I had a '73 Pinto station wagon. My brother had a later model (re-designed) Pinto. Ford KNEW the car was dangerous. People DIED. People were injured. Nobody was fired Nobody went to jail. They all retired with big pensions. Rich white boy justice.
Yeah, this is a bit of a clickbait title. I'm sure plenty of models were more dangerous. Like probably every car through the 1950s. Rear-end collisions aren't the only type of collisions. Other cars didn't fireball nearly as often, but many cars are never involved in rear collisions. I can't excuse Ford's behaviour in this matter, but stats suggest the Pinto as safe or safer than most of it's competitors.
Something to remember is there was 27 deaths from the Ford Pinto fiery crashes before the NTSB went after it. That is 27 to many. Chevrolet built and sold over 10 million PU trucks from 1972 to 1987 with saddle fuel tanks killed over 150 people in fiery crashes but it was not publicized. Not sure why no one went after the Chevy like they went after the Ford Pinto. Maybe a payoff or maybe the right person was not killed in the Chevy PU like the Chevy Corvair or the Ford Pinto. If Ford would have used the more modern plastic collision resistance fuel tanks that started production in 1972 instead of the two pice steel tanks the fire problem would not have happened. Why Ralph Nader went after the Pinto and the Chevy Corvair and not the Chevy PU with saddle tanks is a good question.
They did go after the chevy side saddle gas tanks. NBC was busted faking explosion and fires while covering the story. Also it must be pointed out that the Chevy tanks were an option that was not on every truck. The pinto's fuel tank was standard on all models.
Thanks for watching!!

I believe studies have been reevaluated to show the Pinto no more deadly than many other vehicles. We had one.

I always wondered why the Ford Pintos just vanished off the roads so fast.
