Mary is like: i can excuse ritualistic murder but i draw the line at profiting from it
l felt like she was more disappointed by just wanting to profit from it in a monetary way... like, if the woman was profiting from it by being able to blackmail important people or by getting more power Mary would be fine by it, but just doing it for some bits of cash is so dull-witted to her,, thats why she said the woman didnt 'deserve' the book
It shows a lack of appreciation. Even if you think it's horrifying and disgusting, you'd still think too much of the power to just use it to make money. You really would need some kind of apathy to place money above that power.
ah yes a true anti-capitalist!!
Gertrude: You can excuse ritualistic murder?!?
@@silverquill101 omg community reference???
Anyone who says Gertrude and Mary liked eachother have evidently never had a grandparent who despised someone.
The vibe I'm getting from them is kind of like they used to be friends or have been through things together and have some sort of "friendship" with a lot of rivalry and arguments
@@lilaboxx i think it’s like they used to be friends but then they went through something traumatic and never really talked again and kinda hated seeing eachother cause it reminded them of it

In a British show, she just has to be a Villain, there's no way around it.
She offered tea to the fellow who came to sell her Ex Altiaora in episode 4, Page Turner, and drank some herself. Wierd.
@@aprilbrown53 It was awful though wasn't it?
@@aprilbrown53 *****Spoilers****
For a second I read this as "came to sell her Ex," and knowing how this podcast goes I think that's very funny.
EDIT: I made a factually incorrect statement, thanks @maxcavadel9350 for the correction. Deleted!
Considering what the British did as a whole in pursuit of Tea, I'm rather keen to think the opposite hahaha.
Is a high sass level a requirement for the position of Archivist?
Yes it is actually
yes
Yes. A job requirement that is absolutely 100% without a doubt a necessity. Nothing else. Just sass.
As an archivist myself I can tell you that it is in fact a job requirement for any archivist anywhere

Tbh, as a cook I've been burnt enough and been around enough burns, (including some pretty bad ones) that the intended spookiness of that line went over my head until I read your comment. Lol.
Can we all just collectively shudder at the pure manic joy in Jon's voice as he cracks open the floorboard compartment?
It made me happy, was like a kid on christmas morning ahah
i've only had mary keay for 22 minutes but if anything happened to her i would throw a party
Omg thissss
So there's a flesh book, a tiny animal bone book, a bone fuckery book, a book that smells of ozone and gives you vertigo (which has been burned), and a book that burns/boils people. Mary has the flesh and tiny animal bone book. Gerard used it on her???? Jared has the bone fuckery book (The Boneturner's Tale). Ex Altiora, the ozone-vertigo book, was burned by Gerard. The burning/boiling book is in the possession of the police force because they got it from Jose after he burned a house. That or Jose got it back or something.
Gotcha.
ayy thanks its hard to keep track of all of leitners fucked up books lmao
I think there was a copy of Ex Altiora

So much adrenaline shot through my body at that line.
Yes, Mary is just as delightfully creepy as Michael... and wow, lots of biblical names, huh.
But holy crap, so much is happening.
I think the biblical names thing is just because they’re British
Mary and Michael are super common names in many languages. I don't think it has any deeper meaning in this case.
I wasn't expecting to love Mary Keay, but here I am. I think her voice is my favorite so far.
Also, her saying she prefers to "diversify her portfolio," I feel like it sort of backs up my theory that the Magnus Institute is associated with one specific entity (probably the giant eye one) and Mary decided she'd rather dip her toes into all of them.
The creaking floorboards!!! Those have been bothering me in the background of all Gertrude's tapes because I thought they were doors being opened! But early hints at a secret storage area? This podcast is so satisfying gosh dang.

I've noticed the number of likes has dropped significantly from the first season and I can only assume everyone who hasn't liked these episodes are too involved in the story to give it a thought. Note to self: go back and like the ones I've missed
I can imagine a lot of people just listen to this podcast in the playlist and don't pay attention because of the auto play
I get absorbed in tasks and the next episode comes up before I remember to like the last one.
I've been trying to like the episodes, but I usually binge a good 20 episodes in one sitting while I'm drawing or whatnot and I forget to like each video as they pass :p
Jon was a creep before, but with that floorboard he's just being creepy.
Only just realized the ominous music starts the moment Gertrude says “Mary Keay”
so am i just expected to ignore the amount of raw sexual tension between mary and gertrude or
it would be a crime to ignore it, honestly.
They're amicable exes
Especially with how *into* the story Mary seems to be
...wot?
I mean, I don’t think you can ignore something that doesn’t exist
In this fandom, most people agree on Jon/Martin, but when it comes to Mary/Gertrude. Hoo its like a warzone.

I also love that casual name-dropping of The End. In context it just sounds like she’s just referring to death but it’s a different story when you find out about all the entities.
oh yes the puns
Who can see eye to eye to a short person?
This is coming from a short person.
DOESN’T MARY DIE THE SAME WAY SHE IS DESCRIBING?
@@JA-iu3eq my theory is that It's Free Immortality but idk how well it holds up. whatever the case i feel like she had it done intentionally, since like you said, she didnt seem all that upset and her son was Presumably in possession of her book (n i feel like if someone else had turned her skin into a book, they wouldve taken the book themselves instead of giving it back to gerard)
but thats just a theory. a g-
Feel the same way, she knew she was running out of time so made her son perform the ritual on her, that's why she changed from before and why it sounds like he resents her when he burns that book, also is why he was acquired because her body disappeared
This episode has made me certain that she intentionally chose to die this way. Towards the end of the statement she says "After a lifetime, I know all [the book's] secrets, save one. And I have a pretty good idea about how to find that." Only question is whether or not her son was involved in the death
her voice is so soothing.... i truly adore this podcast
So maybe that's how Mary was able to return to talk to Dominic Swain in ep 4.
the slowly louder music that was going on constantly in the background, which is usually not until the climax was honestly so concerning
Everyone focusing on the Mary/Gertrude and barely anyone commenting on the actual big reveals that are dropped here.
They're much more obvious when you know them already
shhhhhh lol
Oof, going from Daisy's good voice last time to Mary's somehow creepy voice this time is.... quite a bit of whiplash. o.O
Hell yes. Finally some progress on the Gertrude case.
Not only was the recording full of more info about how you actually use a leitner but now John has the laptop too? What a juicy episode. My only regret is that I have to put it down for a bit.
Jon: Mary me Gertrude didn’t like each other
Also Jon: Martin showing compassion, caring for me and bringing me tea and lunch? Suspicious he must be working for someone
Relistening to it makes me wonder just /how much/ I... do not remember my initial reactions to all this; I must have devoured all the episodes too fast. BUT GOD MARY IS SO INTRIGUING; AND THE MENTION OF ERIC! I find it quite fascinating that Gertrude goes "I should tell Elias"; is this a ploy for Mary, or does she genuinely worked with Elias with far more ease than Jon? I hope we get to hear more about their relationship in any case!
Maybe that's why she got killed and Jon's at least right about not trusting Elias.
Gertrude you clever beast.
Is it me, or do Jon's direct statement givers tend to be more focused. It could just be old age, but I wonder... Maybe he really is a better Archivist than Gertrude.
At about 10 minutes in I finally realized that Ms Keay sounds _exactly_ like Yzma from Emperor's New Groove

@@huntercharleston5812 Ayep. She sounds like she'd poison soup she brought sick people. Her voice is like razor blades hidden in candy.
I really enjoy the dynamic of Gertrude and Mary. From the vibes I get in this episode, I’d say they embody that friendship trope in fiction between two characters who are extremely knowledgeable on a certain topic, tolerate each other, but aren’t _exactly_ on the same side (yes, Mary said they were, but I’m not sure of how true it was… perhaps in an “enemy of my enemy” way, but no more than that, *I think* ). I almost ship them, but I think I prefer them being friends.

"elias might not have killed her" okay dude
My theory from this episode and what we know so far:
Okay, lots of info in this episode. More things that affirm my theory of the institute being working for the open eye entity. Mary's family have been protected by it since her ancestor started working for it as we learn in that 1816 letter to magnus. She hints at least a couple of times that she's not only working for the open eye (the most obvious one is when she said about "a singular devotion being too restrictive"). But we also learn that the open eye entity is also a sinister one, when she says that she likes watching people dying but not being the one to do it. I believe we also get more info about the people who work for the open eye (whether they know it or not is a different thing), how some of them are on the "offensive", getting out and doing work for it (like the researchers and also gerard), and some of them are just staying behind and gathering the info (like the archivists).
Now, I had to google it 'cause what mary said about the last secret of the book and saying gertrude to "wish her luck" intrigued me, and it turns out that mary died in the same year of this statement, according to one of season 1's episodes (the first time we hear about her and gerard). So, my theory is that that last secret of the book she is reffering to is probably the one she did or tried to do and led to her death. She did the same thing she was doing to the book's victims, with the skin and all, and the victims seem like they're forever trapped in that book. So, I'm guessing the last secret of the book had something to do with making her like the others, forever linked with that book, but unlike the others she wouldn't be trapped in it. So, I'm guessing something like "as far as the book exists I can exist and the only way to kill me is to destroy the book alltogether". Since she appears after her death, I believe she succeeded or at least partially succeeded (maybe her face being full of the words is one of the side effects that would make her spell/ritual a partially successful one).
Gertrude knew and Elias know alot more about their situation that we thought until now, so it's interesting to see if the other people who work in the institute know what they're working for or not, or even if they're actual humans at all or if they once were humans but not anymore.
As for the "end", what is it? Is it one of the entities, or is it the place from where the entities originate from? Her saying that she doesn't find death interesting reminds me of that episode about the death entity, so is "the end" also "death"? Also, her talking about that Eric and how gertrude "should ask what's left of him" makes me thing that the page she gave to getrude is this eric she's reffering to and is someone they both know.
First time listener here. Love your theories, mate
I get Aunt Mary vibes from Gertrude and Doctor Olivia Octavius vibes from Mary
