Big fan of SMSL products. I have the SU-9 dac, and the sound color option is also implemented in it, with audible differences among all options. Cool stuff! I wonder how the sound compares against the Denafrips Ares II though...

I am currrently owned a Topping D30 Pro, I am looking forward for an upgrade, especially now that I know the D1SE offers 9 types of sound color to play around with, means it can probably last longer before I get bored with it lol. Btw. how does it sounds compared to the Denafrips Ares 2?
They aren't good, I have a SU9 and the other sound color profiles are bad. Roon DSP or MiniDSP SHD is way better.

Amazing that you picked all of these Dac’s they were my choice as well I personally went ahead and bought the topping D 70 S I think it’s totally amazing I have the Denafrapes Aries1 it is also very good but I prefer the topping much more focused and revealing
Ordered an smsl vmv d1se today for a secondary system. Currently have a topping d70s. Love the d70s. Sounds better than d90, imho. Will be seeing how this dac (d1se) stacks up against the d70s. Guessing that they’re going to be similar in tonality as both are tuned to be slightly warm with a natural, organic timbre. Apos is having certified sale right now. D70s for ~$550 and D1se for ~$610.

I'm thinking the same. I tried a Schiit DAC and absolutely hated it. Returned it in 1 week and took the $50 hit. Way too bright (some call revealing).

Ok... I've been listening to a lot of reviewers over the last year. I've really enjoyed it! It's such an interresting and diverse space to make one's way in and I get it, but I'm going to start taking you all to task. I have to. You all need to know where your blind spot is. And I have to say every single one of you's biggest blind spot is bluetooth. At this point money can BUY the highest fidelity in the most perfected room/environment or ear cup. It's subjective and flawed but so are recordings so you've reached that bottle neck. The bottle necks that still have room to expand are where the forefront really is. To me that means class D, bluetooth, streaming, and a few other smaller areas of audio. If you arent focused there, you're swimming in some pretty stagnant, albeit rich and evolving, pools. If you're doing it I hope you're mostly focused under 1000 for any component. There is a connection between the free market space and its competition that upwardly defines the laws of deminishing returns. It's not just a trickle down space.
But consider bluetooth. I have yet to hear a reviewer cover the absolute best way to listen via bluetooth. It's codec, dac, and amplifier (based on use case) to determine the industry standard. I have yet to hear a reviewer claim one route or other is the highest quality achievable via let's say LDAC RECIEVER> (X) DAC) > headphone ampifier/speaker amplifier as far as bluetooth is concerned.

Interesting that you reviewed this SMSL... For my very, very, very, *VERY* 1st DAC ever in pretending to be an exclusive vinyl Audiophile for over 40 years, I just now am trying their *BRAND NEW SMSL DO200 DAC!* For a person who has always completely DESPISED digital in any form, after running this in my primary system for several days now, I can honestly say, WOW! I have like somewhere in the neighbourhood of 6000-7000 FLAC files on my HDDs, so I figured, what the hell, maybe with all these new inexpensive, well reviewed DACs coming out, I should try one. So far, so good... And, it has the exact same 'Sound Color' profile as this one. It looks almost identical, except the DO200 is just shy of $500 on Amazon. BTW, it *does* have I2s!
If you get a chance and WANT to do so, I would frigg'n *LOVE* to hear your impressions of the DO200 since it is brand new and it is so reasonably priced. Since I know absolutely NOTHING about DACs, I would truly like to hear your thoughts on this new one.

JAY- Thanks for the detailed descriptions of the useful and highly differentiated DAC sound profiles and your fondness for the Rich3 and Tube3 settings. thanks for the heads up on the drawbacks and grain with volume changes in the pre-amp mode. Looks like this and some other SMSL Dacs are good ones. Wish me luck.
The two comparisons I am curious to hear about for the SMSL D1se are the Denafrips Ares II, and the Schiit Bifrost 2.

I have become a real fan of your reviews. You helped me relax into the idea of the KLH Model 5. Now I need your advice on the SMSL VMV D1SE vs the Denafrips. I intend to use the KLH Model 5 and after seeing videos with the D1SE and it's ease of use, various settings and obvious clarity without the sterile sound leads me to ask you: D1SE or Denafrips Ares II. You will save me a month of suffering by voicing your opinion. I love your work.

Isolation spikes are not for "looks". They are for sound quality. Especially if used in a desktop system where your speakers will resonate the desk that your DAC is sitting on.

Tube sound = rolled off high frequencies + a lot of second-order harmonic distortion :) Pretty easy to mimic with digital signal processing.
SMSL. Love it! I run an smsl amp for my garage setup to annoy the neighbors. Their gear rocks.

My washer is the loudest one I've ever heard and also it takes quite long to finish. Usually I only find time to do laundry when I get home in the evening often coinciding with listening to music. Been back into the HIFI audio bug now just before the most recent plague hit and thank GOD I did. Saved my sanity. Now,, about that SMSL DAC. You do sell it well. Even if "your not trying". I'm intrigued. Those filters are enticing. The whole "10 different DAC signatures" is a BIG selling point. The pre-out? Meh. The plastic knob, bleh. But the price and sound! Those are the two top most features ANY piece of audio equipment is judged on and in the SMSL's case,,,, nails it. I WANT IT.
PS: you're right. Follow these contest instructions... gotta say, not concise enough. I thought I had to go into the Samsung event and get involved in something, tried to sign up cuz I though that was the contest, couldn't sign up cuz it only takes ZIP codes..? this must be wrong.

Looked at their stuff love Samsung, we have their items where I work also But most of all I'm an audiophile myself. Don't have any dedicated music speakers but I have Martin Logan, marantz, svs, sunfire, monter cables, Sonos, Sony, and Samsung, sennheiser, creative labs, Aune, and Apple products just to name a few.
