Idyllic Day at Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Cottage in Lake District, U.K.

Enjoy this relaxing tour of Hill Top Cottage, the beloved sanctuary and inspiration for Beatrix Potter, which she bought in 1905 with proceeds from her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Hill Top is located in Near Sawrey, a Lake District village set amidst rolling farmland and wooded hillsides by lake Windermere. The village of Hawkshead, with its whitewashed cottages, cobbled streets and cosy pubs is a short journey away as are scenic walks along the shores of Esthwaite Water. Full of Beatrix's favourite things, it was the place that inspired her stories and her love for the Lake District.
Beatrix used Hill Top itself and the surrounding countryside as inspiration for many of her subsequent books. In The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907) it is home to Tabitha Twitchit and her three mischievous kittens, Moppet, Mittens and Tom. In The Tale of Samuel Whiskers (1908), Tom Kitten is captured by rats who scamper up Hill Top’s staircase.
The lovely cottage garden is a haphazard mix of flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables. Make your way up the garden path to the front door and see for yourself why Beatrix loved this place.
After her death, Beatrix bequeathed fifteen farms and over 4,000 acres to the National Trust.
Hill Top is open from 10 February to 3 November, and advanced booking is required to guarantee entry to the House & Garden. Tickets go on sale each Thursday and you can book two weeks in advance.
