    No mater how i look at it courses at the west are light and more practical. In my first year i had to go though:
    Term1:
    1. Introduction to CS
    2. Digital Logic
    3. Calculus
    4. Programming with C
    5. Physics
    Term2:
    1. Statistic and probability
    2. Microprocessor
    3. OOP with C++
    4. Discrete structure
    5. Linear Algebra

      That's interesting to hear! This is a list of the modules we did for comparison:
      Term 1:
      1. Engineering challenges with EEE
      2. Design and professional skills (Python, Ethics)
      3. Principles of programming (C, Haskell)
      4. Discrete maths
      Term 2:
      1. Object oriented programming (Java)
      2. Algorithms and data structures (Python)
      3. Theory of computation
      4. Maths and statistics

      The course in my uni seems to be the strangest
      Term 1:
      1. Programming Fundamentals (basically C programming)
      2. Computer Organization and Architecture
      3. Introduction to computing
      4. Mathematics for Engineering
      Term 2:
      1. Computer Networking
      2. Operating Systems
      3. Object Oriented Programming
      4. Discrete Mathematics

    Haskell isn't used much in the real world, it's more like one of those esoteric languages that really shows how good functional programming can be with monads etc, but then other languages make those features more accessible

      It's difficult for me to say, as I started programming a few years before uni. Some of my friends hadn't done any programming before, but if you're dedicated you can pick it up pretty quickly! You will probably have to learn from other sources too, like UA-cam and codecademy, cause sometimes a concept might not "click" for you in a lesson. You can do it!

    I dont know much about UCLs undergrad compscience until I saw this video, (great video btw). But as a postgrad, I strongly deter anyone from taking the Finance degrees in Compscience. The structure is very poor, and the teaching is even more messy. Although the professors are highly qualified, their pedagogical skills are left wanting; if you truly want to learn something rather than just achieve some prestige from the degree offered, I highly recommend you search elsewhere.

      Hey there! I think it is possible - you just need to have good time management and be committed. I wouldn't suggest doing a really intensive part time job though, maybe look into tutoring which is flexible and remote, and also jobs around your uni campus. You will probably have to sacrifice going out with friends sometimes, so it's all down to your goals. You got this!

    What A levels did you take and what grades did you get? Do you have any advice on getting in? I’m in year12 rn

    • @zafaris
      @zafaris  2 роки тому +8

      Hey Oliver! This might be a bit of a long reply 😅
      At A levels, I took Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and I managed to get 4 A*s. For UCL CS, Maths is required and Further Maths is recommended. The other 1/2 subjects could be anything really. I guess Physics or CS are pretty good ones to take, and Chem was completely irrelevant.
      If you are applying for Computer Science, I would suggest you start learning programming now, as it will help you tremendously. Also there are loads of great free online resources to learn coding (eg. CS50, UA-cam, Codecademy, Freecodecamp). Once you get more familiar with coding, I would highly recommend you start building your own personal projects. They don't have to be huge or amazing, but this way you'll have a head start and can start building up a GitHub portfolio.
      At the end of the day, UCL is going to look at your A level grades and your Personal Statement. Aim for the highest A level grades you can achieve, but that's only the first step! All the stuff I've mentioned before, you can add to your personal statement, as well as anything else you've done in the past. Ask your teachers for help with your personal statement, to make it the best that you can.
      Finally, I would suggest joining the r/sixthform discord and other similar channels related to computer science and UCL, so that you can connect with like-minded people and ask them for guidance as well.
      Please reply if you have any more questions and I will try my best to answer them. Hope this helps!
      Imaad :)

      @zafaris  2 роки тому

      Hey Sahana! I had the same problem before and I would have a hard time remembering the whole script. What I would suggest is: write up your script on your phone/laptop and then record small sections at a time. Remember, if you mess up one section, you can always record it again! Also, I use bullet points for my script instead of writing out each word. Hope this helps! 😁

      Hey Ruchika, I know a few people in my year group who didn't do A Level Further Maths. Just make sure you get that A* in normal maths. Also you'll have to put in a little bit more work than those who did it so that you can catch up

      First of all, that's quite a big achievement so well done! From what I can see online, you should still add your AS grade to your UCAS application, as it is a qualification. I would definitely recommend that you ask your teachers, cause they will probs know more than me haha.
