While I agree the appraised value was "fair" . . . S2000's are still undervalued relative to other 2 seat roadsters. IMO the S2000 is one of the all-time greats.
I’m the second owner of a Silverstone 2004 S2000, all stock with original factory hardtop and 98K. Paid $16,500 for it in July 2012. I absolutely LOVE this car just as much today as the day I got it. Not a daily driver. Garage kept. My other chariot is a 2013 Camaro. That one gets most of the road.
The impact that that the original paint color has on the price of a S2000 can be fairly significant. The Suzuka Blue cars like this one have generally been relative bargains compared to the more rare color combinations. Overall I thought Colin provided a lot of good food for thought, as he usually does in this series.
interesting to see all the OEM purists - I get the appreciation for it being completely stock OEM but at the same time it's his car now - he can enjoy it however he wants. I've got a 2003 Suzuka with ~ 44k miles on it that is nearly finished becoming my vision of 'OEM Plus" that I'd had over a decade ago with my first S2000 - a 2002 Suzuka that I stupidly sold 7 years ago. I still have the original parts in case I wanted to revert to full stock but so far I'm loving driving my younger self's dream as a weekend canyon cruiser. To each their own - I just feel bad seeing these examples that spend their entire lives in garages rather than being driven.

I can tell Conlin is really disappointed when he knew the car is gonna be butchered. He doesn't speak as motivated as before and you can really see that.
Awful color. I skipped 3 good ones because of that Suzuka blue. Mine is Monte Carlo blue and i am not fascinated by this either but still better than Suzuka blue

I own a year 2000, S2000 AP1 stock, in good condition. The new car price window sticker stored in the owners manual says it sold new, in Lakeland Florida, for $39,000 dollars. I think $25,000 to $36,000 are reasonable prices as of 2022. The value of the dollar is probably about 1/2 of what its value was in 2000. I think the S-2000 drives as close to a Ferrari as the average guy can afford.
it's incredible how much they cost in the US where you have the most, half of the total production really. When I bought mine in 2018 the prices were way more crazy in Europe where you really seldom see them (except for the UK where they had the most in Europe and they cost the less worldwide, but yes, some of them are rusty). Now they are probably more expensive in the US. I bought mine with 20k miles (40k km) and I modified it and plan to continue to do so but without butchering it! The car is actually very good as it is if you only use it on the road, if you track it you appreciate the mods. I have Recaro RSG and Ohlins on mine. If you mod it with quality parts there is a good payback! If I hadn't modified it I'd probably have already moved to something else. ciao
I have a 06 laguna blue Pearl with 55k and have all 10 vins I’m doing a OCD restoration with tasteful mods. Nothing that can’t be reversed. But I don’t understand taking a clean car and chopping it up for a race car/track car. Just grab a high mileage S2K and send it. It’s a Honda last forever and reliable. There are plenty of good examples that would be great candidates without dropping 30k to start the build. But to each is own his car his build. They don’t make cars like this anymore raw power drivers car. Not the fastest but you better know what your doing if you wanna have fun with it especially AP1’s
Ugh, I sold my 2002 S2000 and I still regret it. Thing was bone stock, 52k miles. OEM hardtop, side strakes, rear spoiler, front lip. Even had the headrest speakers like this one. Was always going to be the car that I buy next, but prices here in Australia went crazy $50,000US for nice ones, at that point I figured I may as well get a lotus exige for that money. Now I’m not sure if I’ll ever get one as I don’t think they are worth that kind of price.
@@xkimopye Honestly, I think it is? Not sure of the exchange rate right now, but the price given in this video seems awful optimistic. @@dannymac6368 yeah no doubt it is worth that money, but then at that kind of money there are some other damn good cars you can buy as well. Unfortunately most sports cars in Australia are very expensive, usually about double the price of the US or UK Maybe one day, we’ll see.
Personally i don't think their worth the money. Besides the beautiful high revving engine which is the main reason you would get one. Parts availability is now a huge issue with everything being backorder/discontinued. Most of these parts are s2k specific and don't share with other models. It’s a shame anyone would modify this beautiful car, l had the honor of owning one and it was a blast if I ever modified mine l would have left it looking stock.
There's no stereo speakers in the headrest on the 2004 models for the S2000. That came later on in I think the 2006 or 2007. Someone correct me if I am wrong. That 'black mesh' in the headrest is just that... a plastic mesh
I noticed that too. Appears bumper was repainted. Appraiser mentioned that. But its still original bumper, so it couldn't have been much damage. Its difficult to get a good match to steel (or aluminum, as this hood is) with a metallic paint on plastic bumper. But it can be done. My guess is outside in sun the match looks good. But the studio lighting brings out differences you normally wouldn't see.
Yeah that's not the car to use for making a race car. There are other examples that would be far better candidates. It may be his dog in his yard, but it doesn't mean that that idea isn't totally ignorant.
Anyone else watch this and cringe at no blue OEM oil filter? BTW, this is literally the identical twin sister from my s2000 a couple years ago. 80k miles, suzuka blue, 2004. In fact, I had to pause it on a close up shot in the engine bay to compare the paint scratches on the valve cover to make sure it wasn't mine.
I would disagree. Paint fades differently on plastic than metal and it spent 18 years in California sun. You can notice the same fading issue on 2000s Renaults
While I love the car, good luck on finding one that hasn't been rodded to near death. ;) I wouldn't pay as much as many ask for that very reason. Same goes for WRX's in general. That said, it is a great car with a fantastic engine.
Wow. I didn’t know they were worth that much used. I have a 00 with 52k miles. Bought new and then left it in the garage when I deployed and never really got back into it. If it wasn’t for my 7 year old who loves the car in Gran Turismo I would have sold it already.
I worked for a Honda dealer for a couple of years, when the AP2s were out, and got to drive one, and an AP1. The sound of that engine at 10K RPM is something I hope I never forget! A masterpiece! ❤❤❤
Uhhh but S2000s did depreciate, they depreciated for many years, for a long time you could get a decent one in the teens and a great one in the 20s, then they went back up. Not to mention Hagerty didn't catch on to the original values of these. From a financial sense I didn't especially guess these would rocket up either, but indirectly this is one of those "cars I really liked" and 90% of those have become collectibles in the last 20 years.
$30k is about right, slightly on the high side but that’s what you pay for a clean version. The thing people should know is that conditions and miles don’t make a huge price difference anymore, go up to 34-35k and you can maybe find a 30-40k miles mint condition one. A 120-150k miles example will still run you 25-26k
@@z32luvr I had a clean '02 that I bought in 2013 w/47k for $13,000 and sold in 2016 w/70k for $13,900. Appreciating in recent years =/= never depreciated.
Can't believe that he's going to turn it into a race car, there's something wrong with the colour of the front bumper, it looks faded or resprayed, Rj in Oz
Actually, you can still 'butcher' it, without 'butcher'ing it. Keep everything original, including bolts and pins, then do the cookie cutter 200k-300k modification. Dry carbon every panel and doors, acryllic windows, crate blue printed engine, stroker kit, high angle cams, forged crank, titanium connecting rods, standalone ECU, remap, racing sequential with dog box, AP racing calipers, 2 piece rotors, steel brakelines, he can put KW suspension of whichever model, aftermarket anti roll bar, bigger radiator, bigger oil and transmission cooler, blanks for lights, single Recaro podium seat, all panels and bolts removed and gauges replaced with aftermarket ones, and so on and so on. Basically you will be using the chassis and subframe of the car, maybe 'butcher' the sound deadening, but all the rest will be nicely kept and labeled, and kept in mint condition.
Lol nobody who goes racing puts that much $ into an s2000. That's a show car you're describing, there is value in using parts the can be readily found. If somebody has hundreds of thousands to spend most likely they are not racing an s2k. I love my s2k but honestly once you've driven in a higher class you don't look back.
@@TheChannel1978 Actually there are hillclimb cars and cars like the ASM s2k but yes, it's usually done by teams or shops. Anyways my emphasis was not on the cost, as you don't need blueprinted block nor dry carbon panels, nor racing sequentials, performance upgrade can still be done in value, and my point was that most original parts can be kept while having replacement parts for modding in order to preserve the entire car and not butchering it. And yes, once you move to two seat kit cars, then to single seaters, then there is no looking back, for regular tracking, least wear and tear, max speed for the same money.
They actually never had headrest speakers from the factory. In 2006 Honda started adding speakers to the roll bars behind the headrest, one on each side of your head. I can tell you from experience, they don’t do much 😅

Paid $16,500 for it in July 2012. I absolutely LOVE this car just as much today as the day I got it. Not a daily driver. Garage kept. My other chariot is a 2013 Camaro. That one gets most of the road.
I would keep it original, its very clean
The impact that that the original paint color has on the price of a S2000 can be fairly significant. The Suzuka Blue cars like this one have generally been relative bargains compared to the more rare color combinations. Overall I thought Colin provided a lot of good food for thought, as he usually does in this series.
Grand prix white has a premium to them, specially the 04 and 05 with tan interiors.
Who's garage is this? All that cycling memorabilia is impressive. Oh, yeah.. The S2k is beautiful as well.
Only a few US riders wore the rainbow stripes. I don't think any Americans rode for Rabobank and Tinkoff. I want to know too.
Love the appraisal videos.
That paint is in ridiculously good condition GOODNESS
The mismatch paint of the front and rear bumper is bothering the crap out of me.
interesting to see all the OEM purists - I get the appreciation for it being completely stock OEM but at the same time it's his car now - he can enjoy it however he wants.
I’d pay 50k for how clean this is. You cannot find another s2k that’s this clean for sale.
Yes you can specially for 50k..
My dad has a 2005 Suzuka blue with optional blue top and less than 20k. It still smells new. It is unmodified and dealer maintained
God bless your dad and the car! Hope he takes good care of it and it ends up in your hands
@@kevinmejia8082 it is garage kept and has never seen rain or a wet road. He applies Shinitsu grease on the weather strip and gaskets once a year. It is very well taken care of. I believe with the color, option combo and mileage it might be a unicorn.
sell it to me
Timeless design
They'll have to pry mine from my cold dead body
The guys that need to be on an S2000 video are Jason Cammisa and Randy Pobst.
Can't help but notice all the frames cycling jerseys on the wall- who's the bike fanatic?
Haha I noticed too!
I was a bit sad to hear this car getting modded at first but then it does have 80k miles. Owner might as well enjoy it the way he sees fit. Crazy I sold mine two years ago same color same year for $16k…mine had 78k miles
If this was an "American" car we wouldn't be having this conversation
Love these. Always learn something. Great delivery on the bad news btw! Colin must know the Dale Carnegie rule of thumb! Kill ‘em with kindness 1st then deliver the blow! Haaa! Great series Hagerty! Home run
I love how much people would just sell it after this. My man is about to get dirty
I had a 2003 silver with black top one that had an exhaust, intake and had been lowered a bit. I did really enjoy it but looking back I would have rather had a very clean stock like this one. My first car was an RX-7 which I miss as well, they were two cars you don't see on the road anymore.
S2000 VTEC MY LOVELY HONDA EVER MADE
I can tell Conlin is really disappointed when he knew the car is gonna be butchered. He doesn't speak as motivated as before and you can really see that.
'Butcher' is an accurate term for modding an original S2000. Modding one is about like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa!
One of my main dream cars, THE EXACt COLOR AND IntERIOR ALSO!!!!!!
FFS NO! DON"T TOUCH IT!!! DON"T LET THEM MODIFY IT PLEASE!!!!!
Awful color. I skipped 3 good ones because of that Suzuka blue. Mine is Monte Carlo blue and i am not fascinated by this either but still better than Suzuka blue
@@endless_touge Laguna blue, Rio Yellow, that racing red or smth and Suzuka blue are the best imo
Like do you even have a concept of a roadster/GT in your mind? How can you don't like that. And don't get me started on that... 3 Mints with THE color?! Insane.
Still it's a great privilege to be owner of a S2000, so congrats man, but RHD cars are dealbreakers for me.
Man, that really used to be someones baby, everything perfect and in place after 80k miles!
Such a shame...
Chris the dip stick
Good job, really a in-depth guide for S2000~
it's incredible how much they cost in the US where you have the most, half of the total production really. If I hadn't modified it I'd probably have already moved to something else. ciao
Beautiful car
Grat car I wish the owner keep it original in its condition.
That is such a clean s2000 i wouldn't even modify it looks great as it is
I have a 06 laguna blue Pearl with 55k and have all 10 vins I’m doing a OCD restoration with tasteful mods.
Was going to get a CR hard tonneau and the VGS steering wheel from Japan but…I also wanted my first 911. Only car I ever regret selling.
New owner got hit while parked 3 weeks later. 🥺😭
Know it’s tough to think about dropping ~$35k USD on one, but if it’s showroom floor-condition, you can rest assured knowing it’ll only be worth more, should the need to sell it arise.
Everyone that sells theirs regrets it.
Everyone that sells theirs regrets it.
@@dannymac6368 yeah no doubt it is worth that money, but then at that kind of money there are some other damn good cars you can buy as well.
Unfortunately most sports cars in Australia are very expensive, usually about double the price of the US or UK
Maybe one day, we’ll see.
nice chopard watch! big fan of those!
im amazed to see the original cover for the cd player lol
WOW, 30000, did not expect that number. Buy a boxster for 10000 and keep S2000 stock.
You could hear the literal pain in his voice the whole episode.
Excellent...my S2000 just got a whee bit more valuable...keep "butchering" them!
Anyway I could get into contact with the current owner? I'd love to buy it from him and save it from being modified.
He works for KW, you should be able to figure it out.
I'm sure you'd have to pay more that the 30 he paid, plus tax for it to be worth it for him to start over his search and find another clean car
Prices on these have went up are these worth purchasing in 2022??
Personally i don't think their worth the money. Besides the beautiful high revving engine which is the main reason you would get one. Parts availability is now a huge issue with everything being backorder/discontinued. Most of these parts are s2k specific and don't share with other models. The car is 15+ years old and will need stuff like rubber seals, etc. I can't see the value going any higher than it is (though i might be wrong) when a new BRZ or Miata is worth about the same
@@wesd991 I’m not a two seater fan so Miata and brz out of the question. I like hatches or 4 door but yeah s2000 just for the engine is a start lol I’m looking either Fiesta ST, EP3 Civic,Mazdaspeed 3, 350/370z I would like something fun
It is worth WHATEVER the buyer is willing to pay for it
I bought my silver 2005 s2000 with 163k miles 9 out of 10 vins present, front bumper was resprayed once but still the original bumper, one adult owner in january 2019 for $8700.. I spent so many nights detailing the interior engine bay to perfection, exterior 3 step paint correction… spent a little over $2000 in oem parts (when they were available).. almost three years It has 164400 miles and runs prefectly fine.. there is nothing like keeping original..
1k miles in 3 years, at the mileage the car has is not going to lose any more value if you drive it.. enjoy it.
Nice work 👍
It’s a shame anyone would modify this beautiful car, l had the honor of owning one and it was a blast if I ever modified mine l would have left it looking stock.
There's no stereo speakers in the headrest on the 2004 models for the S2000. That came later on in I think the 2006 or 2007. Someone correct me if I am wrong. That 'black mesh' in the headrest is just that... a plastic mesh
also thats a $150 service manual in this market for some reason even though it can be found online free
Is it normal for the bumpers to be a different shade of blue than the rest of the car? Have they been repainted?
I noticed that too. Appears bumper was repainted. Appraiser mentioned that. But its still original bumper, so it couldn't have been much damage.
Its difficult to get a good match to steel (or aluminum, as this hood is) with a metallic paint on plastic bumper. But it can be done.
My guess is outside in sun the match looks good. But the studio lighting brings out differences you normally wouldn't see.
My brother-in-law owns 24 of them. On my advice my sister got him to buy them up about 10 years ago.😁
What’s with the weird stitched in steering wheel cover? Looks aftermarket
Yeah that's not the car to use for making a race car. There are other examples that would be far better candidates. It may be his dog in his yard, but it doesn't mean that that idea isn't totally ignorant.
Idec anyway, I'm an old school GM guy, but chopping / modifying a survivor like this is NEVER a good idea.
I remember I bought my s2k notice how slow it was so I turbo charged it after 4months lol
Now I love the car haha
Anyone else watch this and cringe at no blue OEM oil filter? BTW, this is literally the identical twin sister from my s2000 a couple years ago. 80k miles, suzuka blue, 2004. In fact, I had to pause it on a close up shot in the engine bay to compare the paint scratches on the valve cover to make sure it wasn't mine.
Also the green interstate battery
This guy paid 30…crap ones are 20 you can’t blame him!
You can tell the front bumper has been re-sprayed also kinda the rear bumper
I would disagree. Paint fades differently on plastic than metal and it spent 18 years in California sun. You can notice the same fading issue on 2000s Renaults
It looks way too good to modify. I'd leave it as is and enjoy it as it was meant to be.
They rev to 9k.
Bumper looks repainted?
$30k is about right, slightly on the high side but that’s what you pay for a clean version. The thing people should know is that conditions and miles don’t make a huge price difference anymore, go up to 34-35k and you can maybe find a 30-40k miles mint condition one. A 120-150k miles example will still run you 25-26k
I agree with everything you said except the last sentence lol. With that mileage, maybe $20-25k.
Hey Honda, How about a re-release of the S2000?
@The Epsilon Program exactly. History has proven they always mess it up and make it worse thanks to bean counters like the crz and new Integra
@Jimmy Two Times people buy Miata’s so……..
Titled "The Car That NEVER Depreciated" - gives value that's $10k less than new after a huge uptick in values the past few years...
It does have 80k miles.
@@z32luvr I had a clean '02 that I bought in 2013 w/47k for $13,000 and sold in 2016 w/70k for $13,900. Appreciating in recent years =/= never depreciated.
Might not hear much out of those stereo speakers in the headrests…
My 86 CRX had that exact same door chime lol
LS swap it! Heck yeah!
I have a near stock 06 AP2 in great condition, clean title and only 44k miles... wonder what I can get for it now
If you really owned one, you'd know the value of it.
$35k to $50k.
Depends on the color and shape but between 26-35k.
I’d say around 28k.
Low to mid-30's... even into the 40's if its a desirable color combo.
7:17 possibly bumper repaint? Doesn’t quite match the rest.
Can't believe that he's going to turn it into a race car, there's something wrong with the colour of the front bumper, it looks faded or resprayed, Rj in Oz
A normal S2000 this clean is good enough. It didn't need to be sacrificed but ok...
I like the headrest speakers ala '84 Pontiac Fiero.
They actually never had headrest speakers from the factory. In 2006 Honda started adding speakers to the roll bars behind the headrest, one on each side of your head. I can tell you from experience, they don’t do much 😅
Gorgeous. I hate that he’s gonna modify it. Just enjoy it for what it is: balanced and a product of a lost era. Plenty of junkyard civics you could breathe life into; why ruin a classic??
Exactly. They're only original once.
personal preference. i've not touched a single car i've owned and now I think back about the missed opportunities...
@@STRmw2 i mean that’s fair but this isn’t a Miata or brz; it’s limited run and fewer and fewer examples of it exist. Feels more like a waste than a missed opportunity.
@@Eldaino999 I was thinking the same until I saw the mileage tbh, 80k in the UK is on the higher side and s2000’s with that mileage aren’t too rare
@@Eldaino999 I did want to buy a low mileage 20k, black with brown leather interior s2000 about a year ago but it was pretty much at a 80% price premium at the time
cant not notice how all the plastic parts are different colors from the rest of the body
I guess it DID depreciate, but being 20 years old now, it returned to original price, but now in depreciated dollars.
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!!
That 2004 model doesn't have rollbar speakers. +06 models does. That plastic cover is the tonneau cover, not boot cover.
I had a 2006 and my headrest did not have speakers.
To be pedantic, none of them had headrest speakers. The speakers were integrated into the rollbar.
@@hellatightdude you're right, I meant the rollbar. But it's barely loud enough to even notice.

I don't recall S2Ks ever being that affordable that wasn't a busted heap.
@@ekscalybur They were LOW back in 2010, but have been creeping up steadily for years and then they went way up during the pandemic (just like so many other enthusiast cars). I bought a 2004 S2000 in 2009 for $13k USD, which was $13k CAD at the time. Now that car would be about $35k CAD, which is some damn good appreciation, but putting that same money into an S&P 500 index fund would have yielded better returns without any running costs.
