37 year old dad. Daughter is getting into Bmx and I usually ride mtb. Sold it and got a Bmx to ride around with her. What a learning curve! From a 29er to a Bmx.. Bike I bought doesn’t have brakes, and it’s SOOOO weird after having a mtb for 30 years! Ordered a brake yesterday. This video was very helpful, and I’ll be checking out your tension videos as well. Any tips for an older guy getting into it? Looking forward to my new journey in the Bmx world! Thanks again!
Heck yea man welcome back to BMX! I would suggest just riding around and getting as comfortable as possible on the bike. Being comfortable will get you out of crashes much smoother than being extremely stiff will.
Thank you for your video. I was given an BMX bicycle, where the brake lever is seized, no way to move it. What is the process to overhaul and process to get it working once again. Hope to hear from you soon.
Just finished mounting a back wheel side pull brake (Odessey 1999) on a bike I just bought off my friend. Damn thing had no brakes, and none of those tiny circular thingys under the frame that would hold the brake line, yet it has the drill holes at the end of the frame where a back brake would be. What the hell is up with that!? I don't get why they would include an accessory outlet for back brakes, and leave out the brake cable holders. 🤔 Well thank goodness for zip-ties I tell you. They did the job quite perfectly 👌 P.s The whole process, from start to finish, mounting that damn back brake was bloody hell for me. I should have watched your video instead of struggling through on my own. Good shit here yo
@@Brant_Moore Right on! Hell ya, ima look into that if the break I put on faults out, or fuckz up from my own wrong doings of "not really knowing what the hell is was doing labor". 👌
Great video for breaks overall, but I am having trouble putting the actual HANDGRIP portion of the breaks back together. Inside the actual hand piece of the breaks is a little spring w/2 little spacer pieces, which I cannot seem to figure out how to properly set up so the hand break springs back after break application.
Most brake levers don’t have a spring and rely on the springs of the brakes themselves to pull the lever back. So I’m not entirely sure how to help here unfortunately
The other day when I installed the Springfield brakes I ran into a problem I never encountered before. I've put some bmx bikes together before but my area of expertise is mainly road and mtbs. The thing is that the brake legs are kind of short and the ghost pads don't pivot. Because of this, when you apply the brake, the pads miss the rim for about 1/16 of an inch and hit the tire. I solved this by installing a different set of pivoting pads but I wanted to try the ghosts. Question is, do you guys slam the wheel all the way inside? That way it would fit but I can't remove two more links on this chain or it'll be super tight. Maybe getting a half link one would help.
I can’t get a 100% clear picture though words but it sounds like you just need to loosen the brake pads and align them with the rim with pressure on the arm so you can get a better idea of where they need to be.
That's the point of Ghost Pads. Only a fraction of the pad is gonna be your main braking force no matter what. So the concept here is why fuss with specific brake pad angles when as soon as you tighten the pad it's gonna move. So Odyssey is counting on their compound to be sticky enough with less time spent on the details. They work. Just line it up so it hits your rim and not your tire, and if you can't reach the rim, try a half link in your chain. Once the distances are set up, that's it. It eliminates fussing with angles. They'll work great, just try it.
I just got in to bmx bike and i took off the brakes and i want to put them back but one brake keeps going towards the wheel no matter what spring i use
I have some hombre u brakes I want to put on my 24" cruzer and I will put them on and the arms hit the seat tube even with the big spacer in the inside of the brake pad is there a fix for this please?
1:07 I remember on my fit dehart frame the break lugs worked loose after a while making my break wobble, and some surface rust in there didn't help so i had to redo my break, so i got some Mafco nutlock on the lugs to stop them moving, grease the out side of the lugs and inside the break arms
Always check mounts my gyro mounts come loose some times but common practice if it feels loose it most likely it will be ,we the people mounts come with a wrench for mounts that works awesome

U brake lugs are further forward than Vees, so it doesn't fit. Brake Plates are still available, although rare. These days they're generally not needed. Vees require a closer running pad, have less modulation, and are of a weaker design. Also the levers tend to want a spring in for smoothness. Try having a cross over straddle cable, or short straddle cable so the main line cable has to go through the frame. That style of cable setup is similar to how Vees work. Alternatively you can run a dual cable gyro and cross the cables over by the seat tube for increased power too, but that's a bit more hassle imo. With some decent brake pads and good rim finish you can have a super smooth 1 finger locking brake. I just use 2 for locking and 1 for manuals. Modulation has its benefits. Also running less snapier brakes makes you less reliant on them which can aid your riding, but without the restriction brakeless gives you.
