Love your tips! My first experience with Yom Kippur was last year and I fasted, not knowing what I was getting into. It was hard but it was so moving that I decided to convert! Happy Yom Kippur! All the best to you and your family. :)

The new year is in the spring. This is detox season, ('flu season'), when your body is cleaning up and getting well, hence the fasting.
We also focus on the spiritual 'detoxing' we need to do.

    TW//eating disorder
This year I am fasting for the first time ever!! I have struggled with a restrictive eating disorder for years and am getting a lot better. I will still probably have to go to school but I will definitely find somewhere to stay during lunch. I will be allowing myself water during the fast since I am still in the process of recovering, but I am going to try my best to fast for the whole 25 hours! Of course if I feel like I'm going to pass out or something then I will unfortunately have to break the fast. I hope the fast goes well for myself and everyone!!

I had an eating disorder for ma y years badly. I am recovered God healed me. God recently spoke to me of the power of prayer & fasting and when I said God, but doesn’t sound good for me? He said fast from social media. Another option God gave in addition was fasting from animal products eating only fruit veggies grains and tons of clean water. God doesn’t recommend to me to go without eating. But the purpose of the fast is to give up pleasure to become closer to God. Give up what is taking up our time. So showering, social media, social nights, movies, tv, can be great modern day fasting options. 💜

Wishing you an easy fast, Marion! Your tips are great. My mother always had our high holidays clothes chosen and ready weeks beforehand -- smart moms definitely think alike! We're looking forward to doing tashlich this weekend and another round of children's services this week -- the shofar is always a highlight for us.

Thank you, you too!! My son is very shofar obsessed at the moment lol but I get it, I hope he's not too disappointed when we go to synagogue for a regular shabbat and there's no shofar!

Shana Tova! I loved these tips. I’m staying at school this year and I have no idea how fasting will go (since I haven’t fasted for Yom Kippur in so long)

Shana Tova! Ok, I'll share... ;) Yom Kippur is not the easiest of the high holidays for me, but the thought of having a fresh start (a spiritual cleanse), makes the holiday more bearable. ...And yes...I sleep a lot as well (is that bad)? :D My years varies - sometimes I do have to eat or drink something as I am anemic which does get bad occasionally (i.e. transfusions), and for some reason I get dehydrated very easily - although I promise I drink a LOT of water, but my consumption of water is usually in the form of ice (my addiction from being anemic). Still, my doctor wants met to have electrolytes daily. That being said, if I am feeling well enough, I will fast...if not then I try to drink/eat enough to get me through the day.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I can definitely relate, there are years that I just can't do it and feel too sick to continue and 100% I try to sleep when I can! Hope you have a shanah tova!

Thank G-D we made it. Let's see. I live across the street from shul, not even a block away. So i'm always the first guy there. Hmm i walk in at 8am, and i leave at 8pm. The Neilah almost killed me for sure. The Chazzan's repetition with the Ark open the entire time killed me.. I almost fainted, and just gave in, finally walked out, and sat down..Oh right after MARRIV. nooooo!!!! I'm done.Gmar Chatima Tovah! Shava Tovah! Good year! Simchas Naches , Parnasa, and good health!

Umm... hydration is critical, that I agree; but loading up on carbs is a bad idea. A big protein meal breaks down much slower than starches and will keep you feeling full longer. Hydration with Gatorade or Powerade would be best, if your diet allows and you don’t have diabetes (of course); because the vitamins and minerals will help you a lot during a fast. Another key thing... reduce your caffeine gradually before the fast begins so you’re done with “withdrawals”.
We should be repentant _all_ the time and not just one day a year. It’s too important to stay in the Tanakh and prayer to HaShem. One thing the Tanakh deals with a lot is the importance of repentance - that means it’s important to HaShem. So, for me, I repent daily and spend time with HaShem by reading Tanakh. Another tip? Proverbs has enough for you to read one portion each day and by 31 days, you’ve finished it. It’s a great cycle to use each month. So much wisdom in Proverbs!!
L’Shanah Tova to you and your family! :)

Jesus taught how to fast. It is written in Matthew 6:16-18. Please read it in the King James version, I think you will be amazed.
