@@pedddler Hard to say he won the fight in the end. Wendel was gassed, but Mcsorely's punches did no damage. Wendel landed more & had the better shots.
Wendel Clark. Always answered the bell. Didn’t score in the 6-0 wins , but would get you a goal when you where down 2-1 . Gave you a big hit every game, that kept the opposition timid and rushing their passes. You really didn’t want this stud dropping his gloves while staring at you. Still my favourite player and I’m a Cunucks fan.
After Maple Leafs' superstar Doug Gilmour goes down to the ice because of the high elbow by LA heavyweight Marty McSorley, Toronto's great power forward Wendel Clark unhesitatingly charges in after Marty, gloves off. McSorley is ready for Clark and gets his gloves off just in time. They join in battle in front of the Kings' net as all the players gather around and start shoving away at each other, and the Toronto crowd goes nuts. Clark and McSorley grab on and then start going toe-to-toe, throwing simultaneous right hands. Clark is able to get inside on his taller and bigger foe, and he has the range. Clark lands about three right hands, two of them being major bombs, directly in the face. McSorley is also landing as he takes these shots from Wendel, but his punches aren't quite as telling as Clark's punches. Incredibly, McSorley is able to absorb these pulverizing blows. Indeed, taking those shots only seemed to fire him up. Clark appeared to be tired out within a few seconds (perhaps he had a long shift leading up to the fight, and it WAS late in the game, too), so he stopped throwing and started hanging on. McSorley kept his right hand pumping as Clark sought to keep his face out of the line of fire. McSorley landed several punches to the back of the head of the Leaf captain. The two coasted around the ice as McSorley kept up his onslaught. (At this point, a second fight erupted between Todd Gill and Dave Taylor, but it was uneventful, especially compared to THIS battle!) Clark let go and tried to fire off some punches again. He tossed in a couple rights, but his punches appeared to have little steam behind them. Opening himself up to throw punches left Wendel vulnerable, and McSorley cranked Clark with a great uppercut to the face. That punch rocked Clark, who quickly went back to holding on and wrestling. Eventually, the linesmen stopped it and sent them both to their respective dressing rooms. Gilmour, meanwhile, had recovered from the smack to the head by Marty and was on his feet again. He moved over to the L.A. bench and exchanged words and shoves with some of the Kings. The other players on the ice got in there and prevented it from escalating. McSorley goes off the ice and puts his hand over the TV camera that was in his face. His left eye would be swollen and multi-colored the next day, courtesy of those two big bombs Clark got him with at the start of the fight. I saw an interview with McSorley at the next day's practice, and he was shrugging and smiling about his black eye. As to who won the fight, I give a narrow edge to McSorley. Yes, Clark did land the best shots of the fight and Marty was sporting highly visible after-effects. But overall, McSorley landed MANY more punches (including a stunning uppercut) than Clark did and was in total control for about 90% of the battle. He really worked over Clark good, even if Clark wasn't showing any visible injuries. If Clark hadn't have landed those two big shots, I'd say it was a clear win for Marty. But Wendel did do some damage, so that turns it into merely a narrow win for McSorley. This battle between McSorley and Clark was one of the events of the year for its importance to this hard-fought playoff series and the sheer emotion it generated. A legendary fight!
Simply put MM would have broken many jaws with that uppercut. The reason Clark was able to stay on his feet and compete was his heavy thick boned head and jaw.
You forgot to mention one thing that most fail to note...as the two began to fight, Todd Gill pushes Marty from behind...that is why Taylor got involved with Gill, that was a cheap shot...I am pretty sure that threw Marty off early and that's when he got caught by Clark...great fight and great series...the Kings had a history with Gilmour dating back to his days in Calgary
Graham Cruickshank Ya right bud. I’m sure when McSorley sees the scar (if any) by Wendel, McSorely thinks, “oh yeah, that cut by Wendel...I remember dropping his ass and I was still standing...”
Lol check out how pissy X Marquise is over an incident that happened 25 years ago. Settle down, kid. It’s only a UA-cam video of a game that happened a quarter of a century ago.
Wendel played at 195, McSorley at 235 and Gilmour at 175. So McSorley's cheap shot was against a guy who was SIXTY pounds lighter than him. Coward. Wendel fought a guy who was 40 pounds heavier. THAT my friends is actual courage. McSorley was just a thug.
What some of these trained thugs are....from personal 'experience'...for example... Evil? Crazy?...? Behn Wilson. Stinken NHELL. Late 70's we're playing shinny hockey at Double Rinks Arena just outside Toronto. This is playful non contact pick up hockey with anybody who pays $6 to have some exercise fun with basically polite people of all walks of life.. Most have only gloves for any protection besides the steel toed skates. Its not a league, no refs, no 'scouts in the stands'. Its people who have regular jobs or retired having some casual exercise and relaxation. Playing SHINNY.Duh. Sometimes some want to have 6 aside and line changes. Okay, for sometimes. I noticed one big guy on the other side (it's really only 'pond' hockey) with total full equipment, wearing a #27 Montreal Canadiens sweater. Okay that's not BigM. He looked kinda silly, outa' place. Maybe he showed up at the wrong rink for some 'industrial' contact hockey league. This guy starts hitting people - really knocking people into the boards etc. Weirdo. If he hits me I'm shovin' him off and telling him to stop it. Well it happened, but some people who apparently knew who he was surrounded me, and told me to get off the ice. Okay I now knew this was 'someone'. As I'm making my way up the steps, and open the lounge door, yes lounge, just like a silly western the 'saloon door' squeaks open and a sitting old timer with a squeaky voice asks, "You know who that is?" Ya, he's an idiot." He answers "That's Behn Wilson" of the Philadelphia Flyers." The old adage "He'd cut his grandma's throat, to make the team.", applies to this Wilson and his ilk.' Oh, he can skate and score too.' - ya everyone's afraid of him...when he's gonna randomly ram ya one. One's not safe walkin' down the street with this guy on the Loser. 'But off the ice he's such a nice guy' they probably say of his ilk. This was off the "Big Ice" NHL. Shinny, for crying out loud. Lord Stanley and his Cup was really for the amateur citizenry, and hockey wasn't invented by the NHL, with it's tax subsidized Billionaire owners, arenas, and millionaire 'players' literally running rough shod over people, who really work for a living, and are not pampered gladiators, with their insane actions mimicked by fooled people paying extortionary rates for cable cabal tv idiot box. Vs the grannies. Blood sells. Tough? Tough to look at. Ditch the tv.
Stuart McDonald I met Gilmour at a party back in 93 (for about 10 minutes) and was surprised by how small he was. Im positive his listed height and weight were embellished by thr Leafs and It made me respect him even more.
Jim Hughson sucks. So generic, flat, etc. Oddly enough, compared to what’s out there in 2018, he’s fine. In the early ‘90s, I’d be SO excited whenever a Jets game was on TV (CKND, CTV, CBC), but I’d +50% enthused knowing it was on TSN - when Jim Hughson was there. Frankly, the Jets on the radio - though I didn’t realize it then - was better than TSN. Fast forward to today, and CBC, TSN, etc, all blow. Hughson’s voice also ruins NHL video games.
No idea how McSorley was still standing after Clark fed him a solid three rights. Then I remembered McSorley is from Hamilton and that's probably nothing inside his head
It was a shot to Gilmour's head and he didn't have his head down, Harry is wrong on this. If it was Gretzky getting hit like that the LA bench would have cleared
This is coming from a Red Wing fan from way back in the late 70's. The Wings and Leafs had some GREAT playoff battles and I was fortunately able to watch 2 playoff games in Maple Leaf Gardens in 1988, great place to watch hockey(and the fans, even though I was decked out in my Wings gear, we're nothing but classy BTW). That said,..I LOVED watching Wendel Clark play. The man was a beast. Even though it was late in his career It was cool seeing him in a Wings Jersey.
A great moment of passion in one of the greatest playoffs series' in NHL History. I miss when the league let players play with raw emotion and fight it out when things got too physical.
A Doubleu to be fair hockey was much different back then . McSorely would have been suspended for quite a while if this had happened today . And the players involved at the bench probably fined . Hockey was much better back then . Eye of the tiger in the background . The glory days , not this sissy league that calls itself the NHL today
2:18 Wendel Clark just skates over to Marty and DROPS!!! the gloves, Marked man. Then the rocky music starts up. BOOM, this was the best hockey ever, I watched all the leafs playoffs run back in 92-94, nothing better.
That was a great Leafs team. So much passion. Probably my favourite squad that was so close to making it to the finals. Montreal won which was the last time a Canadian team won. It could have been an all Canadian final.
Does anyone remember the front page of the Toronto Sun the next day? It was a close up of McSorley's face. His one eye was swollen shut. Wendel Clark achieved permanent legend status in Toronto for this one!
@@pedddler the series was fixed. Thats why the Kings won. You forgot the no call high stick. You draw blood. Its an automatic major. Refs did not call it. Wendel fought well for a guy 25 lbs lighter and protecting his captain. Pretty close fight. Wendel was gassed at the end.
You think think the league wanted 2 Canadian teams in the final ? Not good for USA ratings, plus expansion in Florida in 1993-94. Need an American team in the final to create more interest in hockey down south, especially with Wayne Gretzky on the team. Why do you think he got traded to LA. Nothing against Wayne Gretzky. This is my opinion of course. As I lived in that generation.
He sure did, and it didn't even faze McSorley a bit!! Towards the end of that fight Mcsorley was still swinging while Clark was gassed and didn't want to fight anymore.
Never get sick of watching the clips of this. As a young kid being at this game at the Gardens with my dad is one of my favorite hockey memories ever. The energy in that building when Clark immediately took on Marty was unreal. I will never forget it.
Wow...... wow. (I was over in Calgary, 15 years old. Played for the community of Bonavista, blue and white. Was honoured to get to pick 17 to wear). When that hit happened I jumped to my feet, enraged. Then the cameras caught up to Clark and McSorely going at it - those 3 or 4 punches... man, that's hockey right there. What a player.
I watched this playoff between Kings vs Leafs and Gilmour was being a pest with his cheapshots of elbows, pokes, and slashing at the Kings' ankles. Marty was sending a message to Gilmour to knock it off. Apparently, he didnt hit Gilmour hard enough because he went right over to the King bench provoking them even poked his stick at Daryl Sydor. Then in a following game he headbutted Marty in the chin right in front of the officials and got away with it. Gilmour was a good fiesty player, but he was no angel and a master of drawing penalties on the other team. Also, this footage didn't show Todd Gill cross checking Marty from behind knocking him down at the start of the fight giving Wendell the early advantage. Wendell may have gotten one good punch, but Marty was unfazed and came back stronger.

@@truenorth7584 What Marty did to Brashear was unjustifiable. But Marty is one of the toughest and one of the most exciting enforces in the history of the NHL.
@@pedddler maybe so, but as a leafs fan i am, of course, biased against him. and that hit on gilmour looked a little dirty too. i'll have to wattch it again.
@@pedddler Hard to say he won the fight in the end. Wendel was gassed, but Mcsorely's punches did no damage. Wendel landed more & had the better shots.
IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ELBOW! IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ELBOW!
Brilliant analysis!
When hockey was good
Wendel Clark.
My favourite player too and I’m a Habs fan lol
As I would have said many years ago, using an expression of that time, Clark had balls of steel, took on all comers and was a true BMF.
He was -130 for his career.
I was a Maple Leaf Gardens Security Supervisor working that game. What memories...what a blast!
😃👍🏾👍🏾
(At this point, a second fight erupted between Todd Gill and Dave Taylor, but it was uneventful, especially compared to THIS battle!)
Clark let go and tried to fire off some punches again.
Great accurate post!👍🏼
took 23 stitches to get McSorley to stop bleeding..... He will remember Wendel every time he looks at the scares in the mirror.
Graham Cruickshank What fight were you watching bud??? Marty wasn't even bleeding.
Hey Dave, check out Marty's right eye as he is leaving the ice. I have also had a few drinks with Wendel talking about this fight.. Have a good one.
Graham Cruickshank Ya right bud. I’m sure when McSorley sees the scar (if any) by Wendel, McSorely thinks, “oh yeah, that cut by Wendel...I remember dropping his ass and I was still standing...”
Thanks for the input ...
Lol check out how pissy X Marquise is over an incident that happened 25 years ago.
Settle down, kid. It’s only a UA-cam video of a game that happened a quarter of a century ago.
1993-'It might have been an elbow' 2019-a 5 game suspension.
Yup, and this is one case where 2019 gets it right.
@@trevorlambert4226 True, but the elbow pads weren't made of bulletproof armour back then either.
@@caseyaptinnes571 Still did plenty of damage at that speed, even if it had been bare.
I remember these days, when hockey had tough adult men lol.
Moose Knuckle Yes sir.
Moose Knuckle The NHL used to be awesome.
Shawn Michaels Ikr...money is the root of all evil.
That hit in the modern sissy NHL would be reviewed from every possible angle and mcsorley would get a 50 million game suspension.
aint that the truth..
As I'm making my way up the steps, and open the lounge door, yes lounge, just like a silly western the 'saloon door' squeaks open and a sitting old timer with a squeaky voice asks, "You know who that is?" Ya, he's an idiot." He answers "That's Behn Wilson" of the Philadelphia Flyers."
The old adage "He'd cut his grandma's throat, to make the team.", applies to this Wilson and his ilk.' Oh, he can skate and score too.' - ya everyone's afraid of him...when he's gonna randomly ram ya one.
@@truth7294 you owe me 3 minutes of my life back for that incomprehensible diatribe. Idiot
hit was totally late - in today league that be 20 games suspension

mcsorely was a bum from the start
i loved how the habs shut them down especially gretzky in the final
Too bad it wasn't Leafs vs Habs.
@Mr. MERCEDES 95 ...but nowhere near as funny as the Loser Leefs. lol
Who misses Bob Cole for the play by play? Bob Cole's voice was the best!
Jim Bic Jim Hughson is way better
he's still does games he's 84 and i agree the BEST of ALL time truly the greatest ever
Harry Neale was a pain in the ass
Jim Bic reminds me of my childhood for sure
MrPorsche91730 Or he’s just tougher.
Actually Cayuga Ontario to be precise, they're even tougher there
Bahaha
LMAO!!!
He didnt have his head down harry neil. Do you even watch the game. Gilmour got hit well after the pass and had his head up the whole time, Unreal.
Also to add to Steve Miller.... that's Bob Cole not Harry Neale.
@Steve Miller LOL STFU armchair fan tough guy.
It was a shot to Gilmour's head and he didn't have his head down, Harry is wrong on this. If it was Gretzky getting hit like that the LA bench would have cleared
Not only that - Gilmour no longer has the puck lol.
One reason Wendel Clark is on the top level of my all time Leaf favorites. Biggest heart in the game. Todd Gill was a rock as well.
When hockey was still good. You could stand up for your team and each team had a few tough guys.
Head was up, elbow to the head by a smelling salt goof, Clark didn't get saved either.
A Doubleu to be fair hockey was much different back then . McSorely would have been suspended for quite a while if this had happened today . And the players involved at the bench probably fined . Hockey was much better back then . Eye of the tiger in the background . The glory days , not this sissy league that calls itself the NHL today
2:03 Douggie would have gotten it a lot worse if he had his head down. Swerved away from that elbow at the last second.
2:18 Wendel Clark just skates over to Marty and DROPS!!! the gloves, Marked man.
Then the rocky music starts up. BOOM, this was the best hockey ever, I watched all the leafs playoffs run back in 92-94, nothing better.
"Somebody threw a crutch on the ice."
Hockey fans are the best!! Hands down!
Love playoff hockey
Wendel did great protecting his bro. Fair fight both ways/side.
I remember this series. A classic that the Leafs should have won. L.A. got their ass handed to them by Montreal in the finals.
Man, i remember watching Clark when i was a kid. Probably my favourite player ever.
Yes but A, Marty won the fight at the end, and B, the Kings won the war at the end of the game 7.
Yup, I think it read something like "The McSorry incident"
The series was fixed?? Really?? Why would this series be fixed in your eyes??
You think think the league wanted 2 Canadian teams in the final ? Not good for USA ratings, plus expansion in Florida in 1993-94. Need an American team in the final to create more interest in hockey down south, especially with Wayne Gretzky on the team. Why do you think he got traded to LA.
Nothing against Wayne Gretzky.
This is my opinion of course. As I lived in that generation.
I laughed when Mcsorty covers the camera lense with his hand to try and hide his damaged face/eye.. lmao 😄😄😄😄
McSorley did a great job...at blocking Clark's fist with his face.
Wiped Wendell's lipstick off with his knuckles.
McSorley won that fight. Count the punches. If we score that the way boxing matches are scored, McSorley would get the decision.
@@js09js09 You count damage, McSorley won but he really didnt bang up Clark at all.
Mcsorley beat his ass
He sure did, and it didn't even faze McSorley a bit!! Towards the end of that fight Mcsorley was still swinging while Clark was gassed and didn't want to fight anymore.
Hockey before the "Snowflakes" became fans and cried about the fighting.
Lol they cut it right before the guy in the pink shirt gave melrose the finger
He should be on the 10 dollar bill instead.
Clarke will always be the ultimate Leaf. Love Wendal
