Test run of new machine
www.walmart.com/ip/Brother-LX...
This was exactly what I needed. I just picked up the LX3817A to learn about sewing and work on smaller projects. You just make it look easy. I'm sure it will take me longer. :)
I got this machine for Christmas? Does it come with bobbins and needles?
The bobbin thread doesn't need to be pulled up when the quick set bobbin thread cutter is used. In fact the bobbin thread will be quite short and difficult to pull up so people often think the sewing machine is defective because the bobbin thread is so short when they try to pull it up. When a long bobbin tail is actually wanted for instance when needed to pull for gathers, then don't use the bobbin thread cutter so the bobbin thread will stay long. The quick set bobbin thread cutter is a nice feature on such an inexpensive sewing machine. Shout out to those reading this: don't use metal bobbins because they will wear out the bobbin case and also cause poor stitching. This machine was designed to sew with plastic bobbins. Walmart sells brother bobbins appropriate for this machine in-store for a moderate price.
Myra Thomas your right !
on this machine we dont have to pull the bobbin thread threw ..a big TY to you! 😊👍
Mine has decided that it can’t sew in tee shirt material. I was told to get a ball point needle. It still skips. It is like the top part doesn’t want to pull through it. My brother is ASD and high functioning. He needs a soft material on his to fix the nutrients for the patients in the hospital he works. He has sensory issues. The ball point works for like three stitch lines and then two will be crazy skipping stitches. Do you have an answer?
Karla Maxwell I don’t know if this helps but maybe putting a piece of paper under the t shirt may give it body. I did this when making a quilt . Thickness of computer paper.
@@dove1965 Your comment was a month ago, so what happened with sewing the tee shirt material? What Wanda said is a good idea. In addition to having a stabilizer (the computer paper ), try spray starching the area to be sewn, iron press it dry (press up and down to not stretch out the material), then the stiffened fabric will be easier to sew and will wash out before your brother wears it. When having stitching problems always re-thread the upper thread and the bobbin thread. Check if upper thread is catching on the spool pin or the spool itself AND always thread the upper thread tension disks while the presser foot is UP.
Youre correct. I've never used a bobin thread cutter, I'd rather do it with my shears to keep it where I like
I bought the same machine about 3 months ago. It is a great machine. Have had no problems with it that weren't user errors. If it unthreads on you, just make sure you have your needle down in the material before you start stitching. Ask me how I know that lol.
I just watched your new LX3817A video - nice to see you are still using it.
When people make a video on a sewing machine when they first get it and not a follow-up, I wonder if they are still satisfied with it.
So, thank you again!
Mmkk
Thank you for this video. I just bought mine today and am looking forward to trying this out. I can't wait to try a button hole...Thanks again!
Thank you for posting this video. I’ve been looking for a new sewing machine, because the one I have is old and always gives me problems. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on one due to the fact I hardly ever sew, so this is really helpful.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
I love listening to you talk lol I moved from tangi to Pennsylvania a couple years ago and it sounds like home :)
Lol thank you! I think you either love the accent or hate it. There’s no in between 😂
Just purchased this machine, am hoping I learn it quick you make it look so easy!❤️
You will be a pro in no time! Thanks for watching!
Can you do a video more up close for stringing the sewing machine? I am super new and just got this for my birthday. I'd love to have a up close play by play to watch as I string the brother sewing machine myself.
You're in luck! I did one just a couple of months ago! Hope it helps :) ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
I just bought the exact same machine! Your video was super informative!
Thank you! This might be even more helpful! ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
me to I got it today
Thank you for your video!! I just ordered this model and am so excited!
Yay! You'll enjoy it! I made a more detailed video at ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html if you want to check it out.
I love your videos, thank you for the advices, helped me a lot! I just bought one like yours just to make simple proyects at home.
You are so welcome! I think you'll like this one, I know I do. Thanks for watching!
Yesterday I made my first tote bag with the machine, following your instructions. The bag turned out great! I loved the sewing machine!
Thank you for this review! Very helpful!
Great video!! Informative and thorough for us newbies. Thank you! ☺️
You’re so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful!
Just got mines, yes. I see the need to be able to sew, repair and alter my own gear.
Is the foot metal? I can’t find mine anywhere
I just found this machine at Goodwill for $34.99! It didn’t come with anything other than a needle and a bobbin though. It’s a good little machine to start with or have as backup. I wish mine had all of the accessories. Oh, well! Thanks for the video 😄
You are so welcome! If you want accessories, the Brother website has everything and they’re not too expensive. Thanks for watching!
They don't really come with accessories, a couple feet and bobbins for $80+tax. You can buy the accessories and still save some money🎉
Hi, can you teach how to sew with elastic thread?
Just bought this machine today! Haven’t even opened the box. Tomorrow!
Have fun!
My husband bought me a sewing machine like that one in 2019...it's pretty cool.
The more I use it, the more I appreciate it's simplicity :)
@@momdoesstuff I'll be using it again God willing
I got one and love it.
I got a sewing machine in 2019 and I have NO IDEA HOW TO USE IT......so this video might help me
That is the one I got but idk if it is missing anything
Thanks for the info! Great video!
You're so welcome! If you want to see a more in depth video on this machine ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
I bought one a little newer and the tension and stitch size are on centimeters, up top and I turned the wrong one because the are not where singer has them and do not have them right yet! What a mess. Do you know the correct numbers?
Thank you your a life saver💕💕
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you
yes hi l have a question i bought this machine for my wife the lx3817a and she says it keeps breaking needles and she says it will not work with thick tread well what can she do to fix it?
thank you.
I am trying to help my Aunt get started with her machine. When you put the upper threading through the needle hole did you have a loop in your treading before you put in through the hole?
Try this ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
Thank you!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
I have just started and I have this machine I love your videos on this machine! You helped me learn how to sew! Now I need to adjust the stitch length to 2 how do I do that on this machine?
There’s not exactly a stitch length adjustment dial on this machine. Stitches 6-10 are all straight stitches, just different lengths. The higher the number the longer the stitch. Thanks for watching!
@momdoesstuff thank you for that info! I have this machine & had wondered the same on stitch length! 😊
Can you show how to do the different feet that come with it 🙂
click off or unscrew the foot (plastic hold) set upright the foot first with lever. choose foot according to job and set in directly under the same holder. push down the lever into into it.
I have 3 brothers but want another machine for camping it seem it will be great for camping…
mine always winds heavy on the bottom too!
I'm planning to buy this machine for hemming all of my jeans (will buy jeans needles also). Will this do the job? thanks
You will need needles made for sewing denim and other heavy fabrics. Also, slow way down when coming up on multiple layers like seams. Have fun😊
Im sorry I didn't see how you set the bobin in. i can't seem to figure where thread is hooked??? Thank you.🙏🙏
ua-cam.com/video/xAWRwBqHrWs/v-deo.html
How do you know when you can sew where does the white side knobs notch need to be and does the need need to be up or down

I am a beginner, so any tips on what you’ve learned about this machine (which I just bought) would be great!
Watching!

I am a beginner sewer and was just wondering what brand of needles can I use on this machine? Does it have to be Brother brand? Or does Schmetz brand work? Thanks!
Schmetz work fine. That's what I use
No, it does not have to be Brother brand. In fact, Brother branded needles are made by Organ. If you had a Brother needle and looked at the shank with a magnifier, you'd see Organ is imprinted there (along with the needle size).
You can buy a bulk of 100 Organ regular type needles (Sharps and Ball Points) from this online company for only $14 and Free shipping.
They won't be in plastic cases. Instead each pack of 10 needles are wrapped in foil paper like chewing gum wrappers then that is in a paper package. The needles are excellent quality.
www.ctsusa.com/_e/Household_Machine_Needles/product/ORGAN-15x1/15x1_HAx1_Organ_Needles_Sharp_Point_100pcs.htm
Another fine place to buy Organ needles is:
wawak.com which has many other sewing supplies at great prices and a flat rate shipping fee under $6. The Organ Quilting needles as Wawak calls them are actually Organ Heavy Material needles which are extra strong and have color coded shanks according to their size. www.wawak.com/Sewing/Needles/Home-Machine/organ-quilting-home-machine-needles-hlx5-10pack/?sku=MNR514
When buying needles online be certain you are ordering Home/Household needles with flat back shanks and appropriate for your project/thread/fabric and sewing machine.
How fast does this sew? I don't see a speed setting. Do you control the speed with the pedal?
Yes, it's controlled with the petal
Hi, do you think this machine would be ok to use for paper crafting?
It's stated in the owner's manual you can use with paper.
Very helpful.
Thank you!
What hole does the bobbin yarn go through? That’s the only part I can’t seem to get
If you are referring to loading a bobbin with thread: each bobbin flange has one tiny hole. It doesn't matter which one you use. Be sure to put the thread through the hole from inside the flange going up and out through the top of the flange. Leave a 6 inch thread tail to hold onto when first winding the bobbin, wind slowly, when there's a full layer of thread on the bobbin stem, stop winding for a minute to snip off the thread tail flush to the bobbin flange. Then continue winding slowly as much thread as you need, except don't over fill the bobbin. Thread should NOT be filled to the very edge of the flanges and especially should not bulge out past the flanges.
Hello I’m just seeing this video and just orders my brother sewing machine. Does it matter what brand of thread I purchase to place on top of the machine?
This video might answer your question ua-cam.com/video/ZZy3gO53204/v-deo.html
And this is to the whole playlist about the Brother LX3817. You might enjoy watching these while you wait for your new machine. ua-cam.com/play/PLZocgsi1E8it-0N2czs-dO5113Za5zWmM.html
Have fun!
How to change the needle
Someone is selling one on Offer up in my area for $25 dollars I'm new to learning to sew and trying to figure out if this is a good fit for me. Thank you for your review!
Oh, wow, can't go wrong at that price! I made a more in depth video on how to thread the machine if you need it at ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html&lc=UgwHVWHoKHP7G5h_Ky14AaABAg
@@momdoesstuff Thank You gonna watch that :)
Thinking about buying this one, I'm a beginner 😮
I think it’s a perfect starter machine. In fact, I just bought my sweet daughter-in-law one for her birthday ☺️
@momdoesstuff ok cool ! My bday is in March! I receive a bday gift from my brother so I can purchase it...Thx! You are a pleasant Lady!
My bobbin still gathers at time anything I can do ? Also my thread comes out. Can you get closer in videos they are hard to see what you are doing. Thanks
I made this one. It gets closer ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
I need to know where the needle lock is please
This video is a lot more in depth. try this :) ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
Hai, I am also having this same machine. The straight-line stitch is not working.
Oh, I'm so sorry you are having trouble. This video might be more helpful ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
Why does my machine eat my fabric it jams into the bobbin, what am I doing wrong? I use a lot of poly knit fabric
You might be trying to sew too close to the edge of your fabric. Make sure that the edges are secured on the edges by the pressure foot. This video is a little more in depth ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
Sounds like a LOUD Machine!
Lol, it's not the quietest one, for sure! But, not too bad for the price :)
It's really not that bad, from someone who owns this machine. I sew at night in the room next to my sleeping husband and two sleeping toddlers, and never have an issue 🤷
I have one question. After the top and bottom are treaded.....do you tie them together or just put them off the back and let it rip?
You don't have to tie them. This video might help some ua-cam.com/video/9Tw9op4bGcU/v-deo.html
@@momdoesstuff thanks lady. I asked that question before I tried to run it.😆
Oh wow that is a gorgeous sewing machine! Sadly, I lost both my Singer Quantum Stylist and my Brother Project Runway when a tree fell on our house last year. I preferred my Brother to the more expensive Singer. I've been looking for a cheaper machine now that I'm on disability. I'm very interested in this one! I'll have to save up for it. Thanks for your review!
Thanks so much for your comment! I've always loved a Brother myself! I really think this is a great machine!
I can see where your putting the thread, etc
Try this one ua-cam.com/video/0GZ9KDDkB-I/v-deo.html
I have sewing machine just like that can you please tell me what kind of thread you use
What number is that
I used Aurifil 50 weight thread in the video, but you and use any kind. Just try several brands and you'll find one that just seems to work better for you and your particular machine.
Does this have an appliqué stitch?
It has a zig zag stitch. That's what I use.
I just got mine yesterday
Congratulations! I made a much more in depth video about threading the machine if you're interested ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
If anything if ur interested in continuing to make videos I would love if u could make a video on how to make different types of stitches and use the machine.. I’ve never used a machine before and I’m struggling the technique to just sewing material together lol
@@brianmartines207 I think that's a wonderful idea. I'll see what I can come up with!
Can you do an overcast stitch with this machine?
Well, you can zig zag along the edge, but it’s not going to look like a serged hem.
Unable to remove bobbin cover what am I doing wrong.
ua-cam.com/video/xAWRwBqHrWs/v-deo.html
How to tie off when done
You can just take a reverse stitch or two and clip the threads
How do I change the needle position?
Try this ua-cam.com/video/JRXSBM97hS0/v-deo.html
and this ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
I have the same machine what bobbin do you use.
I use the plastic SA156
Thank you
Hello mam! That is can sewing jean?
With a denim needle I believe it would sew jeans.
Another youtuber did a video on it and it was the original needle and sewn throw like 8 pieces of jeans layered
I just purchased the LX3817G online at Walmart for $76 for my granddaughter. It looks very similar to the LX3817A, but the description for the "G" showed there is a LED light. The LX3817A description didn't mention a light but you did in your video. Is the light adequate? I love the look of the "A" (color and hearts) rather than the "G" (gray and lines) model. Thank you.
The LX3817A does have a built in LED light, but more light is always welcome. I use a goose neck LED lamp that I can position to any spot I need on my work even when pinning etc. This one is a good price and especially nice with a long neck, USB port and dimming capable.

It's my first time ever.. the way you did I couldn't understand 😢
I'm so sorry! This was one of my first videos :( This one might be more helpful. ua-cam.com/video/0GZ9KDDkB-I/v-deo.html
Can I slow the speed down
The only way to control speed is with the foot pedal. Less pressure, less speed
Mine is feeling like its tight and threads are going crazy under neigh
I made another video that's more in depth on how to thread. This might help some ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
You shouldn't be using cross-wound thread on that vertical bobbin holder. It is designed to come off the top of the spools as you see on sergers. The thread can twist up to 20 times before it reaches the bobbin and this can cause some issues. See this video for more information: ua-cam.com/video/I1jq9QoP9jg/v-deo.html
Yes, I was just using the thread I had on hand :( My usual machine has a horizontal thread holder. Thank you for helping out!
What is the best tension number for the top and bottom. Mine keeps gathering on it. And on the bobbin do you put the needle back down to catch it or does it stay in front after its been cut ?
This might be more helpful ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html
My bottom stitch is giving me a hard time ahhh i wish i had someone yo help me
Could be a tension issue. Check out tension issues here on YT...hope that helps. Usually just a number off on your tension dial.
Quiero una maquina
Porfavor si alguien tiene la bondad
😢🙏😭
De verdad que en este momento ni trabajo tengo.
What size bobbin can this use? I can't find any for this particular machine on amazon. I'm a newbie.
If you haven't found bobbins yet or need more, if you have a local Walmart then it will have genuine Brother bobbins that are appropriate for most all Brother sewing machines (and of course especially this machine). They are high quality bobbins yet very economical at under $4 for eight bobbins (which is half the price for the same bobbins at brother.com) You can always tell which bobbins are genuine brother bobbins because there is a very tiny b on one of the flanges (sides), may need a magnifier to see it. www.walmart.com/ip/Brother-SABOBBIN-8-Piece-Bobbin-Pack-for-Most-Brother-Sewing-Machines-Clear/19231652

This machine is $165 right now at Walmart online! 😳
Oh, my goodness!
You have to be careful. Walmart has a lot of people on their site they let sell to us and it is not Walmart prices or service.
It is still just 76 dollars. You must of hit one of those price gougers. I just looked and found the one Walmart sells.
I bougth for 125 box in ebay 😀
Can see what your doing! For someone who has no clue how to use this machine need to see!

Christy Mabry good afternoon I'm having trouble with the tension. Every time I'm trying to sew my fabric the threads are very loose. I set my tension for 5 and still the threads loose
I guess you don't believe in close-ups. Or did you even think about the people with not so good vision.
look at another video don't be mean.
I'm so sorry :( this newer video has close up and more indepth tutorials. This one was just a box opener type thing. ua-cam.com/video/G4HkjuiF3AM/v-deo.html

Mines didn’t work and it was new damn you Walmart
If you've purchased your sewing machine from Walmart in the past 90 days and still have its box and other contents plus proof of payment, then return it to your local Walmart.
Mine keep taking the fabric and getting stuck and won't stay threaded. I want to return it, but it was a gift...
@@agroves1995 There are a few common reasons with any sewing machine why the fabric gets stuck and why the needle unthreads. Is it unthreading at the needle? Look at the thread to see if it's frayed. If so, the thread may be too thick for the size of the needle's eye or the eye could have a tiny burr that is cutting the thread. If the thread is not frayed and only has slipped out of the needle then at the end of stitching, the needle and uptake lever need to be at their highest before removing the fabric. You will know they are at their highest when the grove on the side of the handwheel is aligned with the side seam of the sewing machine. Do that before removing the fabric and make sure the needle's thread tail is pulled out about 4 inches long before it's cut. If you use the thread cutter on the front of the face plate then the thread will be the right length. Then when beginning to sew, hold the thread tail down. Concerning the fabric getting stuck, is the fabric fluffy , fuzzy, stretchy or slippery. If so then something between the feed dogs and the fabric is needed such as tear away stabilizer or even tissue gift wrapping paper. If there's threads stuck, especially if you can see three threads then that is also caused by the thread uptake lever/or the needle not being at their highest before attempting to remove the fabric. Gently rock the handwheel very very slightly back and forth to get the threads to release. Otherwise, always always turn the handwheel toward you and not away from you as that will cause thread to get caught which pulls the fabric down to get stuck as well. Were you given a gift receipt for the sewing machine? How long has it been since it was purchased? Got the its box?
"Mines "?!? 😒
How about an English class & a manners book instead of a sewing machine... 😳smh
agroves1995 😂👌🏾 I feel that
Too quick and not detailed enough for beginners
I'm sorry! I really just meant this to be a quick view of the machine, not an instructional video. Maybe I should do a series on beginner sewing? Would that be helpful?
