The iron butt challenge is actually comprised of different rides and rules. It is all across the 🌎. I completed my ride on a 06 hayabusa. Speeding is NOT allowed. Thats also purpose or reciepts and pictures. The officials use time stamps, location and milage to calculate everything. I also had 4 buddies all with different bikes. We stopped roughly every 100 miles for fuel and quick stretch then back at it. It was great time.

Stash your gear on the fender to make some back support, and carry at least two 1gal gas cans (if you have the peanut tank like I did). Get a new LED headlight, and ride at night - its much more tolerable (just watch for deer).

As an IBA member, I must say that is a respectful story, and I'm very thanksful to you and VINwiki.
    1. Its ironic that the BMW had Russell Day Long seats on it. Those are the seats you want for multi thousand mile trips.
    2. Goldwing vs. BMW is a point of contention
    3. Why secondary roads on an Butt Burner?
    4. We all appreciate the mention of a IBA pitstop (on the side of the road)
    5. The loop on the end of your BB is difficult to prove. Is that why you didn't send them in?
    6. I laughed about you sleeping at your friends house in the middle of a butt burner. Those only go 16 hours.
As a reminder; It is 4 hours per 250 miles; 40 mins on bike, 20 mins rest per hour @ 65mph average

In the 80's I did 6 of these, with my son on the back. I did it to raise money for the AMA (American Motorcycle Association). I got people to pledge a penny a mile for whatever I rode in 24 hours, and if I did not make at least 1000 they owed nothing (I did 1126),. On one of the 1000-in-one's, my son was getting very sleepy late in the trip with over 400+ miles to go. I happened to meet a truck driver who was heading my way. He offered tp let my son ride in his cab from St. Louis to some truck stop in Ohio. We took off and I chased the truck the entire way.

In New Zealand this is called the "Grand Challenge", and is run every October by the Rusty Nuts motorcycle club. Their motto is "Chrome don't get you home".
    I completed the 1,000 miles on a CBR250RR, in ~20 hours.
The CBR basically has a handkerchief for a seat ... your Goldwing in comparison must have been luxury.

Great story!!! Did 2 Ironbutts on Harley Road Glides, both straight through 1000+ miles. The most interesting and hardest was Waco Tx to Valdosta GA on Hwy 84 all the way across. Got lost in Dothan at midnight. Took 18hrs total going through all those small town and back roads.

On a touring motorcycle like the Goldwing or the K1600, the Iron Butt is stupid easy.

I’ll say this, 1000 miles on a bike is hard. I’ve taken a lot of road trips on a couple different bikes. I split up Tampa to tail of dragon in 2 days and that’s 550 miles. Once we were there we probably did 200 miles a day and then we road back home after a week. So after 7 days 3.5k miles later, I couldn’t walk when I got home.

I came back from a 3500 mile trip doing 650 my last day. The next day I did a 250 mile scouting run for an upcoming club run. I would ride every day if I could.

I did my Saddle Sore from Norhtwest Ohio to Robbinsville through ToD and back in about 15hrs on an FJR1300. Was up for a total of 28hrs because I worked a full shift Friday Night then rode 40 Minutes to Toledo for the Official Start Saturday morning. I did a lot of stand up riding on I-75 on the way back because my knees were just screaming at me.

I just did 1000 miles in a bit over 14 hours in one day. I was in a nice car, with music, ac, and a stuffed bear to talk to for when things get weird as you get more tired. I can't imagine on a motorcycle.

From Tucson AZ down to Miami fl.

I left North Carolina on Friday morning, stopped at my dad's place in Oklahoma Saturday afternoon, left on Sunday morning and was in California Monday night on a KLR650. I have about 15 Saddle Sore 1000's and an Iron Butt is 1500 miles in 36 hours. Not too hard to do. No one sends in their documentation as it's a bigger pain than the ride

Cool to see and also very intrigued about how long the iron butt list has been running.
In the early 2000’s I filmed for the 15 th & 20th ( if my memory serves) running of a similar event - 1000 miles, 24 hours on an organised route with manned checkpoints in New Zealand.
With a good number of people running and completing the 1000 in around 20 hours straight.
Routes were planned new for each year with gas station distances & closing times figured into the plan. Fitting in 10000 miles of road in NZ is guitar a challenge in itself - without major doubling up.

I'm an IBA member. 1,000 miles in 24 hours isn't hard. Practically any mechanically sound bike can do it. The hard part is just staying on the bike. Stop getting off to stretch or walk around or get a bite to eat, etc. Just get on the bike and ride until it's done.
Also, there's far more to the IBA than just the small 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Not long ago, I got finished with a 20 day, 12,000 mile ride around the country.

I tried the Iron Butt twice. Hardest part for me was finding a good route. I failed the first attempt due to losing a rear tire at around ~600 miles, finding a tire ended up taking almost an entire day. Second attempt was ended by horrible thunder storms that popped up. I did finish the 1000 miles, but it took ~30 hours having had to wait out the weather.
It was fun to try and I'll give it a go again I'm sure.

I've done just shy of 1000 miles in about 16 hours on a stock 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 650 with paniers, tank bag, tail bag and no cruise control (I did have a throttle lock at least). Slightly painful ride but still fun as hell.

I've rode between Cleveland OH to Dickinson ND three times. 12-1300 miles on my Ninja zx6r. Did it in 22 hrs, 18.5, and 26 hrs. 26 was with a 3 hour hotel stop. Never knew there was a list and certifiable record though. It is definitely painful, couldn't imagine it on a big bike.
