I had the same and assumed mine could be broken as well, but it turned out I was wrong! If you have 5th linked, you can go: 5 -> 125 -> 25 -> (a tricky step) 235 -> 1235 -> 35 -> (another tricky step) 345 -> 12345. You’ve restored the puzzle back to how it was. Then go: 12345 -> 2345 -> 245 -> 1245 -> 45 -> 4. From there, 4 -> 124 -> 24 -> 234 -> 1234. Now you have one ring less. 34, 3, 123, 23, 2, 12, ø.
