Allen Collins wrote the music to this when he was only 16...and the phrase "if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me" came from Allen's wife who asked him that while they were driving in the car. Allen is one of the most underrated guitarists ever...actually, the talent of the entire band is underrated! And why Artemis' arms didn't fall off at the end! My fav...a southern girl from Florida! Saw them in Orlando (with several other bands) when I was about 10 with my older brother who passed last year. RIP to all of them that are gone.
You need to show her Knebworth as well because you can see Allen playing better, & he does his solo longer!

I was at the last live performance in Greenville SC. I was friends with the drummer, Artimus Pyle, who was from Spartanburg SC. He survived the crash. Side note: Billy Powell, the piano player, was also a classically trained concert pianist who got interested in southern rock music. The other guys had no idea he played piano. He was acting as a "roadie" for the band when one day Gary and Allen (guitar players) were arguing about how to play a particular riff. Billy sat down at the piano and played it his way and Ronnie added him to the band on the spot.

I've seen a BUNCH of the greats (no brag, just fact) and I promise you NOBODY could whip the crowd into a frenzy quite like Skynyrd! If you were in the company of the right person, you could be the benefactor of all of that energy! Were they the greatest musicians? No.....Greatest material? No.......but they had the "IT FACTOR" in spades! And always 3 raging guitars! This is after Ed King had left and Steve Gaines (and sister Cassie/background vocals) had joined on guitar. Only other band I ever saw that had near the same raw emotion was Wet Willie! Try some "Drippin' Wet" live sometime!

Yes, the version of Freebird from 'One More From The Road' at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta was better. BUT, true story, the guitar work is overdubbed in the studio. There is a story in their biography about Allen Collins and Gary Rossington redoing their guitar work over and over to get it exactly right. Because there is NO video of that performance, we can't hear the raw version of the song.

Duane Allman is credited for the concept of the Southern Rock genre of Music in the 70's. His solo on the cover of "Hey Jude" with Wilson Pickett in 1969 at The Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals AL. (with "The Swampers" session musicians mentioned in Sweet Home Alabama)was the beginning of Southern Rock. Clapton was amazed by it & wanted to know more about this guy called "Skydog Allman". The innovative Bird Tweet sounds at the very end of Derek and the Domino's "Layla" by Duane was his trademark. The Slide intro & bird tweets (at 6:01) of Free Bird are clearly Rossington's tribute to the Late Duane. The concept behind "Free Bird" title/ song is debatable but there is NO Denying the slide part of the song intro by Rossington is a Tribute to Duane.

If I remember right they were the opening band for the Rolling Stones, and they actually got more reaction from the crowd. I watched an interview and Allan Collins who did most of the solo at the end never had any formal training on the guitar. He is a self taught guitarist. It wasn't long after this show (October 22, 1977) was the fatal airplane crash. Took the lives of Ronnie VanZant (lead singer), Steve Gaines (guitarist) he did part of the ending solo with Alan Collins, and Steve Gaines sister Cassie Gaines (back up vocals). Sad day in the rock world.

Minor correction. 1973 is when their first album (which included Freebird) was released, but it was actually written in 1969 or 70.

Kinda eerie seeing him sing those lyrics about leaving tomorrow and being remembered knowing that he died only a couple of months after that performance.

Over 60,000 people. This was a summer show hosted by Bill Graham (that’s the voice you hear at the end saying “One of the great ones”.). The headline act on this day was Peter Frampton. My mother wouldn’t let me go to concerts until a year later because I was only 13 years old. 🤨 Oh, well, a year later I got to see Van Halen’s first tour ( opening for Black Sabbath). 🤘
