Xevailo I haven't played bass since high school, and between this video and that episode of Rick and Morty, I couldn't help but order a new bass guitar...it's arriving this weekend and can't wait to start playing again!
NEW VIDEO! Nine Inch Nails - 'Hurt' - solo bass arrangement! A few weeks ago I asked everyone on Facebook which song they'd like to see covered next and this one received the most votes, by far! So, here it is - I really hope you enjoy this one! Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt' - Solo Bass Cover by Zander Zon
Have been earing this for years, and I always get goosebumps when I hear it. It is probably the most beautiful bass solo I have ever heard in my life. As a bass player, I hope I can be half as good as you are, someday.
Been playing this over and over for like 30 minutes and although I don't know the song itself the way you play makes it sound so beautiful and emotional haha great job
every time i check in to see what new covers or song you have done. i am just blown away buy the progress you make each time. i think this is one of my favorite cover songs out there
Got both your albums which are stellar, but I do love it when you cover something known with your own arrangement, often turn out better than the song itself!
I just now noticed after being a fan for a few months that you are actually able to get a tonal shift when you palm mute piccolo bass strings...that's pretty awesome!
I've been a Bassist for 26 years in a variety of roles (Original & Cover Bands and Session/For-Hire Gigs for both Studio Recording and Live Radio & Internet performances) and surprising, *am not* a fan of the VAST MAJORITY of "Bass Covers of Famous/Classic Rock" and/or Classical Pieces such as Cello Pieces on Electric Bass... although the latter can work for me if arraigned "correctly" and not overplaying the piece with "Whiz-Bang!" technique and effects. ...that being said, your cover of "Hurt" is a beautifully-played piece that still manages to hold onto the melancholy of the original song and certainly isn't a cover full of "Technique for Technique's Sake" which is so very pervasive within the genre of "Solo Bass Covers". So *absolutely* well-done & kudos to you, beautiful looking-and-sounding Zon "Vinny" Bass, and is there anything we should know if trying to reproduce your arraignment besides Piccolo Strings? (i.e. Altered Tuning?)
+Ian Perge Thanks for your kind words, Ian. I certainly don't create music with the intention of showing off, rather to express myself and musical ideas. So I appreciate you noticing that, especially with your massive experience on the instrument. To answer your question, yes I do use altered tunings. For 'Hurt', I'm tuned: A, E, C, E
I'm amazed. I saw you on notreble, a few hours ago, and I've been watching your videos since. I'm really blown away. Amazing job! I can't wait to see what other songs you do!
More of the Johnny Cash version here, but still great nonetheless. I always see debates as to which is superior to another but I think both versions are awesome. The original NIN version gives a feeling of someone on a suicidal course and fits the theme of the whole Downward Spiral perfectly as a closer to the album. On the other hand, Cash's version is more of an old man lamenting over his whole life knowing most of it is over and just looking at past mistakes and what he could have done differently. Even the arrangements musically are both set up perfectly akin to these mindsets. The NIN version has discordant and out of tune sounding guitars to give a feeling angst and despair and the changes and problems you go through when you are at the age Reznor was when he wrote that song, while Johnny's version features clean, in-tune acoustic guitar with his sullen vocals carrying the weight of the song. Both are masterpieces in their own regard, in my opinion.
Unbelievable... just when you think you've heard it all, you start pulling stuff out of that bass I've never heard before. Sounds like a duo playing this.
I'm currently on a journey to learn bass....damn this is freaking very very very good...epic love the way you play...hope to one day play like you!!! Awesome stuff!!!!
Zander Zon, man! I just got to know your channel, through Charie and Davie and, man! I'm enjoying it so much! You a re way to talented! By the way, I like the way you respect the calm atmosphere of this song. Thank you for showing me music I could never imagine a bass could provide. This is so beautiful! Cheers from Brasil!
Are you originally a bassist? Your technique and intricacies suggest a talented guitarist who felt they would be able to create more beauty on a bass. Not a putdown bassist joke, you just play like no other bassist I've ever seen
Thanks to everyone for such kind words. Very much appreciated!
No thank you! you're an amazing artist!
Can you cover Schism by Tool?
You inspire me so much

"Hey what are you in for ?" - "Everything."
"He is not coming back, is he?"
"no"

This is fantastic. You have wonderful technique. Your technique doesn't overshadow the melody and phrasing, but rather supports it. Nicely done.
Man that was the best thing I've heard on bass in a long time.
Wish I had a third of that talent.
This cover makes me run for my guitar. So inspiring.
Every time I watch you play this fine bass I'm so impressed. I've got to get my fingers on a Zon
