Upgrading the M2 Air with the additional 512GB to equal the SSD speeds of the M1 brings the overall cost to $1500. The additional cost of 16GB unified memory brings the cost to $1700. The superior 14in macbook pro 16GB/512GB has been on sale for about $1800. Why even bother with the upgraded M2 Air. Similarly, when one considers the base model M1 Air is frequently on sale for $850, and the base models are the most frequently purchased, does paying the additional $350 buy that much more performance beyond the M1.

Thank you and well said. It is one thing to talk about the upgrades but another thing when you see just how much more $$ those upgrades will cost.
IMO, the M2 MBA is for the average user, the casual user, the light user and obviously not for a heavy user. The base model is more than powerful enough for tasks. Plus, that Midnight color is 🔥

@dany ay lol Not everyone is obsessed with photography, video games, or doing video rendering. So, why is 8GB not enough? My Macbook Pro from 2016 has 8GB and has always been enough. So, really it just comes down to how you use your computer.

@dany ay lol I use a M1 Mac mini with 8 gigs of RAM, and have no problem doing podcast production, gaming, image editing, and general productivity -- and my memory pressure is usually in the green and when I do use swap it's usually less than a gig of it.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. If you're buying a MacBook right now then you should really choose between a M1 MacBook Air or M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro 14". The slight better performance, is easily tarnished by ssd issues, the increased price on the base model, weaker speakers, weaker battery life, it's still just 60hz, and the notch is useless because it doesn't have Face ID. What was the point in putting a notch and not have Face ID? And it doesn't even say MacBook Air on the panel like it used to. Then you said to upgrade it to the 16gb ram and 512ssd verison, like why wouldn't you recommend the 14" Pro at that point? Like seriously after taxes and upgrading to that version the M2 Air is 1800$+. Whereas if you go for 14" at Best Buy you're only going to pay 1600$ for a way better laptop. Even without the discount when it's just 2000$ its still so much better of a buy. For 200$ more you get a better webcam, display at 120hz, the design you liked better, better speakers, no ssd issues, or thermals because of active cooling(fan), which you didn't mention. So no, there isn't any reason for anyone to waste their money on a M2 MacBook Air.

If you recall, the original M1 Air had 2 versions, one had the same number of cores as the M2 and that was $100(?) more. So that should be factored in comparing M1 to M2 as you're getting the boosted cores of the higher M1 Air. On top of that, you're getting the newer processor (not all that different than when you could pick an i5 or i7 intel chip for your MacBook. Plus $100 for the newer processor. And there is the $200 difference. This is normal pricing for upgrades for MacBooks (at least in the US).

I think the M2 being more recent is a good thing for longevity. Does the M2 provide a noticeable different experience compared to the M1 based on the features I'm looking for? The issue of "slowness" bothers me, especially if it doesn't have the 512GB.

MagSafe and the slightly brighter screen would be nice. On the flip side, the M1 has much better heat dissapation (with a better heat sink), a more comfortable shape to type on, better sound, and better SSDs. So both have some advantages, and the advantages of the M1 are arguably more significant. But the biggest difference is price. For the trivial difference in performance, you're likely to spend $1000 more on a equivalent system. And that simply can't be justified by the trivial improvements (and some worse features). Unless you absolutely have to have the newest, shiniest thing, you're better off with a used M1 right now.

Broham, I got a base M1 last year for school, and the 8GB of RAM got killed all the time with my open tabs, zoom, etc. I did a lot of SSD swapping with it and bro, did I ever see it in the UI, things got laggy, often. I can't imagine what's going to happen for people with similar workloads using the slower base SSD. If you go M2, I don't think the base model is an option for most people. You have to go with the upgraded model with either the faster 512GB SSD or 16GB RAM.

The M1 ia a nicer shape to hold and to use. But lacks MagSafe. I'm not happy with either machine, frankly. The last great MBA was the 2017 model, which was technically the 2015 model. It had all of the ports one needed at the time and had the wedge shape for supreme table/lap usage with that sleek low-slung approach angle for your wrists. I've used the new M2 in a store and losing the wedge shape makes the computer feel thicker, with no real benefit. I prefer iPhones with a square shape as it makes the part outside the display less thick horizontally as you hold the phone and view the screen. A squared-off shape makes laptops on the other hand more bulky where you don't want them to be, below your wrists.
