Victoria is so resilient- I think she was treated the worst in the media. It was all “Posh doesn’t sing,” “Posh never smiles,” doubts about her marriage, her intelligence - everything. She never complained, most of it was lies, she fronted it out and she’s now arguably the most successful in her individual career, has branched out into lots of areas and the marriage and family is still in tact. She deserves more credit. Her autobiography was one of the most enlightening, endearing things I have read.

    • @Mitjitsu
      @Mitjitsu Рік тому +24

What hurt her was she never had a solo in her debut song. Giving the illusion she couldn't sing. Also, being married to someone who was even more famous than her also didn't help. Still, I think she was always going to be the most successful after Spice Girls and probably would have been if nothing ever came of the group.

I think we as fans never made justice to Victoria skills. I remember when that whole thing about singing started to show and how Posh was always the "bad" voice 'cause she never sang the high notes. And nowadays when I hear Spice Girls songs, Victoria's voice is ALL AROUND the songs doing the lower notes, putting all the harmonies together and doing a lot of bridges for the refrains to shine. That elegant voice embracing everything. That's a detail that made this group so special.

"Girls could relate to us, none of us were six foot tall, skinny, gorgeous girls. We were normal looking girls" - Victoria nailed it! It was 80% that! and their positivity, friendship and cartoon-like styles was the perfect recipe that no one ever tried before or after them! They weren't a coreography, they weren't trying to be sexy. They were fun, pretty and their own character! it was the bomb at the time. Of course, I still love them, they can continue getting together for reunions but even today, they, themselves are not even the same. They act different, shy, more reserved...maybe its the age but the point is that their energy mixed with the moment! it'll never be 100% the same.

Their songs and videos instantly take me back to those pre-internet days of my youth. "2 become 1" is always the song that hits hardest though, the nostalgia is almost too much sometimes.

There was no need to make replacements though. They successfully continued touring and making music as a four piece. They finished the tour with "Live at Wembley" which is their greatest show ever, had big #1 hits(Holler, Goodbye, LLLTW), then the Earls Court Show and finally the Platinum album "Forever". After a lengthy hiatus they reunited as a five piece in middle 00's. It was a total different story for the Sugababes, they had no choice. Two members don't make a group, so they had to add a third member. Their problem is that, during the whole history of the group, they made three replacements and eventually all the original members were replaced 😂.

I think the reasons why I was so connected to Posh and Sporty Spice was because they were the "book ends" as Victoria expressed it. As a little kid I often became the book end. And I was content with it (until I was only a doormat). I also loved Victoria's mysterious quietness and often dark clothes and I loved Mel C's tomboyishness and authentic aura. The whole group was special to me tho. I bonded with my sisters and childhood friends through them.

I watched this when it first aired before the reunion tour in '07 and Mel C really stood out for me she was my favourite Spice for her personality and genuine good vibe and even today I feel the same after watching it. Alot of people feel that Geri was bullied out of the group and as a result was the most damaged and that is ok, that is an opinion but here is mine. For me Mel C is the one who battled the most especially post break-up and the one still carrying alot of hurt about the past in this documentary. Her "I dont remember being that person" comment really hit me hard and it shows how much it effected her. She is always so honest with any interviewer but here when touching on the reasons for Geri feeling she had to leave the group Mel seems to be unwilling to engage in a conversation about the lead up to Geri leaving. You can see Mel was so damaged and hurt even up until the reunion tour in 2007 she was always the most vocal about never reuniting and even when approached she was reluctant to do it again. She has put so much work into her recovery it makes you think what really went down amoung them all and what issues they all walked away with from the constant pressure. They where the biggest band in the world at one point and that kind of media attention and fame had to have an impact. Im so glad they all worked past it and got back together for the reunion tours. And whatever the line-up for the future, heres' to another trip to Spice World 👑🤞🏻

Spice Girls were more than just a band. World was changing rapidly in the 1990s, society was changing and started opening up, and they are a representation of that era when the world started waking up in a way if you like. Yes there are many artists out there who have been and are mega famous, and achieved a world-wide success, but nothing ever quite like the Spice Girls. It was a cultural phenomena in every sense of that word. That's why a lot of very young people today can't understand what the fuss was all about. It's very interesting for me to go back now, and see it through the eyes of a person who is well in his 30s. And I think it's interesting for the Girls to reflect on what happened, because back when it was all happening they didn't have the time to sit and think. That's why it's interesting to hear some of them saying how some things are a blur, and not quite clearly remembering what happened.
People in the UK often don't realize what Spice Girls did for the country. I've been living in the UK for a while now, but back then when I wasn't I remember how suddenly Britain became cool, we were wearing T-shirts with the Union Jack on, everybody wanted to go to London...Britain became synonymous with this cultural change. Of course it was always a country alongside USA that traditionally produced the best music, but this went beyond that.
It's interesting to actually realize how they only lasted a couple of years, and yet it seems like they went on for much longer. We're only looking at around 2 years from the release of their first single, to Geri's departure. After that, it was clear that the vibe was going away. The third album could have been a big success, but they all sort of gave up on it one way or another. I love how honest Victoria is about all that.
I understand Geri. When they first started it was clear that she was the most mature, she fought a lot for them, and became an unofficial leader of the band in a way. As the time passed by, other girls started to mature as well, had grown in confidence, and the Mel B "issue" was very important because you can see how she was never really comfortable with Geri being as powerful as she was in a way. She was mad about those nude photos, mad about the Union Jack dress and Geri being on the covers of all the magazines etc. And when you are so close with other people like these guys were, it is inevitable that tensions will appear and grow. They spent almost 24 hours a day together for over 2 years. And of course that Geri started to feel a bit lost because once all the girls built their characters and started to mature she felt like she wasn't needed anymore. Of course, none of that was actually true as far as other girls were concerned, but I can understand why she felt the way she felt at the time. It was all becoming a bit too much to handle, and that's why it's silly when people ask her to name one reason why she left. There is no one reason. As she said, it was just everything. Her departure ultimately made other girls think about everything, and the dissolution of the group was becoming inevitable. Perhaps for the best. Had Geri stayed I'm sure the third album would have been another record-breaking situation for them, but I believe they would ultimately have slowed down, and the same thing would have happened. That's just the way it goes with these things. When a lot of things happen in a very short space of time, and when that is beyond anything anybody could have anticipated, you eventually outgrow that, mature, move on...things change, world changes, they became mothers, married etc. And the best ting about the reunion is to go on tour, share those moments and memories with the fans, and leave it there. The best decision they've ever made, or haven't in a way, is to make more music, because that would be silly. We see a lot of bands trying to cash in on their past fame, and they just make fools of themselves. Spice Girls never did that because they never did anything by force. They acted in a moment, and were smart enough to let go when it was time to let go.

Usually in a pop group, 2/3 of the members are more popular than the others. Like Supremes, BSB, NSync, Destinys Child, etc. But for Spice Girls, each member is memorable, and has own fans.
And most pop groups didnt write their own songs. Spice Girls did writing!
And to this day, globally, they are still the best selling girlgroup ever. Even other 2 huge girlgroups like TLC and Destiny's Child were not as massive.
In US, TLC and Destiny's Child were probably bigger. But Spice Girls is still the biggest non US girlgroup to conquer US.

Who is or who was the industry? Wtf happened to them?all they died? Who manages the industry now? Their sons? Or another people? I mean, today there is only, mostly noise, swearing and using/discarding women as "music". Its maybe a way to protect and keep safe a genre or the real music by creating something different with very poor quality? Sorry to write this to you but u mentioned the industry and theres a lot of questions about it cause nostalgia is here? But for sure the '90s were magical.

I remember when they got together in 2007, I was thrilled and overjoyed. I'm so proud to have been a 90's kid and I got to experience them at their peak. This was a great documentary and that 2007 reunion tour and Greatest Hits album was the perfect ending to their story. They are hands down one of my favorite groups ever and I still listen to them to this day.

What I forgot about the Spice Girls was how universal and dominant they were at that time, how they were setting the bar higher in terms of 90s pop culture, not just in music but in fashion, and make up, and hair styles, and magazines, and toys, and film, and collectibles. They are a time capsule of what the end of the 20th century was, what it felt like to come of age in that period right before Y2K. And you forget how quickly they rose to that fame, and how brightly they burned for what's really a short time frame for a group that had so much power and popularity. Because they were in such high demand, and the hysteria they generated wherever they went, it's no surprise that they burned out in the way that they did. It must have been exhausting to be them, constantly being pulled in every direction, always on the move, always expected to bring that punchy attitude and brash behavior to every meet-and-greet. It's no wonder Geri pulled the plug in the manner she did, because I don't think there was any graceful way of doing it, no way of slowing the runaway train down before bailing out. I can remember being crushed at the announcement that she had left the band, it almost felt like a betrayal to a preteen girl who had been such a fervent fan for three years. Now, as an adult, I can completely sympathize with all of them, because no one could carry on at the pace they were going without doing some serious damage to their well-being. Three years of absolute mania, which in my opinion, has not been eclipsed by any other pop music act since. Yeah, there's the Biebers and T Swifts and K-Pop groups of the industry today, but they are not as all-encompassing, and globally revered as the Spice Girls were at their peak. They appealed to almost everybody of any age, race, or religion, and everyone had their favorite, because they were each unique and identifiable to all girls from all walks of life. I don't we've seen anything like them since Beatlemania, but this was a whole new brand of fanaticism, and one that asserted feminine "big dick energy" that didn't exist in music at that time. These women carved out their own place in the pop culture landscape and inspired a whole new generation of young women to be unapologetic about themselves, being assertive and vocal, all under the Girl Power mantra. Sometimes I feel like we need to be reminded of that, which is why I came back to watch this doc again.

Coming back after reading Mel B's book casts a lot of this in another light and fills in a lot of blanks. On one hand, there was so much more going on than they ever let on. On the other hand, that the sisterhood stayed so strong and was the light that could, one way or another, be found in the darkness is a testament to Girl Power.

  • @4uTender

Best girl band ever! Not only did they give us some memorable dance hits which will be played for generations, but the group also had a personality (something other bands didn't, they were what the creator told them to be or to hide who they were at all). I think that highlighting each girl's personality was that thing that will make this group go down in history. They were just girls like you and me...dancing, having fun and being naughty every now and then, something any girl can relate to. Had they posed like divas as other singers/performers they would not have reached so deep into the fans. We all wanted to have a bit of the baby spice's sweetness, looking slim like Victoria (any human being would feel fat when looking at her, even models!), sexy and daring like ginger, athletic like sporty and feisty like Mel. All of them together made the girl any 90's female dreamed of being. Long live the British queens of pop and may the message of girl power continues to echo in future generations.

I can't count the amount of times I've watched this documentary. Probably about the same amount of times I watched Spice World, and Spice Girls live at Wembley Stadium on VHS when I was a kid. I still love the end the most because their first show of this tour was in Vancouver and I was there, and it was so incredibly emotional. You can see in the background all the Canucks symbols, solidifying that they were here. I take honour in that, and I hope that when the Britain tour is done in 2019 they consider doing a world tour and coming back here.
