Mercedes SLK 230 1998 - Boot Won't Close And Roof Won't Open

- This is unedited and so may be hard to follow but I thought I would show how I work things out in my head (which is usually just me talking to myself out loud) I did have to chase my tail a bit as at least 2 other people had attempted to fix it and had moved / re-adjusted everything and had even gone as far as changing the pump.
As it turns out, I only had to align the boot, catch and striker which was down to a siezed boot / roof hydraulic ram pulling the bar out of line. then re-adjust everything a fit a proper relay to have the pump work.

Many thanks for sharing the whole resolution process. Have replaced the front cylinder, manually operated and it's fine, jumped the relay and the pump works, so I guess my problem is now the relay as it does nothing other than lowering windows.

I love watching a problem being solved... I have fixed and upgraded my old Mac Pro 4,1 , I have been fortunate enough to get an SLK 2.3 Kompressor, the boot of which closes... the back of it looks like the dismantled SLK you worked on here, so living in the Devon, being hardtop it is a fine car as it is, but being able to tinker and problem solve with care in a farm shed opens up roof possibilities. Brilliant video. Will update you when it is done. Thanks for the video.

Whereabouts is the boot locking motor? Can't get it to work with the central locking the key doesn't work I don't know if it's not the right lock or it's just seized the mechanism seems okay the cable to it the yellow one I can't see where that goes to?

I have a 1998 slk 230, the light blinks but when I press nothing happens. Also, my pump is really low on fluid? What is best next action, I don't wanna go mad like the guy you described and start changing a lot just need a few first tips before I start spending big
Hi buddy, if you can’t hear the motor working or trying to then the first job would be to check there is power getting to the pump. Check the fuses under the bonnet first and swap out the relay as they are cheap. If you are handy then you can test the relay. If still nothing then you will have to check the wiring using a multimeter to see if power is getting to pump. It’s possibly the pump is faulty. If the fluid is low then there must be a leak somewhere so check all the hydraulic connections on top of pump, rams, etc.

Hello! If it won’t release then the cable is either seized or trapped / jammed. Unfortunately you will have to remove the plastic panel to get into it

My slk roof goes down with no problem but the switch stays on red when I start to drive it starts to blink, does your switch stay on lighted red or off when your roof is open .
I don’t know if the light stays on when the roof is down. This wasn’t my car it was a customers

Is there any way to fix the rear roof cylinder without removing completely? Also, reverse lights just stopped working. Any idea how to access the the gear shifter assembly to replace the switch or fix connections?
Which roof cylinder are you referring to buddy?
As for reverse lights, I take it you have tested the bulb and then for power? If after that you suspect the reverse switch on gearbox, it will be accessed from underneath the car on the gearbox

The cylinder is the one behind the passenger seat that you can see from the trunk. It was visibly leaking from the seal.
Regarding the reverse lights, I changed the bulbs and fuse, but they still wouldn't work properly. I can get them to light up, if I get the shifter in exactly the right position between "reverse" and "neutral", but they won't stay on while backing up.

Hi, very interesting video. I have the same problem, windows go down then nothing except a flashing red light on the switch. I have checked the relay and it does click but I have still ordered a new one. This happened overnight, one minute working fine next time just the red flashing light, the manual roof lock cables seem to be stuck ( pulled out) seems like I may have a similar problem. Hi, how do you manually close this roof?
It will be in your owners manual but you basically release the pressure in the hydraulic pump with an Allen key and pull the roof up by hand

Boot closes and opens but red indicator on dash keeps flashing quickly - tested all switches - ok.
Help...
There will be something either jamming / sticking the roof. Usually one of the catches but try and see if it is free from the front 2 catches above the visors
