  • This is what happens when you plant black bamboo not in a container, one shoot is 8ft tall. Looks like we'll have bamboo springing up all over the place!

Not all black bamboo runs straightaway. Phyllostachys nigra bought as a clump forming plant and planted in my garden took 15 years to run. By then it was over 15 ft tall by 5 ft wide and absolutely beautiful. Over the years I supplied many people with the lovely canes (about 30 a year). The side branches make excellent plant supports too. However, last summer it ran off and popped up everywhere within 10 ft of the main plant. It came through patio slabs and the lawn and in the hedge. In November 2020 I cut it all down to ground level intending to dig it up this spring. It's now about 2 ft, so I must do it soon. I love it though and will buy it again but keep in a large pot. It's also one of the messiest plants in the garden, shedding culm leaves which blow all over the place.

Thanks for this video, very simple and cut to the chase. I just bought some black bamboo seeds and the seller said that theyre clumping bamboo, but from seeing your video I understand that they will probably run as they get older.
I shall plant them in large pots or above ground containers.
    Cheers from the US

Phyllostachys Nigra is definitely a runner, though not a really aggressive one as @M Tilford stated. Mild temps may help slow it down too.

I'm creating a long above ground bed from slabs , with a concrete barrier inside the pot as well as underneath in addition to a rhizome barrier. I'm hoping my running bamboo will spread up the length of this pot without giving me or my neighbours any hassle. Wish me luck, from southern England.

You've noticed how quickly and easily concrete cracks, right? I hope that runner barrier was intended for bamboo, otherwise you're going to be in for it in a year or two.

This spreading is exactly what i want from the plant. Thank you for sharing.

I think from looking at books ect and video s of the black nigra bamboo that it would be safer to put it in a large planter to save alot of hastle in a few years.lovely specimen though .

Two men speaking as one…love the melodic way you finish each other’s thoughts. I thought I heard long ago about them being invasive. What kind of buckets did you use? I ordered 200 black bamboo seeds so I bought 20 food grade 5 gallon buckets. 👍👎?

just put an anti-rhizome barrier before planting the plant.

@Daniel would you be able to send me cuttings of the black bamboo please? To NCL?

Well that cinches my choice of bamboo for going offgrid with.
Food, shelter, cordage, building material, insulation, oh, and it burns too...

I wouldn't rule it out, I think a lot of people recommend against runners as many people plant it in the ground and hope for the best (which is just asking for trouble). If you do your research and put in the prepwork to adequately contain it,it should work wonderfully. Best if luck it's a great idea to use it as a self sustainable resource.

@@isobelb5750 exactly, nothing to stop one from creating a buried barrier that is unseen but prevents spread, depth would be custom to species etc...

YES. Not extremely aggressive until it's about ten years old, but then better hold onto your hat...or cowl as the case may be.

This info is wrong!! There are so many kinds of bamboo and they are classified as runners or cumpers, being black or green has nothing to do with it. There are black clumpers and green runners. Best to know what you are buying first!!
