There are three moments in a man’s life when he experiences pure joy, the birth of his first child, his marriage, and when he discovers he has engine problem in an old BMW...
after i spent more then 1200$ and i was plaining to buy new engine because the BMW thief i mean dealer told me that it will cost me more then 2800$ to get fixed ....your video have saved my life and my money and my time i wish if i can reward you BIG THANKS FOR YOU
I had this happen to my 5 series but not as bad. I recommend doing a tune up. It turns out its due to coils starting to misfire. If i am wrong, i do apologize i am not an expert but that is how i fixed mine. Plus a tune up is a good way to start. Mine would do rough idling at times and my check engine light came on.
Check your ground straps and maybe get a smoke test to see if you have any air intake leaks. For misfires pull a few coils and see if there is any oil on your plugs but car is pretty new unless you drive hard or someone did some work and didn't re-install a ground straps. Check the PVC Vacuum. Better get some tools or you'll be broke. B.M.W. (Bring Me Work) Lemme know what it was boss.
Yes but you need the sensor plugged in you can't drive around without it. The computer won't know how much air to fuel ratio it needs to run the engine properly. The cause of the RMPs going wacky is probably a dirty sensor try cleaning it.

Careful some codes it throws out arent trully what they entend to be. sorry for the fact you spent so much money however the air flow sensor could have possibly been a huge factor. but i know the true problem to the misfires in separate cylinders. it leads to alot of different codes an people pay so much money to fix it and find out it didn't solve the problem. i own a 328i sedan 2011. i had rough idle an shuttering. i tried so many things. i replaced camshaft sensor, solenoids, took it to a friend who had an amazing computer and still it through off so many different codes that had no reason to be there. so i decided one last try or thats it i was gonna trade it in. it happened to be the coils an spark plugs. but before i replaced them it got so bad my car shuttered constantly from 2nd to 3rd gear i would lose power and had no response to throttle. or sometimes the car would die in the middle of the highway. after replacement of the coils and spark plugs, it had another issue with the A/C compressor. Diagnosis on the A/C compressor is loud squeals from the engine that are embarrassing and doesn't go away until car is turned off, as well as weird fluctuating A/C. (This can also cause some shuttering). I replaced that and also reset transmission ,due to late gear shifts, by holding down the gas pedal for 40 sec while the key is in and engine off. then drive 20mph for a mile. My car now operates like a champ and has great gas mileage! all of this was 25,000 miles ago. HOPEFULLY YOUR NOT USING UNLEADED! If you want the best out of your BMW give it the best. Thanks, Aaron, does the key need to be turned to position 1 while you are holding down the gas pedal, or just placed in? I noticed my 2004 325i with 202K miles is having late gear shifting lately.

Your timings out you need to get it lined back up with a special tool because your maf is confused from the air supply from the valves do the chain its common for misfire and rough idle
Thank you ive been working on bmw engines few years after taking the engines apart its always timing problems u only know this if you unplug the maf and the misfire goes you know then its your timing

Problem could also be on an n54 when it gets tuned the mosfets blow out if you slam on the gas because between late 2008 and early 2009 they upgraded the ecu but any year before that, the mosfets blow on the circuit board and you have to replace them, some think it’s as simple as coils and sparks but if it’s not that then this is a huge thing as well.

This is why I went from a e46 330ci to a OBDI 1988 toyota supra. I hated the elecrical problems with the OBDII BMW ramdom missifre with a brand new ignition, fuel, air system OEM parts and still had missfires codes. So I sold it for half the price I bought it and bought a toyota 27 years old with oem parts and runs like new.
willdogism i thought german was better than asian manufacturers that why i bought Bmw, but they are not so good.i really like the Bmw body but the engine is not good.
+conversejordan german cars are good at "felt quality". The inner quality feels good and from the point of driving, they feel good, too. And they are good when you want to show off. But from technical side, they are very faulty. Especially the last ~ 10 years, they became more and more faulty. Volkwagen and BMW i.e. have problems with timing chains, piston slaps (knocking sounds), many electrical faults, breaking ignicion coils and many small problems like this with the air leaks. Almost every Polo that is older than 8 years, has it. If you want to have a reliable car, dont buy a german car ! Buy Toyota! If you want to show off, buy a german car and save money (or learn) to repair it :)
This was happening to my BMW - in most cases its one of those sensors that is causing that issue.. - I changed the vanos and idle control sensors - new spark plugs and I also replaced the fuel injector for cylinder 6 - problem solved. Always test for vacuum leaks, if you do not have a smoke machine to do a smoke test----- - one quick way to test for a vacuum leak is to do this - start the car, while the car this idling rough, remove the engine oil cap for the engine, if the rough idle goes away, they you have a vacuum leak. Put the oil cap back on top of the engine and if the rough idle returns then you know you need to change the ---> rocker cover gasket. My friend and own a shop that fixes only BMW's. WAHT AMAZES ME IS HOW THOSE IDIOTS AT BMW COULDNT FIGURE THAT OUT, INSTEAD THEY RIP YOU OFF AND HAVE YOU BUYING THIGNS YOU DONT NEED. Tell them you want your money back!!!!
I have changed all spark plugs and coils. New HPFP and 2 new Vanos solenoids. Also changed oil and coolant. But still have a rough idle when AC is OFF. Any ideas? N53 E92.
do a tune up, clean throttle body, change air filters, check if the mounts need replacing, check alternator, and if none work then take it to a mechanic
In my case I already changed the vanos the ignition coils spark plugs maf sensor new valve cover gasket cam sensors and the problem still consists it does pretty much what yours does rpm needle will dance from 500 rpm to about 1200 back and forth car drives perfectly fine when going over 5 mph but right when I come to a stop at say a stop light that’s when my car starts to surge and die I was thinking fuel injectors possibly next but didn’t want to do it if I don’t have to anyone ever figure this problem out?
Your CCV valve is bad while car is running open the engine oil cap if suks too much vacume replace CCV valve on some models ccv valve is part of a valve cover and on some models under the intake manifold
if is a missfired of course are the coils and sparkel..... don t you have a tester to put on your car and see the errors??? is not that hard to read them... the problem is when you read it , understand it and is not that.. like in my case, still trying to figure it out .... probably something electrical
My 06 325xi had a VERY rough idle to where I just had it parked because of how bad it was and you will not believe what fixed it. Well actually I have no clue because I tried everything and nothing worked until I got tired and just ran the engine for a few seconds and turned it off and, I repeated this a few times until I turned it on and the car started running beautifully. Thanks for nothing UA-cam lol
Thanks for a great video. Could I ask about my car. It got all kinds of variations of start stop problems. (3 shops thought it was the red long battery cable that runs under the car, it was loose in the back) But it wasn't it as they fastened it. It sometimes starts with no problem, then it stops suddenly while driving, it sometimes don't start at all with no ignition sound, and sometimes it tries to 'give' with ignition sound but never 'grabs'. Starts fine without problems Doesn't start, without ignition sound Doesn't start, with ignition sound What could this be?! Thank you for any insight.
Annette Rodriguez your needing a catalytic because your oxigen sensors are bad. before you spend time and money on another cats take the front oxigen sensors and check them if the small holes are clogged with carbon it won't read correct and it sends a bad reading to the DME ( ECU or engine computer ) and usually it tricks the computer to throw codes with system too lean or too high meaning it had to adjust the amount of gasoline pushed to your injectors because the amount of air was higher or lower than what should be. if it push more gasoline it won't get burnt complete and some goes directly to the cats . also you can see it by smelling a spark plug tip , oddor is hard and sometimes looks wet or dark . different from oil . or unplug the engine oil refill cap and smell it . when it smell as gasoline instead of oil that's your issue. you can try cleaning the o2 sensors with some brush and air pressure if it doesn't work just get some news. even if you put new cats and don't change your o2 sensors you will get the same issue in the future . also if there is any oil leak or vacuum leak it will make your car kill the o2 sensors and then your cats. bmw engines are made to be almost sealed from air that's why they have a vacuum pump .
I have the same problem with my BMW 135i m sport package 2009It's been a month now. They changed all 6 sparkplugs, 6 coils, one vanos, the electrical gas pump, the mechanical gas pump, changed the oil, carbon shampooing.... and It cost me 3000$. I have been in and out of the garage for at least five time. It was fine friday when i left the garage, but Saturday morning it starded again. It's always in the morning when the car is cold. The idle is malfunctionning and the car vibrates a whole lot, and the motor light is on.Going back to the garage Monday morning and I am not paying one cent more😤
I'm where you are at with this one. Everyone I hear from points to one of the ignition coils. I'm having the same issue hesitating while coming to a stop on my 07 328i randomly once a week at least now. But then will start it back up and won't have that problem for the rest of the day. Already cleaned a vanos solenoid (not sensor) and still same problem after a week. Sooo I found a pack of coils for $100 and trying that with new plugs cause they go out eventually, recommended anyways when you do a tune up. If I still have the same problem I will buy two new vanos solenoids...
Hi, I have had a number of BMW´s and MB's. I have had many air leak dependent faults. BMWs often have air leaks in rubber intake parts, and MB´s often have cracked vacuum hoses. I always start my investigations by scrutinizing the parts above, which are the cheapest to repair. I have seen many times that people swap expensive parts such as MAF-sensors, other expensive parts then eventually giving up and sell the parts after draining the bank account. So list possible fault reasons, and start with the cheapest fix first. Good luck.
Idle or crankshaft " vanos" This bmw need proper maintenance . If you drives more than 20,000 miles then you gotta check manifold and clean carbons from intakes .....
my car is idling rough like yours, I tried coils and spark plugs did the throttle body didnt work, finally went to the dealer they told me my emissions are good so they said an ECU transistors could be blown so I need a new ECU $2600 lol BMW 328 XI 2008
Thankfully my problem is not that critical or not that “shaky” mines just idles at 550 and it revs up to 650-750 and goes back down again, but I’m definitely keeping an eye on it, and I see everyone commenting to get the ignition coils and spark plugs, will see and get back with details, I’m on a 2006 330xi
Hey it's throwing a misfire code in my cylinder number four I disconnect the flow sensor it's not shaken going up hills no more.. but I still have a little mis so somewhere I'm 7000km over do on oil change
Would replacing the ignition coil and spark plugs solve my problem as well? The car only does it when I come to a stop. When I’m at a constant speed you can’t recognize anything wrong. No check engine light or anything either
Marco Felix Yes, ended up being that the intake vanos gear had failed which was just replaced. So not sure why it failed but the replaced and retimed and it’s mostly all good now. Doesn’t have that problem but now when I go to accelerate from a stop it feels like it’s slipping.
hi there, thanks for informative video!! just wondering does this only happen on a cold start??? Did you get the same problem after the engine heats up and is driven for a while??
Barry Connor I got once a hard misfire even on both cold and hot after the car warmed and that was some kind of cover the coils have that was cracked and it was as an insulator or something to keep the spark hard each time . I guess it was falling all over the place and not going directly to the sparkplug tip . I got some random misfire messages in my 2002 bmw 745i and it stall so hard with no power when driving. it was protecting the cylinder from getting flooded of gasoline and harm the engine by bending a valve or something. this cars are are very sensitive and even a small oil leak or vacuum leak ( example. if you don't plug all the way back the engine oil filler dipstick you can get a huge misfire. )
Hey just read this comment now. Did you resolve your issue? And if so how did you resolve It? as I have exactly same problem as the rough idling stops once heated up. But sometimes it does lack power. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@@elvissamata7526 I read through all the questions and replies. Buried in one of the threads he says it was a vacuum leak. Hope that helps. I will be taking my car in first thing Monday Morning ):
@@jayhall851 Nop. It is one of the most unreliable cars I have ever had. It is in my garage for a few months now, don't even ride it. I will get someone to take a look when we are out of that virus. I believe I might have a major engine problem and it might need a rebuild. So sad for a car has only 120 thousands miles on it.
i hade the same problem. Change your oil filter O rings. the small one thats one the tip of that plastic thing. i don't know what its called but try replacing the small o ring.
so! in short.. disconnecting the MAS sensor on the intake cleared your issue ie the MAS was faulty.. now have you replaced the sensor to find the start-up good now or is the issue still occurring I've a similar issue with my E46 318i & well the more I'm reading up & watching vids the list is growing shorter & shorter & I'm also starting to aim towards the MAS sensor being faulty/bad.. with the poor running have you found any error codes or not?
Mal P unplugging the Mas sensor let me bypass the computer. I replaced it with a new one but did the same thing with the RPMs going up-and-down. This part was never my issue. Problem fixed it was caused by an air leak in my main engine block
Don't take it to dealer, these guys have no clue what's wrong with these German vehicles. The car is a disaster in the first place, so don't buy it unless you have nothing to waste money on. As for the shaking problem, I had the same issue. Replaced all spark plugs with coils and problem solved.
@@aimized1460 No...BUT. I found the problem. My 2010 529i N52, factory idle was set to low. Like 550, took it to dealer(they know me well and are good people) had them go into software and change idle to 700. Minor TO MODERATE shaking at idle GONE!
@@aimized1460 your very welcome. I got push back from the dealer. But they can do it. Takes a BMW software program. But completely got rid of the problem.
thanks for the info I'm having the same problem thanks to you I know what to check first don't worry about the video what your saying is what's important thanks. good luck hope your problem is solved.
This problem happened to my bmw and the problem was the pressure lines from the engine to the gas tank.... had to get new lines in costs me 400 with labor
Mine has been pretty rough too.. I'm wondering if it's either the spark plugs or my 02 Censor.. it's not my battery or alternator.. but it starts strong and then it putts out on me and dies when sitting.

I need to replace my crankshaft Seal.
A simple smoke test found the problem.
Beamer Fanatics E39 E90 im glad you found the problem because i never did on my e46 with m54...Electrical nightmare lol.
willdogism i thought german was better than asian manufacturers that why i bought Bmw, but they are not so good.i really like the Bmw body but the engine is not good.
Beamer Fanatics E39 E90 I had the same problem, it was the fuel injectors

german cars are good at "felt quality".
MY ROUGH IDLE WAS CAUSED FROM AN AIR LEAK THAT I END UP FINDING OUT BY DOING MY DIY SMOKE TEST
Great video! Did you ever figure out the cause? My bmw is doing the same thing. Thanks
lol love it I ain’t the only one that says iPhone sucks!
lol.. the glitch was taking over the phone camera 😅😅😅
🤣🤣🤣
I have changed all spark plugs and coils. New HPFP and 2 new Vanos solenoids. Also changed oil and coolant. But still have a rough idle when AC is OFF. Any ideas?
N53 E92.
My 5 series 2004 would shake so bad it'd shut off while waiting at a light. Hubby replaced a #2 coil, problem solved.
do a tune up, clean throttle body, change air filters, check if the mounts need replacing, check alternator, and if none work then take it to a mechanic
PissedOffByron The problem was caused by my own mistake
Hassan Ali have you done any work to the vehicle before The problem started.
How did you check for air leaks, like you mentioned toward the beginning of the video? Thanks
You could also be the O2 sensors
Hey I have the same problem I disconnected the flow sensor and it solved 70% the problem I have a ton of power now
Hey scotty, what year is your bimmer
"Dam Iphone stuck on stupid"Lmao!!🤣
Starts fine without problems
Doesn't start, without ignition sound
Doesn't start, with ignition sound
What could this be?!
Thank you for any insight.
Audun Jemtland replace your serpentine belt, Buy it from the dealership.
Does it shake when you drive? You need to clean your both Venos selanoids if it happens again replace both exhust and intake of your Venos.
The other thing is use premium fuel only. (95 or 98 octane fuel). Check your spark plugs and your coil seals if it needs replacing.
Btw you can do all this by yourself and save some money
My Channel my car needs a new catalytic converter. could that be a reason it shakes/ vibrates or could it be something else
Annette Rodriguez your needing a catalytic because your oxigen sensors are bad. before you spend time and money on another cats take the front oxigen sensors and check them if the small holes are clogged with carbon it won't read correct and it sends a bad reading to the DME ( ECU or engine computer ) and usually it tricks the computer to throw codes with system too lean or too high meaning it had to adjust the amount of gasoline pushed to your injectors because the amount of air was higher or lower than what should be. if it push more gasoline it won't get burnt complete and some goes directly to the cats . also you can see it by smelling a spark plug tip , oddor is hard and sometimes looks wet or dark . different from oil . or unplug the engine oil refill cap and smell it . when it smell as gasoline instead of oil that's your issue.
you can try cleaning the o2 sensors with some brush and air pressure if it doesn't work just get some news. even if you put new cats and don't change your o2 sensors you will get the same issue in the future . also if there is any oil leak or vacuum leak it will make your car kill the o2 sensors and then your cats. bmw engines are made to be almost sealed from air that's why they have a vacuum pump .
yo Game thanks for the reply. I will def check that out 👍
I have the same problem with my BMW 135i m sport package 2009It's been a month now. The idle is malfunctionning and the car vibrates a whole lot, and the motor light is on.Going back to the garage Monday morning and I am not paying one cent more😤
This small air leak that I had cost me $4000
Did you end up finding the issue ? Mine does the same only when it’s cold out
mass air flow sensor is NOT the problem bro. one of the ignition coil is down. i have the same problem.
Hi,
I have had a number of BMW´s and MB's. I have had many air leak dependent faults. BMWs often have
air leaks in rubber intake parts, and MB´s often have cracked vacuum hoses.
I always start my investigations by scrutinizing the parts above, which are the cheapest to repair. I have seen
many times that people swap expensive parts such as MAF-sensors, other expensive parts then eventually
giving up and sell the parts after draining the bank account.
So list possible fault reasons, and start with the cheapest fix first.
Good luck.
You are correct about that. Thank you for your input
Repair Fanatic did you found the problem I have the same problem on my car
Idle or crankshaft " vanos"
This bmw need proper maintenance . If you drives more than 20,000 miles then you gotta check manifold and clean carbons from intakes .....
you sir know nothing
Lmfao what bro.
BMW means Buy more warranty...enjoy you beemer
I had same problem with my BMW I took it to almost everywhere and I changed the Coils all of them it fix the problem
I changed the 6 coils and the problem was worse.
my car is idling rough like yours, I tried coils and spark plugs did the throttle body didnt work, finally went to the dealer they told me my emissions are good so they said an ECU transistors could be blown so I need a new ECU $2600 lol BMW 328 XI 2008
I will highly recommend to have your engine smoked out for any air leaks that could be causing the rough idle.
2 years later please update me i might need to do this with mine
Any solution ?
How did you fix the misfire in cylinder 4? oh and how did you update the computer(ECU wrong data)?
Hey it's throwing a misfire code in my cylinder number four I disconnect the flow sensor it's not shaken going up hills no more.. but I still have a little mis so somewhere I'm 7000km over do on oil change
3:13 almost had a heart attack
😫😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😫😫😂😫😂😫😂😫😂😫😂😂😂
🤣
😂😂😂
Thank God it's the camera, I thought I was tripping for a moment.
dhalsim1 😂😂😂😂😂
“ I paid the 160 for them to welcome me there “ facts bro
Would replacing the ignition coil and spark plugs solve my problem as well? The car only does it when I come to a stop. When I’m at a constant speed you can’t recognize anything wrong. No check engine light or anything either
Anthony Cocomazzi have you figured it out?
Marco Felix Yes, ended up being that the intake vanos gear had failed which was just replaced. So not sure why it failed but the replaced and retimed and it’s mostly all good now. Doesn’t have that problem but now when I go to accelerate from a stop it feels like it’s slipping.
Did you have to reprogram the mass sensor? thumbs up for the vid 👍
NO
thank you so much for the video. Funny that my car shakes just like your camera and this video solved my problem..
hi there, thanks for informative video!! just wondering does this only happen on a cold start??? Did you get the same problem after the engine heats up and is driven for a while??
Barry Connor
I got once a hard misfire even on both cold and hot after the car warmed and that was some kind of cover the coils have that was cracked and it was as an insulator or something to keep the spark hard each time .
Thanks bro I had the sensor disconnected. 🤣😭😭
With the sensor disconnected your car should be sputtering all over and vibrating like crazy how on earth did that fix your issue my guy…
Thank you for the video 💯
Cylinder misfire, change ignition coil. Common problem with the E70 BMW X5 & X6
I did change spark plugs and coil, didn't go away, still vibrates like crazy
@@DrAlmurshidy did you fix
@@jayhall851 Nop. It is one of the most unreliable cars I have ever had. It is in my garage for a few months now, don't even ride it. I will get someone to take a look when we are out of that virus. I believe I might have a major engine problem and it might need a rebuild. So sad for a car has only 120 thousands miles on it.
i hade the same problem. Change your oil filter O rings. the small one thats one the tip of that plastic thing. i don't know what its called but try replacing the small o ring.
so! in short.. disconnecting the MAS sensor on the intake cleared your issue ie the MAS was faulty.. now have you replaced the sensor to find the start-up good now or is the issue still occurring
I've a similar issue with my E46 318i & well the more I'm reading up & watching vids the list is growing shorter & shorter & I'm also starting to aim towards the MAS sensor being faulty/bad.. with the poor running have you found any error codes or not?
Mal P unplugging the Mas sensor let me bypass the computer. I replaced it with a new one but did the same thing with the RPMs going up-and-down. This part was never my issue. Problem fixed it was caused by an air leak in my main engine block
My car idles a little bit over 500rpms it feels like if my car is off😂😂
Don't take it to dealer, these guys have no clue what's wrong with these German vehicles. The car is a disaster in the first place, so don't buy it unless you have nothing to waste money on. As for the shaking problem, I had the same issue. Replaced all spark plugs with coils and problem solved.
You mean the diagnosis and repair was incorrect at the first time. Any refund? Parts or labor?
Good video bud. Funny too. I'm in the same position. Gonna buy a new MAS and hopefully that stop my rough sporadic rough idle.
Did it work for you I got this issue
@@aimized1460 No...BUT. I found the problem. My 2010 529i N52, factory idle was set to low. Like 550, took it to dealer(they know me well and are good people) had them go into software and change idle to 700. Minor TO MODERATE shaking at idle GONE!
@@xrpadoption3293 awesome man thanks for the reply , people talking about these different things when in reality this is the issue thank you brother
@@aimized1460 your very welcome. I got push back from the dealer. But they can do it. Takes a BMW software program. But completely got rid of the problem.
@@aimized1460 get to know a BMW service writer. They usually do work on the side because most are usually past mechanics at BMW.
thanks for the info I'm having the same problem thanks to you I know what to check first don't worry about the video what your saying is what's important thanks. good luck hope your problem is solved.
Thank you appreciate it. It turned out to be an air leak in my situation
where was the air leak if you don't mid me asking
@@BeamerFanaticsE39E90 where did the leak end up being?
how do you fix it? What was your problem?
A bad battery will cause half of those codes to pop up as well.
Awesome video Bro!!!
One of the coil packs is bad trust me
I think he has a faulty o2 sensor and a cracked spark plug
It’s an O2 sensor
This problem happened to my bmw and the problem was the pressure lines from the engine to the gas tank.... had to get new lines in costs me 400 with labor
Hey repair fanatic.. where was Ur air leak and how did u find it?
I wish you had a scanner and showed fuel trims and live data streams
the car was hesitating or you felt some loss of power?
I did
Mine has been pretty rough too.. I'm wondering if it's either the spark plugs or my 02 Censor.. it's not my battery or alternator.. but it starts strong and then it putts out on me and dies when sitting.
Can the o2 sensor cause rough idle?
@@barc533 try to unplug it and start ur car… yes it can cause rough idle
I'm glad I drive a Cobalt
I have the same problem on a 2009 550i ,I was told its the Eccentric Shaft a 5000$ job, good luck!
Talas $5000?? 😂 I got quoted today for the same job at a little over $1000 I have a 2012 535i
