  • My final student demoreel at Full Sail University. I am very happy how it turned out! I really tried to get every aspect of animation from a cartoony facial animation to a subtle serious acting and more realistic animations. I learned a lot from each asset and hope to keep advancing my skills. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Thanks for watching! Comments and critiques are appreciated!

    This is a really nice animation reel. The best part I liked about your reel is the appeal, that you have successfully implemented in your shots.

    I am just starting portfolio 4 at Full sail. I have to review other demo reels and stumble across yours. Looks really cool and clean. I can't wait to get to this level of work.

    how do you render the parts of character only?, like 0:25 or 0:35 and so, do you render it with background? or do you only render the character and the shadows only and then place a background on after effects or other software? plz tell i need to know how everyone does that! thank you

    • @andrewford9120
      @andrewford9120  7 років тому +1

      Sorry about the late reply but no the background was done in Maya. I was on a time constraint so I wanted to spend as little time in after effects as possible. If you plan on editing the background, lighting, shadows, etc in post production then yes you should render each separately but if not then just do it all in maya.

    I am currently in my Portfolio courses at Full Sail for Computer Animation and they are showing your reel as an example. I was just curious how you were able to get the 3 different positions of the Walk and Run cycles into one screen? I did enjoy your reel and hope mine turns out just as good!

    • @andrewford9120
      @andrewford9120  6 років тому +1

      All I did was render out a front, side, quarter view all in the same resolution. Then in After Effects laid them on top of each other. Simple post edit. I didn't know my reel was used as an example at the school. Thanks for letting me know. Good luck with your reel!

    Hey Andrew, My name is Brian. I'm a current student at Full Sail University in the Computer Animation Program, I was really inspired by the gravity and the smooth motion in your animation reel.
    I was wondering if you had any tips or words of wisdom for a current Full Sail Student? I am currently starting my 4th month of the program, I just finished Technology in the media and entertainment industry. I'm moving on to English comp 1 starting may 1st. (I'm in the extended program on campus)
    Any tips or advice you could share with me I would really appreciate! Hell, I would even pay you to tutor me haha.

    • @andrewford9120
      @andrewford9120  6 років тому +11

      Sorry for the late reply I didn't see the edited portion. Some advice i could give would have to be reference everything. For my fight scene I referenced a lot of martial art techniques and studied the weight shifts. Yes I did reference Avatar and looked at particular scenes for the setup and camera angles. For my dialogue I acted it out myself and looked at a lot of body acting from sad emotional films.
      Even before my demoreel all throughout school I looked at professional animators and their reels to see why their work was so fluid. I studied their acting choices and how I could take that and incorporate it into my work. I noticed they tend to keep things more subtle focusing more towards realism. They = Disney/Pixar. What I do keep noticing in all their films is how little they use blinks. It's a small detail but I try to look at every single detail to achieve the same quality as them.
      So make sure you are using a lot of references for any of your shots. References are the most important in any animation. Having too many references can only improve your work. I usually take a day and a half just to get all my references together to get my idea across. Ideally try to get reference from every angle. Second, study professional animators you admire so that you can see what they are doing compared to yourself and learn from that.
      Hope that helps. Good luck!

    Hi Andrew, you got a really nice demo reel here. I'm 6 months away from graduating (if everything goes as planned) and I was wondering if it was hard to find a job? How did you set your foot in the industry?

    • @andrewford9120
      @andrewford9120  6 років тому +13

      Hey I personally did not have any trouble finding a job. I believe a month or so before I was going to graduate I applied to internships. I got the internship at Sony for their baseball games. I wasn't too happy about doing sports games but I figured it was my foot in the door.
      After i graduated and I stayed in Florida for a few weeks before I was supposed to leave to California to start my internship. Full Sail hosted an event where students can get reel critiques by a recruiter from Sony. He saw my work and immediately wanted to hire me for Sony but I told him about the internship and he said he'd pick me up after the internship (he worked in a different building doing other projects than the internship). So I did the internship for 3 months then immediately went across the street in the other building to work for the recruiter and started working on Uncharted 4.
      Technically I didn't need to do the internship but I am happy I did. As much as I don't care for sports it gave me skills in other programs that helped me on my current projects. All I'm saying is to take any opportunity even if it's not your preference because the skills and experience you learn from there could get you a bigger and better position.

      That was amazing. You really inspired me to get better! I'm still at portfolio 4 but i can't wait to put animations on my demo reel. Your "action with a purpose" with Ray was my favorite; curious question, was he earthbending?

    • @andrewford9120

      I animated it myself. You probably could add to the rig and make it dynamic but I didn't do that because I wanted to show secondary motion.

  • @caseyhenderson7661
    @caseyhenderson7661 9 років тому

    That is some serious talent there. It's not just the technology or tools that does it, but the talented writers/creators/artists behind them that puts the "human feel" into it.. Great expressions and character depth.. Now just get a great story, and a script that can rival Pixar!! :D Remember, it's "all in the writing"...well, AND the expressions. :) Nice work.

    • @ProlectroLite
      @ProlectroLite 9 років тому

      ***** Yeah thanks a lot! That's exactly what I plan on working on. Story is the most difficult and the most critical important part of any animation. Nice to hear from someone else. :]

    • @caseyhenderson7661
      @caseyhenderson7661 9 років тому

      No problem. Just as long as you love it and it's what you really want to do... of course you have talent! You can always team with someone else who is a writer. Or work at/for/with Pixar or the like :D
      I myself had a small desire or pipe dream as a high schooler to get into computer animation, when I saw the 16-bit programs on home computers back then, I thought it was the coolest thing! But I eventually went into computer science and am now an IT professional. (Incidentally, my pipe dreams have grown since then, to being a novelist, music recording artist, etc.. a lot related to the writing and creative process). But anyway, if you don't mind me indulging, I wanted to share some inspiration through a few quotes from Steve Jobs (my favorites, and some of his best):
      "When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you're life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again." --Steve Jobs
      "You've got to find what you love and that is as true for work as it is for lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking and don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you've found it." --Steve Jobs
      "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." --Steve Jobs
