Good to see old tactics as well as old tackle - yes we do over complicate things at times
Blade of grass under the hair and a washing up bottle lid for an indicator, classic.. Great stuff
Thank you, need to get hold of a few bottle tops next time
I stopped using bottle top’s after it got coiled up in the first ring n loosing a fish 😾so I changed to a inch of plastic pipe cut at the bottom so I could pull it off the line , started carping with Heron alarms, NO hair rigs so only caught 1/2 the takes coz the hook had to pull all the way through a 1inch par boiled potato!. Crap Rods, started fishing when I was 10 using the Ariel off a Sherman Tank!!, True, crap reels, Crap tackle in general . 72 now still carping, mostly on the river, but not right through the really cold 🥶 winter.
@@streetcat1510 bet you have some good memories of those days, everything’s all a bit serious now! I used to use the top of a bottle with the side cut out sliding on an old brolly spine like a monkey climber. When you got a bite the bottle top shot into the air and normally into the lake!
@@TheFishingBloggersstill use the bottle tops for perch. The sensitivity can't be beat.
@@derekroberts8637 I’ve got some ultra light bobbin I made for perch - basically a mini foam ball with an adjustable clip glued inside with a length of dacron tied to the bankstick
Haha, that took me back to the days of my old mitchel match reel, five in one diawa rod, must admit back in the day barbed hooks were all the rage, well done!
Cheers bud 👍
Ah grasshopper...old skool tactics...fishing with dad back in t'day, as a yout'...strong is the power of Crabtree with this one😅, good vid neph' , 😀 good response, looking forward to spring' oh wha'sa ghostie? C'ya' unca s 🐟🐟🐟👍😎🦀🚂
👍👍
Crackin watch as always loved that one brings back memories usin old school tackle i use to love my close face reel for trotting on the rivers 👌
Always nice to dust it off and see if it’s got some life left in it 👍
Great video. Takes me back to when me and my dad first started fishing together.
That’s awesome 👍
crikey takes me back to when I started, great upload, enjoyed this, many thanks!
No worries, glad you like it 👍
Loved this iv got a pair of 300s and still use them once or twice a year their still going strong
Can’t beat a ‘churner’ 👌
You Sir, literally took me back to the 80's! I even used bottle caps as indicators ))) Happy times!
Happy to help 😂
Brilliant, what a result.
Thank you 🙏
That reel😂 awsome video shaun.. i started carpin early 2000s about 2007using old wychwood stuff there rods etc. also my rig set up was lead with a leadger stop an ready rig😂 still caught carp also used prawns as bait or meat
I’ve caught loads on prawns while perch fishing, great underused bait 🍤
When my dad passed away I inherited all his old fishing gear, shimano match rods, cane rods, centre pins and some mitchell reels, even an old bite alarm with a wire hair that moves when the line is pulled. I look at my gear some 30 years later and wonder if i even need half of it 😂
Great video mate 👍🏻
Hope you get to use your dad’s old gear, it’s a great way to reminisce. We all take way too much kit, I’m always looking to thin it out and keep it simple. The hard part is all the camera gear and batteries!
@@TheFishingBloggers Tell me about it! I scaled down and now literally have 2 iphone 15 pro max’s, both 500gb so i can record hours of HD footage and a tripod to film my sessions, way less batteries and camera equipment. Probably not the best videos but you gotta start somewhere right? Maybe one day i will have my own film crew 😉
@@Uk_carp_diaries you can’t beat SLR quality and the diversity of multiple lenses. I’ve used phone footage to capture moments that would otherwise get missed, but wouldn’t use one solely.
@@TheFishingBloggers Fair do’s, i can’t say Ive tried an SLR camera before, i had a gopro but wasn’t very impressed with it. When i think of all the years i spent catching and not even photographing it still seems weird recording everything nowadays. Look forward to your next video 👍🏻
@@Uk_carp_diaries 👍
when i first started fishing in the late 70's/early 80's my dad had a Mitchell 300 reel and a split cane rod - great memories.
I’ve got an old split cane, but not sure it could handle a fish anymore!
Awesome watch total old school fishing onto the next adventure tightlines look forward to the next video 🎣 👊
Cheers Darwin 👍
In the 80's i used a little ball of ground bait as a bite indicator with an old shool michell 208 reel and a rod that was really heavy and a good ball of ground bait on your hook good old days
That’s probably the best thing about modern tackle, it’s lightweight!
@@TheFishingBloggers absolutely mate 👌
Where would Carp anglers be with out John Wilson, Matt Hayes and Des Taylor on TV back in the day lol . Great video 🎣🎣
Definitely, Matt Hayes and Mic Brown are bring back the Rod Race! 🔥
@@TheFishingBloggers I started n didn’t have a telly, we couldn’t afford one, but when we did there was only one guy on TV who fished and that was ‘Jack Hargreaves’.
@@streetcat1510 Jack is brilliant. There's a few of his old country videos on yt.
I have a flask exactly like yours , it now holds floats 😂😂
😂😂 it’s such a rubbish flask!
Excellent stuff, as you said modern carp fishing is now so serious and over complicated it takes away from the joy of just being outside fishing,
Love a vit of fishing with the old school gear, still does the job just fine
Glad you enjoyed the video! Enjoying the outdoors is definitely what it’s about 👍
I'll have to fish out my Mitchell 300 auto bail and optonic XL, with the glow in the dark snag ears and monkey climber. Proper memories
No such thing as a Mitchell 300 auto bail,a early 330 ,otomatic ,now we are talking ,then there are 440,440a,840 m all auto bails ...
@@adamroots3429 hhmmm maybe your right I'll need.to go look. Maybe confusing it with the Mitchell match. Either that or the Alzheimer's has kicked in
Dust it all off and have a go!
Wanted a mitchel match reel as a kid, it was in the window of local tackle shop, just couldn't stretch the budget at 12 years old lol. About £30 i think early 80s.
Luckily my dad was an angler and gave me his hand me downs! First reels I ever bought myself were the Shimano 6010 bait-runners, still got them now! Dont use them though as they are knackered!
Since I’ve returned to carping after 40 plus years I do miss my old soft fibre glass rods that would bend double
Great fun but in flexing they absorbed power well
The old Mitchell’s sound a little better than your modern reels 😂
The new reels get more use! 😂
Nice one, loved it👍🏻
Good to hear 👍
I emigrated to Canada in 1991 with all my gear. Included four original Optonics and Mitchell 300s. Rods were all carbon fibre. A couple were fibre glass. I still use them apart for one rod which snapped. Was a member of CAA and the Carp Society which allowed me to fish Redmire a couple of times. Waters with 20lb+ fish in were rare and difficult to access unless you knew someone. Somewhat elitist. Looking at UA-cam videos now anyone can break Dick Walker's record. His book and Kevin Nash's were essential reading. Interesting video. Thanks
Carp fishing has changed lots since the 90s! Some for the better and some for the worse…mega fishing in Canada though! I’ve had some mega carp from the St Lawrence to upper 30s! Beautiful part of the world 🌍
Old skool is cooler than new spool! You've got yourself a new sub!
Thanks mate, it’s not old school every week though 😂
@@TheFishingBloggers nor is it with my channel, but I can't stress enough how much more reliable the old kit is.
@@WilliamMuschett those Mitchell’s ain’t very reliable 😂
@@TheFishingBloggers they will be around longer than any new Sonik without discombobulating 🤣
@@TheFishingBloggers I own a set of Shimano Biomaster XTA 8000s and a set of Baitrunner 450 and 650s (the OG grey baitrunners) honestly am amazed by how well they perform considering their age
Great video of old tactics
Thank you, glad to hear you liked it 👍
Great video took me back to my youth
God I wish we had known about wrapping sticks back then
Please tell me the make of your Polaroid wrap round glasses I have been looking for a large pair
Love the vid be lucky
The Polaroids are Fortis, can’t remember what model as I’ve had them a few years now
Great Video, guys
Cheers mate 👍
A Wooden Centrepin & a Dough Bobbin is old school.
For me that would be ancient! 😉
Wicked memories thank you had me remising of my Sealy Carp masters and Mitchell 300 only thing missing was the heron buzzers lol
I’m a bit young for the Herons! 😂
@@TheFishingBloggers lol next was 12’Conoflex with Mitchell 410’s lol great video mate keep umm coming🎣👍🏻
@@keithferguson8719 thanks, glad you liked it 👍
I’ve seen a pic of a lovely orange koi that someone I know caught outta there recently. 👌
Yea there a few koi in there, plenty of ghosties too
Optonics really takes me back, nice little water, looks like shackles lake , great video buddy 👍
It is Shackells 👍
I've just dug mine out the back of the shed. New batteries and still working. Mark 1 delks still going strong too.
@@derekroberts8637 Awesome! Get them on some sticks and get out there and have a few 👍
Vintage tackle 😂😂😂. I pulled up at Loch Ruttan pike fishing in the middle 9f winter. Brolly and a shite sleeping bag. My bite Alarm was the hub cap of the van i was in, placed under the reel with a 2p balanced on the spool...... Mesh bags 😮😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sounds like all the elements for a deep hooked pike that 😳
@TheFishingBloggers Eels all night, one was 6lb though...... Chris Yates is the man with vintage tackle. Seen him put a scarecrow figure out into a lake where big carp where surface feeding offerings he had put in. Tight swim lots of overhanging trees. When carp weren't weary of it he removed the scarecrow, got his chest waders on and stood 8n same spot, he caught s3veral 25lb + carp, back in the 80s
@@paulgwilliam4985 yea he did that on A Passion For Angling!
nice vid ,but come on BACK IN THE DAY 😂 how old are you ,🤣ps. all good fishermen go fishing with dad .
What’s wrong with back in the day? You don’t have to own a bus pass to be able to refer to your youth as back in the day 😂
@@TheFishingBloggers 😂👍
Can you get a barrow across to the lake
It’s more effort than it’s worth in all the mud!
@@TheFishingBloggers Thanks
@@2403harry just take minimal gear like I do, 2 rods, net and a rucksack etc. I’d take even less if I didn’t have the camera gear weighing me down!
Electronic bite indication isn't very Vintage though is it really.
Actually, you are incorrect ,they have been around since the 1950s,initially designed by Richard Walker in his shed,no less...the Sam shed where magnesium reels were made in very limited numbers for BB ,at Beechmere..
The alarms were eventually called Herons, there are another, made in clay country ,Kernow, called Watchman, nothing new under the sun..!
It’s vintage for me!
Hair rigs, braid hook lengths, pva bags, pellets. Very Dick Walker. Sorry but no.
Who mentioned Dick Walker? I was referring to my youth and referenced the 90s. Think you’ve missed the point of the video 😂
