It makes me sad to watch this and realize that if I had good teachers in school, I could have understood this stuff and maybe gone into a career in science or medicine. Dr. Seheult is truly an outstanding teacher, and I’m grateful for the time he spends to make these videos.

Yes! I understand how that feels like. I fall in love with biology because i had good teacher who opened my mind how interesting biology can be. I always wanted to pursue medical since then but end up in engineering due to scholarship. Now, I am currently in my 7th year of my 4 years electrical engineering degree. Hopefully, somewhere somehow in the future I able to work in medical industry with my engineering degree(hope such thing exist)

I sit here and chuckle, as I received an "A' in my undergrad Cell Biology course, because I could memorize "information" and regurgitate it on examines. Problem was I had zero understanding at the beginning and end of the semester. These videos take me back to that class in the fall of 1973. Thanks for lifting the veil, now, as a retired dentist.

Most of what Seheult said was wrong, he failed to mention reverse transcription ( retroviruses ), splicing of introns from messenger RNA ( mRNA ) and ligation of remaining exons, alternative splicing, use of L amino acids rather than D, glycosylation ( sugar modification ) of proteins via protein trafficking. Cleavage of proteins such as pro-insulin into insulin. There are many different mechanisms that viruses have evolved with respect to viral replications for example Ribosomal frameshifting, etc. I am a Molecular Biologist. I recommend Eric Lander MIT lectures on fundamental Molecular Biology.

I was following along and really understanding the process. Connecting some dots between terms tossed around and things I have learned previously. I was feeling, pretty pleased with my grasp of this complex process right up to when we went from transcription to translation. At that point the alphabet soup became more than my gray cells could hold at once. This is among the reasons I am not a molecular biologist but also the reason I keep watching videos like this. I want to understand just for the knowledge of how life works. So I will keep watching until the rest of the lights go on for me.

One comment I heard a while back helped me understand molecular biology a lot better, and it went something like this:
"These structures assemble themselves into the correct shape for their function"
I think this is a key and non-obvious point, that the behavior of proteins is as a direct result of their composition.

The MedCram series provide great summaries. However, there is small glitch in this one. There is no thymine (T) in RNA, as mentioned earlier in the video the T in DNA is replaced by uracil (U) in RNA. This is true for all forms of RNA including mRNA, tRNA and rRNA. I often misspeak in the same way in lecture, but there I have a live audience to correct me.

I wonder if it's possible to request and get such a detailed video explaining prions 😮

This is golden. Thank you. Always wondered where nucular gets around the nuclear so when you set a match to it, it goes boom. Of course the primer cord needs to be a single string ribosome, otherwise it'll just fizzle rather than fissure. Is there going to be a test on this?
Honestly the way you present this, makes me want to delve into this much further. Thank you Doc!

My sister took her son to the Los Angeles Childrens and there are lots of cases with people quarantined at that hospital, 2/26/20 12:00pm. Why are these cases not being reported on the news

Ugh. Brought back some “dental school” nightmares. Didn’t like it then, still not too crazy about it. Thanks doc. (I think). Golgi bodies, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, glycolysis, mitochondria, translate, never thought I’d use those terms again as a dentist.

Wow, I am looking forward to other up coming videos from you that relate to this topic! I really want to know why cells allow viruses to use all its facilities to replicate.

Regarding translation, in the video you said RNA is AUGC. but when you talked about translation you said tRNA will match up with the ribosomes and you ATA with TAT did you mean AUA and UAU? These videos are awesome. Thank you!

Thanks for the refresher course on molecular biology. Many years ago I found it amazing and representative of the power of the universe and how it works on an almost invisible level. Now. with Covid-19 we see the deadly efficiency of how a misdirected biological system can impact not only a cell, an individual but all life.

Dear Dr Seheult, I have heard about Redox Signalling Molecules that I’m “told” are involved in cellular communication [and these molecules kill bacteria AND viruses]. Is the communication process you describe in this video what Redox Signalling Molecules do?
    Thank you
