One of my favorite screening questions is, "what is the most important thing to you in finding the right therapist?"

I was listening to "the client" at the beginning of your video, and all of a sudden, silence. Turns out my video was just buffering. I thought you hung up! 😂

Thank you so much for the video. As a new brand therapist I feel the first phone call more as a marketing as my goal is to convince the potential client that I am here to help them. My goal to build rapport and show empathy. So, I usually give the clients options do they want me to tell about myself and what they can expect or they rather tell me why the decided to reach out therapist now. They will answer to screen questions while completing initial paperwork. So, it's interesting that my approach is so much different

I am curious why you find it important to do those screening questions? Why do you need indication of SUDs before starting therapy? (Guenuinely curious). Generally I am just looking for presenting issues and fit. I am realizing I am missing something in my approach for sure. I think it's about explaining my approach but it is also possibly about vetting the client...

How common are these? I've had a total of 5 therapists, but I never heard of this before.

It depends. I haven't been talking to a lot of clients before we meet. It used to be standard practice back in the day (pre-internet).

I appreciate this video so much (and all of your videos!)
I've heard of therapists refraining from asking screening questions but rather just building rapport, ask about scheduling and needs of the client, then allowing the client to ask the therapist questions. Then, after both people feel good and want to move forward with the relationship, the therapist sends the client a document via the therapy portal that has the screening intake questions. YES on having an FAQ spot on the website that lists this step by step so there's no confusion.
