We had the opportunity to consult with Txtur, a Roanoke VA based high end furniture maker for the plywood finish. We selected Osmo PolyX. It is Hardwax-Oil wood finish based on natural vegetable oils and waxes. It is extremely durable and hard wearing - will not crack, flake, or peel, is resistant to water, dirt, and common household spills, is microporous and molecularly bonds with the wood fibres, can be spot repaired and/or renewed with no sanding required, and conforms to strict German and European norms. It is suitable for floors, kitchens, bathrooms, and other rooms exposed to high humidity. It is safe for humans, animals, and plants and is also suitable for children’s toys.

The camper is a true four season with all water tanks, waterlines and gate valves inside the thermal envelope. Also by using a 1.5” composite panel for the walls, roof and floor we have minimized thermal breaks. The windows are also dual paned with integrated blinds and screens.

This has to be some of the best engineering and well planned builds I have ever seen! I’m not a fan of the bare wood look everywhere, but that is probably my only complaint. Everything else is genius. I can definitely appreciate the ingenuity. The pieces that fit together, accessing the same kitchen from inside and outside, having a separate space to eat and cook, thinking of a place to put your pillows, and to hold down your bedding while you’re moving, all of the pull outs. Amazing! It has the features you would expect for an off-road travel trailer, but the additional amenities like a reading light that you would expect in a standard travel trailer

This trailer has some great design features and uses space incredibly well. It's very versatile. I would like to understand the use of the separate water heater and furnace compared to using the Truma Combi Plus? Also, not sure about putting the A/C behind a black panel. This comment is really a "to each their own" comment but I would think you could save some useful weight with strategic use of less wood. At almost 2700 lbs dry and a 3500 lb GVWR, with 350 lbs of water onboard, 20 lbs of propane, you only have 430 lbs left for everything else. Tools, food, clothes, camping gear is going to eat that up in a hurry.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the overall design. Like I said, I think you use limited space fantastically. I understand wood is easily repairable and gives a warmer feel for some. I just think the weight is significant enough to reconsider. Looking forward to continuing to watch your progress.

That kitchen is incredible! Well-thought-out, all that storage and accessibility inside or out. So much room and storage, inside and out, for such a smaller camper. Great use of space. The shower surprised me, pleasantly surprised me. What a great camper. I really like this! I have a question. Can you get the exposed wood painted? It would be a little more esthetically pleasing to me, but it would be fine just the way it is. Also, what is the price range for this? I also like that it is not so huge that as an elderly woman, I wouldn't be intimidated hauling it.

Love the concept of the trailer. Looks awesome. Has everything a small camper needs. My biggest problem is the wood. Wood allows for mold and mildew. The wood framing for the kitchen will warp making the close tolerances ineffective. The table at the end of the kitchen is a great but the wooden tabs will brake real easy causing you to have no more table. Lets not for get about the weight, wood is so much heavier then aluminum. Love the inside lay out. But again to much wood. Great off road capability, plenty of room inside, not to tall but tall enough to stand. Over all love the design just wish there was no wood in the build.

Agreed. Even if treated with oil-based finishes, it's debatable how well it'll hold up after a few bouts of inclement weather, especially that nifty slide out kitchen. Not likely anyone wants to carry an orbital sander and refinishing supplies while overlanding. On the positive side, nice choices were implemented in the setup of the suspension and electronics.

The plywood is finished with Osmo PolyX. We had the opportunity to consult with Txtur, a Roanoke VA based high end furniture maker for the plywood finish. We selected Osmo PolyX because it is a Hardwax-Oil wood finish based on natural vegetable oils and waxes.

A trip to Home Depot will show you plywood isn't cheap.

Why you would choose wood is beyond me. Especially at this price point where other campers are making this stuff out of aluminum.

Way overpriced, for that kind of money it should be all aluminum. should have used kitchen grade plywood if your using plywood and put a proper edge on the plywood, looks like it was a short cut. I thought the weight seemed a bit much for the size but once I saw all the plywood, I see why its way overweight for such a small space. would not pull-on trails to well too heavy and too tall so I don't know why they are calling it an overland style. Other than the suspension it really doesn't qualify as an overlander in my opinion.

We hear ya! And we understand that the Wombat Camper is not for everyone. It works really well for us and the way we like to travel. It will get you further and is lighter than campers similar in size, equipment and features. And yes we do take it on trails, nothing too technical. It is not designed as a rock crawler. We can also unhook it to set up basecamp and go exploring for the day.

@@wombatcamper I am not saying it don't work but when you put it in to overland class there is a whole different expectation, overlanding is to head out and camp where you end up each night, not set up a base camp and come back to camp. The reason I look at other builds is because I am i the process of building a camper myself. the base frame and wall and ceiling frames are all aluminum. the outside sheathing is all aluminum. the only steel is the axel and springs you can drag it rock climbing and its not going to come apart. its 14.5-foot box a little over 6 ft wide. will have two 3/4 beds with 2 drawers under them that are 18 inches wide by 48 inches long, for clothes and bedding storage a dry bath shower sink medicine cabinet and toilet. kitchen with lots of drawers stand up refrigerator freezer, stove, microwave and a deep sink. Two freshwater tanks for a total 55 gallons, a gray water tank and a black water tank. TV stereo with speakers inside and out. heat and ac with dual batteries and 600 watts of solar power. the height is just over 6 ft and the top lifts up so that it is low when pulling. Its weighs 1800 lbs. dry. we do not call it a overlander because we consider it too long and a bit heavy for that title, we call it an off-road camper. and value it around Maby 45 to 50 grand. you did have some unique fetchers in yours, but I would call it an off-road camper not a overlander. and If I were you, I would try to get the cost down you can buy a small air stream for less than your price with all the amenities you offer. seeing what others are doing can help you make yours even better. I am not building mine to sell just personal use .

We hear you on the price. The Wombat Camper J-Series is designed for the severe vibrations encountered while traveling on or off the highway. As a price comparison, the Imperial Outdoors Xplorerv X145 starts at $110K, Kimberley Kamper Kruiser E Class starts at $91K, and the Boreas EOS-12 starts at $80K.
