No More Aphids With NO Pesticides!

  • Aphids used to be a big problem in my garden until I stopped fertilizing so heavily. Now I find that I usually only get aphids in the summer time when I can't keep up with irrigation leading to stressed overheated plants that are screaming for aphids to come attack them. Now for the first time I have the reverse problem, way too much water from all the rain we have been getting! This has stressed out my kale plants which are tucked into a pocket of my garden that barely gets any direct sun near the soil level leading to soggy soil. Historically I have battled with the aphids through using organic pesticides but I quickly found that it was just a game of cat and mouse leading to lots of pesticides use that could harm other insects. Instead I have switched to fully using water to blast away aphids and stunt their populations. This has the added benefit of allowing beneficial insects to step in at some point as well since we aren't using any pesticides!

@@heyits_cat8966 the amusement park is inside the middle of the mall. A bug would have to really work to get to the park's foliage from an open door ( there are no doors near the park, you have to weave through the mall to get to it) and even if one of the skylight panels was open it's 4 stories up so an aphid would have to work to get in. And maybe it traveled on a person (from their home, traveled in the car or public transit to the parking garage and into the mall unscathed), but the foliage isn't really reachable by the people standing around in line... for something to crawl from a shirt or pant it would have to crawl from a bench or something. Not impossible but way more likely they just brought in a contaminated plant that caused an infestation.

@@ajm935 once aphids get inside, because there are no predators about, they can easily take over. This can happen with indoor herbs or plants on high balconies. But just look around your yard until you find a spider and relocate them to your plants. Finding a spider that’s already in your garden will be the best since they’re already used to the environment & can start working right away.

I left them a bit long, their branches intermingled, and then I noticed one had aphids everywhere. Weird thing was, the other bush, even where touching the first, had no aphids. I was about to grab the toxic chemicals to deal with them, and then noticed a few ladybugs. I decided not to spray, as lady bugs seem to be getting rarer and rarer. Three days later, a hundred or so lady bugs on the rose, finishing off the last few aphids. Amazing when nature shows us how to do it right.

They just feed on the new growth so that is where I concentrate the blast of water. I go out there every other day and that's all I need to do. Usually just for a week. If I feel especially ambitious, I'll go out there in the evening with a tablespoon of Murphy's oil soap mixed in a quart of water in a spray bottle. Problem solved. You don't need to do this. Just plant sunflowers around your garden. Ants will do the work for you. They remove aphids from the crops, place them on the sunflowers and then chew their wings off so they can't leave. They like the sweet sticky substance the aphids make when they chew the sunflower leaves. This keeps both the aphids AND the ants off your plants.
Aphids also hate marigolds, so planting those around your garden helps repel them and attract bees.

This is absolutely not true. In fact ants farm aphids. They tend to them like kings because aphids produce little droplets of nectar that the ants devour. An ant would not move an aphid and they certainly don't take their legs off. They need them to walk around to produce and release the nectar from their anus that keeps the ants well fed. In fact, the ants protect the aphids from other predators such as ladybugs and will kill the ladybugs for trying to get to the aphids
I have hundreds of sunflowers that surround my garden each year like a privacy fence and still battle aphids never ever seen one on a sunflower

Also if calcium can't be uptook from the soil to form calcium oxolate (same thing that correlates with human kidney stone risk), the plant has a harder time defending itself. There was a really cool video a couple years back where they mimicked catapillers chewing on plant leaves and used a special light to show the calcium oxolates increase dramatically in their leaves. Some plants use a combination of terpenes as well, but Kale moreso oxolates.
