said, Jop, that John Lautner never built the same house twice, but this one is truly spectacular in a way all its own. I have never even seen a house remotely like this one. I love the feeling it has of being safe in a castle, and yet having freedom of views and the closeness of nature.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 місяців тому

      This is my nr. 1 favorite by Lautner. The funny thing is that it is by far not as remote as it seems: it's located by in a tense populated neighbourhood of Hollywood and it's enclosed by adjacent houses from all sides. Still by a clever placing of bushes and trees it looks very isolated and remote. I love every bit of it's brilliant design.

    He seems to me the architect who achieves the impossible. And then you explain it, but the house still looks like it's going to fall down the hill. But they never do, and he built one right after another. They amaze me in countless ways. They look magical, which is the gift of the best & most masterful architect. This one had up-to-date decor, too, which was fun. That "atomic sunburst" chandelier was a showstopper!!!

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  2 роки тому +1

      ''The architect who achieves the impossible'''That's the right way to describe John Lautner. The more you study the houses the more amazing and magical they become. The atomic sunburst chandelier was a detail that I personally overlooked, now you mentioned it, I notice it. So even I get surprised after study all these photos. Thank you! :)

    I never thought I'd get to go through the interior of "my" favorite Lautner house like this. Well done. But it also points out why none of the books on Lautner ever show the interior of the addition. It pales in comparison to the main house. Maybe there were budgetary constraints or too much owner involvement. But I think John was really a set designer at heart. Why would Hollywood use so many of his works for location shoots.

    Due to more modern glass technology, Lautner had more freedom to create high glass walls than Wright had. I believe Lautner may have used Hope’s window company where he could achieve thinner window profiles, and larger glass sections.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  Рік тому

      I don't know which glass company Lautner used: the glass panels are huge and high, I don't know how thick the glass is. It must be very expensive and top quality. A few decades before the house, these glass panels didn't exist so indeed Wright never could have used them, otherwise he probably would have used it.

      There is a large door which you can see at 7:52 , this door can be fully opened and from the laundry and utility room a part of the wall can slide open. Check the floorplan at 8:00 , on the lower floorlevel you can bring furniture in through the opening which you can see at the floorplan at 9:49

    anyone who sees this house as a close inspiration from Falling Waters doesn't know anything about architecture. There is no greater credit to John Lautner than that he continued to credit Wright throughout his career even after he clearly surpassed him. What passes as residential architecture in LA today pales in comparison. By any standard the Wolff residence is a masterpiece.

I wish I could make the videos faster, unfortunately each video takes a lot of time to make.

      Maybe because Wright miscalculated the cantilever of Fallingwater. The contractor had to change it, otherwise it fell down.

      I love both F.L Wright and John Lautner equally. So when my favorite architect brings a hommage to my other favorite that's a combination of my two other favorite styles. Also this house is very livable and comfortable. The Elrod, Beyer and Marbrisa are more boundarie pushing designs and more original, so from an artistic point of view they are better. But this house is my personal choice to live in. I just love the atmosphere of this house. I'm a sucker for flagstone though... :)
