The average margin of victory for the celtics in this series was 4.5 points. It's not like they were the far superior team just blowing them off the floor. KD didn't have to put together the greatest performance of his life, he just needed to be not awful and maybe they win the series. They definitely don't get swept if he plays a few decent games.

Kevin Durant cant move super fast anymore. He has gained weight and also his injuries.
His footwork is not as good too because of that.
Celtics knew it and exploited it very good. They even stopped him with undersize defenders at 3 arc. He did not want to shoot 3s much and could not get past his defender.
He used to have elite speed. Now its average.
As for Tatum he is a better defender than KD and a better rebounder and can move better. But is more streaky than KD.

I feel mostly the same. To spectators it always feel like the best player on the winning team played better than the best player on the losing team because by definition, one did enough to win and one didn't. That's why it's never remembered if a star had a subpar series that the team won in. Always try to think what if the 2 stars switched teams and in this case what if Tatum was defended by the Celtics team defense and KD by the Nets. Now i give Tatum credit for playing good individual defense on KD and give Tatum more credit than saying he's far worse than KD and would average 12ppg.. but overall you're spot on. And I say this as someone who isn't biased for KD at all, I said the same thing when people said KD outplayed LeBron in the finals, people somehow debate this but KD in that situation had way better teammates and was facing a weaker defense than LeBron.

I just wanted to respond to the conclusion.
It''s realy important that you brought up the comment of KD from few years ago because it show who, i think, he realy is.
I view KD as a basketball savant : he's trying to reach summums and test different things.
For instance, to me, him joining the warriors wasn't just about championships, it was about game philosophy and performance.
He thrived there and maybe he wanted to try that ISO way a little more.
To be fair it kinda worked because open shots were created (of the double), but they weren't knocked.
And honestly, if you think about a one man offense...you think about KD first.
So even tho i would've loved to see him 3 peat with the warriors, seeing him take the challenge of testing abusivly the "one man offense" scheme is a joy ( last year series against MIL was a masterpiece ).
I hope that the nets will come stronger netx year.

KD had way too many turnovers for you to say this "wasn't his fault". It's not just the missed jumpers.
Also, getting doubled isn't an excuse. If you know the double team is coming, you've gotta be ready to set up teammates for open 3s and cuts to the basket. KD is just too "scorecentric". LBJ and Luka eat double teams for breakfast. KD is a good passer but simply not on that level of bball IQ to be able to facilitate his way out of double teams. Even Giannis breaks double teams better than KD. The main takeaway from the series for me is that KD can't adjust his game when a team takes away his jumper. He has a frail build and can't dominate the paint either. His defense is still solid. Bottom line, KD has never been the best player in the game. Tatum is better than KD too. That was my opinion even before the playoffs started. Tatum is a stronger finisher, a better 3 pt shooter (Tatum shot 41% on 9 3PA per game post all star break), a way better defender than KD, and Tatum has become a great facilitator (Tatum is averaging more asts than Joker, Giannis, Steph, KD, Kyrie, and Luka in the playoffs so far). Tatum is a complete player and he will dominate the rest of the playoffs and bring Boston a championship. Lebron is the only player better than Tatum IMO.
