(Just a little bit of an explanation).
The thing is, Wei Wuxian, also known as the Yiling Patriarch (you'll learn later why he is known as the Yiling Patriarch), died 16 years ago by falling off the cliff you saw in the very first scene. & The person named Mo Xuanyu is their (mo family's) nephew, and he killed himself to bring back Wei Wuxian's soul. So, it’s not wei wuxian himself but his soul is in Mo Xuanyu’s body. & He had to act crazy because that's how mo xuanyu was pretending to be, to keep himself safe. Mo Xuanyu wanted to take revenge on his family/enemies for the bad things they did to him. He was not strong enough to take revenge himself, which is why he brought back Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian had to kill them; otherwise, his scars wouldn’t heal, and he might die. I know you probably kinda get that but I hope the explanation helped you a little bit. other than that if you're still confused about something, you can ask!! 😂

They didn’t have a big budget back then, which is why you might notice some funny CGI here and there a little bit. Despite that, they still did a great job with the effects though. The series had a relatively modest budget but still managed to deliver high production values and extensive special effects. "The Untamed" became super popular both domestically and internationally, getting praise for its storytelling, character development, and visual appeal.
And to be honest, you're going to be confused until the third episode. 😂 It's not going to be easy to fully understand because it's the kind of drama where, no matter how many times you've watched it, you're going to notice new things every time. So, don't be overwhelmed; it’s going to be interesting eventually. By the way, it's more focused on mystery, fights, and cultivation rather than their relationship. That's why people consider it a bromance, but it's clearly a BL with censorship. Those who have read the novel and know about it understand very well what it actually is. Their relationship is very subtle in the drama, but the novel is R-rated. It's an adaptation of the novel, with a little bit of improvisation and obviously some censorship, but it’s not completely different.

I always stand by the fact that even if it's considered a bromance in China it's still a BL. Like, I feel like it doesn't have to be said outright to be able to obviously tell that it is.
Case in point: I was like, "Holy shit!" just now when the storyteller got his gold. You're not meant to fully understand the first two episodes until, like, the 2/3s of the way into the series.

Xiaozhan is an amazing actor, he's just too good to be true. That's why his hardwork worth it. Now he's one of the best actor & top actor in China. Even popular worldwide. Yes wang yibo too but as an actor xiaozhan has more popularity but as a dancer wang yibo is incomparable. Such an phenomenal dancer.
Lmao actors will always be thankful to this drama not just main leads but everyone this changed there whole career life for better yes 227 incident was very créul but now Xiao Zhan is thriving like no one else that guy is #/1 celeb in China very much loved globally as well. Wang Yibo doing amazing as well so pls don't call it unfortunate in my opinion its blessing for them. Not to forget Stiphanne over extragratted and gave some wrong info so don't believe everything. Xiao Zhan even took Wei Wuxian red ribbon home that how much he loved his role.
I don't think the actors were unfortunate 😂 because I believe it was fortunate that they worked in this drama. I know that phase was unfortunate for a short period of time, but after the show, the love, popularity, and success they had were incomparable. To be honest, the incidents are over-exaggerations of what you've seen. Yes, he had to suffer because of that incident, but some things are just over-dramatically explained.
Exactly 💯! The untamed was a life changing experience for them in a good way & a little bit bad Way. But everything worth it. The untamed is still one of the best BL drama ever. Still popular among fans.

Absolutely 💯. I can't even imagine any other actors playing Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. It's honestly a blessing for their careers to be in that show. Imagine if they hadn’t done it! They’d probably still be struggling, and it doesn’t mean they were bad actors, but sometimes our luck isn't on our side. Anyway, each and every character has its own fanbase; that’s how big the show is.

To clear the confusion I'll try to explain the best i can, please bear with me on this one im not that great with explaining things
Mo Xuanyu was the og owner of the body, he sacrificed his body and summoned Wei Wuxian. Now Wei wuxian is now in Mo xuanyu's body or to be clear Mo xuanyu's body is his now. The cuts on his arm represents the people who mo xuanyu wants to get revenge on and if wei wuxian doesn't kill them, directly or not, the wounds wont heal and he might die and his soul will perish like what happened to mo xuanyu's soul after sacrificing his body. I tried lol
Next, Mo xuanyu is known in his village as a madman or a psycho so wei wuxian uses that to his advantage and acts like it so ppl wont get suspicious of him, thats why he acts a bit childish. He was feared by everyone and almost the whole world wanted him dead, its understandable why he didn't wanna get found out
Ppl here has like 2 to 3 names so u might get confused there for example Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan is his Birth name the "Lan" being his Family name or Surname and then there's some ppl calling him "Lan Wanji" thats his courtesy name, Courtesy names are traditionally given to chinese men but its no longer a practice in modern times. And then "Hangguang-Jun" is like a title bestowed to him👌
As for the powers thing its not magic or powers it's called cultivation and you guys might wanna do ur own research on that to avoid confusion or just continue the show and just learn it from there

I think someone should explain this to you because you will be hearing a lot of names in the show.. From my understanding, in ancient China, someone, especially in the elite family, can be known by a lot of names.
I'll give an example of the 2 main characters in here.
1st lead:
Birth name: Wei Ying (used by family and really close friends to call you. If someone who is not close to you uses it, it can be considered rude)
Coming-of-age name: Wei Wuxian (usually given by parents or teacher during your come-of-age ceremony, used by colleagues and public to call you)
Official name: Yilling Patriarch (more like a title name given to you because of your reputation and achievement so not everyone has it)
For the 2nd lead:
Birth name: Lan Zhan
Coming-of-age name: Lan Wangji
Official name: Hanguang jun

That's slow burn drama the first 3 ep is confusing not just for u but everyone who started it so dw, cgi is not so great bcs it has very less budget but story, acting, visual, set, etc are so f good. It's a drama that made people read novels of f 199+ chapter so u would understand how good it is
So... like everyone said it's confusing at first but later on, you just wanna watch to solve the mystery. When I started watching this, I wasn't sure about will I watch it till the end, but it keeps getting more interesting. And after watching the whole drama I can say it's worth it! I hope u will read my comment first of all u should know about chinese cultivation and people who cultivate are cultivators or practitioners basically spiritual cultivation is practicing martial arts with sword, archery, blade, etc... and mystical arts like talismans, spells, instruments(u can see lan zhan played instrument it's gu qin chinese instrument) in cultivation world people cultivate to a certain level to attain immortality it will take 100 years or 200 and more this is about spiritual cultivation did u see those blood arrays on ground that is blood magic means wicked tricks which are not allowed in cultivation world and all are not cultivators major clans which are 5 (wen clan, jin clan, lan clan(lan zhan's clan), nie clan, jiang clan(wei wuxian's clan he is not a jiang because he is adopted by jiang clan leader) and minor clans only have cultivators but if anyone have any connection to a cultivation clan like mo xuanyu he is illegitimate son of jin clan leader jin guangshan they can also be cultivators mo xuanyu is also cultivator

But if you is a cultivator's descendants you have more potential to become cultivators. This is similar to the concept of wizards in Harry Potter, the difference is that if the power is not trained it will not come out.
Btw, even if Mo Xuanyu is a son of Jin Clan leader, his Cultivation is not that good,(its not good actually, the main reason is probably because he started at the age of 13, even though generally cultivators start practicing from the age of 5, but if i remember correctly his potential is actually not high) maybe you can say its like squib in HP (but squibs really don't have any magic)

let me explain (without spoiler ) : after 16 years of the death of wei wuxian , mo xuyan a man of the mo familly who has been treated so badly by the mo familly and treated him like a mad guy had enough so he gave his body to wei wuxian ( the mo family didn't know he wasn't mo xuyan because since he was young he used to wear that mask so no one knew how he actually looks like ), so he sacrificed his body to wei wuxian in exchange for him to revange him of all people who opressed him , the scars on wei wuxian's arm represent the people he should kill to take revenge of .
in this world not all people have powers , only the cultivators who have been training since they were child who has powers )
wei wuxian = wei ying ( his cultivator name) = Yiling Patriarch
Lan zhan = hangunjun

Saw this and immediately subbed, the wait for them all to be released is gonna be sooo painful.
The budget was low for this that's why cgi looks so cheap. But the story is worth it. It'll be interesting as you go on. And also if you like music you can pay attention to some background tracks playing in episodes cause one of the reasons I rewatch the untamed is for the bgm apart from the storyline.
he was just like me at the beginning of this series, I hadn't liked it, I wasn't even a little intrigued, the Special effects didn't please me and I gave up on the first few episodes, then I was blessed with the desire to try to continue watching after a good while, when I I forced myself to watch it again, I FELL IN LOVE, I didn't stop watching, I just watched it all day, I was dying to know what happened in the next episode, nowadays I've already watched this entire series 4 times or more and now I'm watching it again, I don't regret it and you won't regret it, the characters are incredible, the story is perfect, you won't even bother with the Special effects
It's because Mo Xuanyu, the body that Wei Wuxian possessed decided to offer a ritual to Wei Wuxian and the price is offering his body to him. That's why Wei Wuxian possessed the body, Wei Wuxian doesn't have a choice but to be in the body.
The scars are equivalent to life, means a life of a person. Each scar corresponds to the people that hurt Mo Xuanyu. Mo Xuanyu wanted to kill those people so We Wuxian needed to kill them.
It's like, forcing Wei Wuxian to possessed the body while binding him into a curse of having scars forever that will never heal as long as you didn't achieve Mo Xuanyu's wishes.
He tried to humiliate the Mo family, the one where he act stupid and a fool. Humiliation might achieve Mo Xuanyu's wishes but as you can see, the scars still didn't heal so he thought that he really need to kill them.

about the world bild up: it's a magical world where The Cultivators cultivate Chi energy and can do magic things like fly, fight spirits etc. It's common for the c-ent. There are many genres. This one is knowns as a mix of wuxia and xianxia. There are elements of magic, cultivators, ghosts and folklore but also heroes, martial arts and chivalry.
The series is worth watching. You need to push through the first 3-4 episodes. Everything will be explained eventually but there is no instant gratification. It will be done at the right time. And that is a good story telling.
Censored romance is still romance guys, it's a BL, not a bromance lmao. It's made obvious enough in the show despite the censorship. but hey there's nothing that says you can't relate to the characters anyway when it comes to stuff other than the romance :) so excited for this reaction, this show gets better and better every episode!

This is def one of those shows where you really just have to trust the process. I wasn't fully invested until around Ep. 10 or so, but I hung in there because friends kept telling me to and it's SO worth it!

Okay lemme give a quick explanations of this episode.
So we have the guy in black who threw himself off the cliff and died. That's Wei WuXian. Then we have the guy who tried to save him in white with a forhead band (which is a symbol of his clan). That's Lan Zhan.
Now, Wei Wu Xian dies, however 16 years later a boy in an abusive household, Mo XuanYu, decides to sacrafice his body to WeiWuXian's soul. Meaning his soul exchanged with Wei WuXian. He did this because, he was abused to the point that he wanted revenge on the whole family, and Wei WuXian who was known as the greatest evil 16 years ago would be perfect for that. Wei WuXian's soul gets sucked into Mo Xuan Yu's body, so based off appearances no one should rlly recognise Wei Wu Xian in Mo Xuan Yu. Mo Xuan Yu was also crazy, literally, and always wore a mask to hide his appearance. So when Wei Wu Xian came back to life, he just continued acting like Mo Xuan Yu so he wouldnt be caught (which is why he's so crazy). We see WuXian (now in mo xuan yu's body) avoiding the clan (Lan Clan) with the blue forehead bands, he is scared they will recognise him or more accurately he is scared Lan Zhan (the man who tried to save him) is also visiting the Mo Family with the youger disciples of the Lan Clan, may recognise him. Since the disciples are the younger generation of the Lan Clan, they end up not knowing who Wei WuXian is, they didn't experience (or remember) the time when he was big 16 years ago.
That's about all for now😊
Oh yea each scar on him, is a reminder of the enemy's he needs to kill. An enemy that Mo Xuan Yu wanted him to kill in return for giving his body up to him. So his scar heals up every time he kills one enemy. 1 scar stays, meaning he he still hasn't found Mo Xuan Yu's last enemy he has to kill for the scar to heal.
See I have watched the untamed almost 20 times and it never gets old. Now I'll watch it again with you guys

Another thing that will make it easier for you to know going into this drama is the clans and places where the clans reside.
A clan is basically an accumulation of smaller families with the same ancestry, so they have the same family name. Or it can be formed by a family taking in desciples and they have a master-student relationship. However, there will be a main family (usually the biggest or most influential) that leads the clan while the other members of the clan might be from the other smaller families with the same ancestry or people adopted into the clan as desciples.
There are a lot of clans, but there are 5 clans that are the main and biggest in this drama. These are the clans and the places where the main family of each clan reside in.
- The Wen clan at Nightless City of Qishan
- The Lan clan at Cloud Recesses of Gusu
-The Jiang clan at Lotus Pier of Yunmeng
- The Jin clan at Golden Carp Tower of Lanling
- The Nie clan at Impure Realm of Qinghe

Think of it as a live action of a manga/anime. Then you wouldn't feel so weird. It's actually a fantasy world where people cultivated to get super power and slow down/stop their aging.
I think the first thing to understand about the story is to know more about the genre of this drama, which is "Xianxia", so that you wouldn't be confused about their world.
Xianxia, meaning “immortal heroes,” is a Chinese fantasy genre that focuses on characters who undergo meditation and training to become transcendental beings. It is often called “cultivation fantasy” by western readers, and the people who learn it called as "cultivators". They are immortals, that's why the characters from 16 years ago will still look the same.

Regarding Netflix vs Viki: I think it depends on what you're trying to get out of the subs. I personally prefer the viki subs because they respect usage of honorifics, so for example when a character calls his sister "jie" they'll actually put "sister" there instead of just putting the sister's name. The Netflix subs are made with a wider target audience in mind who aren't necessarily familiar with such forms of adress, meanwhile Viki subbers know that a large majority of their audience will be very familiar with these.

funny how wei wuxian is the best character ive ever seen and the most powerful at that, has the kindest nature and beautiful soul, merciful thoughtful loyal plus he's really cute and funny AND people remember him as the merciless cold blooded demon king lmao
The Untamed is one of those shows where going in blind and watching it the first time you generally dont have a huge inclination to what's going on. Like i watched the show, read bits and pieces of the book, listened to audio drama clips, watched the anime, and looked things up on Google to fully understand what was going on. That's how well thought out the storyline is to this show. You watch it multiple times and do research, and you still find new stuff about it every single time. It's good that you have viewers explaining it to you along the way because i think having some clarification will allow you to enjoy the show more and allow you to focus on the drama with minimal confusion. The Untamed will forever be on my top three list of favorite shows I've ever watched!

BY THE WAY it's totally okay for you guys to not being used to it bcs the storyline is kinda complicated and chinese dramas tend to have a lots of timelines at the same episode . But i assure you this is one of the best plots ive ever read (ive read the novel, watched the anime and watched the show, and believe me ive watched literally %80 of asian dramas, thai japanese chinese korean and even taiwanese included lmao) it really progresses slowly but its realllllllllllllly good

I have to say, this was made for a chinese audience, and probably largely fans of the novel. There's a lot of Chinese Xianxia and wuxia tropes that are meaningless to us in the West, hence the confusion. The cultivators are the ones with powers, but this exits in a cultural context of animism, where even trees or animals can cultivate to consciousness and have powers. It is A LOT to adjust to. But we love it so much

To tell you so you don't mistake him, he was putting an act as the "stupid lunatic weirdo" so no one discover or doubts on his identity, he can obviously beat the shit outta all of them lmao so it's kind of hilarious to see him putt on the act. Wei Wuxian's character is that he is extremely smart and very strong but very childish sometimes ,the act was him tryna not break the character of the guy who sacrificed his body to exchange souls so that Wei Ying (Wei Wuxian) revenge him which is what he tryna do (also to get rid of those scars)
The act he putt on at the start was indeed necessary cuz he was trying to humiliate and take revenge on the Mo clan lmao

The Untamed was my drama withdrawal from "Guardian" which is my first BL Novel based C-drama. Guardian has same "reincarnation" plot but it's in modern world setup with different cases every episodes but it's all connected. Fun fact, i haven't watch any drama again from this casts of both The Untamed & Guardian. I'm not even into BL nor i don't ship them. 😅😅😅

Here the summary of first episode
Wei Wuxian is the main character, he died after falling from the cliff but Mo Xuanyu take the body and keep it. Mo Xuanyu is known as lowly child of his family, he been tortured and treated like a mad man so he become one to hide his pain. While Mo Xuanyu can't take it anymore he did chants to revive Wei Wuxian from the death just for revenge. So it's a new life of Wei Wuxian but to keep on living, he need to fulfill Mo Xuanyu wish
Mo XuanYu sacrificed his body to bring Wei WuXian back to avenge him against his abusive family 16 years after Wei WuXian’s death.

I was waiting for this reaction! Trust me (and everyone in the comsec), calling The Untamed as masterpiece isn't enough, no words could ever describe how great this drama is. It might be a lil confusing at first but you'll get it later on. This drama was released 5 yrs ago but their fandom is insanely growing every year. I hope you won't drop this huhu. Wei Wuxian (Courtesy name) = Wei Ying (Birth name) = Yiling Patriarch (Tilte, It may also be written as Yiling Laozu)

Bro I totally get them not being as hyped because it's too much to take in at once, but after you get engaged with the story, know all the characters and understand the dynamics of this fantasy world there is no coming back. I watched 50 episodes like it was nothing, and I know people who have watched it multiple times. Just take your time to pick up on everything
They didn't have much budget making this series since the actors weren't also that famous hence why some special effects are cringey because they decided to pay more attention to the costumes and Photoshoping the background nature

This series was the first C-Drama I watched. It's so good.
Just some explanation, Mo Xuanyu brought Wei Wuxian back. Mo Xuanyu was known as a lunatic, so that is why we see him acting crazy to keep his cover. The scars are part of the curse to bring Wei Wuxian back. Wei Wuxian was supposed to get revenge on the Mo family for how badly they treated Mo Xuanyu.
