- If I didn’t know any better, you could convince me that Mortal Shell is another, smaller entry into the Dark Souls series with minor tweaks to its established formula, for better or worse. It knows exactly what it’s trying to do, and it does a lot of the things it takes from the Souls series really well.
That famous feeling of satisfaction is still there when you finally kill a boss or get past a hard section, and the changes to gameplay, especially its impressive hardening system, are mostly for the better. Its influences, though, are always in the forefront, making it difficult to look past its flaws. Mortal Shell has a lot of things that allow it to be notable in its own right, but it makes it hard to forget that it’s taking from a giant whose shadow it never truly escapes.
This review sounds contradictory to me: "it's good, but it's bad"; "it's bad, but it's good".
The game was never meant to reinventing the Soulsborne wheel and the creators have said since the beginning they are souls fans creating a game for souls fans....so why complaining about the clear similarities?
Go listen to fightincowboy for a proper impression of the game.

You never really gave a straight answer. You'd bash the mechanics then flip the script and say you loved the mechanic you had just bashed. You pulled to many punches or you don't know what you want.
All you need to know- 4 shells total, 8-10 hours to complete game. Wait until Christmas for it to be like 10 bucks unless you just really like how the game looks I guess.

I wish it had co-op in m 60 yrs old and have a the reflexes of a snail! I love the souls games but I do need help with some of the tougher bosses! And before you say get good I have been gaming since pong and games were much harder back then than they are now! It's a age thing! LOL

I’m 53 and love games! Yes pong was my first game. lol. I’ve fell in love with the Souls games. But wow they are brutal. This game looks far better than most. From such a small Dev team. A bit of a “love letter” to Dark Souls. And I’m cool with that. And it’s at a budget price!
I think there is a new souls game that does have co op coming up, forget the game tho.

Dark souls doesn't require super powers
An important thing to keep in mind going into this is that this is NOT from a large or even a small developer company.
The entire game was made by only 2 people! So for that alone should get a few passes. It looks quite impressive for a 2 person operation.
This review feels weird to me. Sounds like your only real shortcoming is that you find Dark Souls to be better, and that a couple of bosses were easier than others.
Another thing that bothered me about your review is you never once mentioned this game is only $29.99! So 7 bosses doesn't seem like a knock on a game that's less than half price of the ones you were comparing it to when they launched.

Don’t understand why he made so many comparisons to Dark Souls while completely omitting the difference in size (& funding) of the team/company that produced it along with it’s retail price... as if it just wasn’t relevant information, which is certainly not the case. Seems a bit unfair & even careless (esp when compared to almost every other review atm) 🤷♂️
LOL the devs are abt 15 ppl who just wanted to make souls like ppl would enjoy. They needed to make a focused and polished product with the budget they had. Comparing them to a AAA studio isnt fare.

SOUL CRUSHER lol no , as he said its not up to the scale of dark souls. It operates on a much smaller scale than dark souls , and the developers have focused themselves on delivering a refined experience. I am sure people will have new found appreciation once lore and other elements are discovered and combat is experimented upon. As it’s not as fully fleshed , no one is gonna give it a 10/10, but it’s gonna scratch that itch souls fans have been craving for.

For a company composed of 15 devs who made this game, they made a good try and that seems to be a success in my eyes.

I don't understand why people shit on this game for being like dark souls. Dark souls uses a formula that works. When another game uses that formula we should say, does this game do a good job at adopting the formula we love, not wow it's a copy and it sucks

Let’s not forget, this game isn’t a triple A title. I’m certain that the developers will see how this game does and completely expand and go further on the next one. Looks very well done though, I will be buying it.
Soulslike is an accomplishment but Mortal Shell does enough and more to hold its own imo.

This will be my first attempt at this genre. Wish me luck! One thing I don't like though, is how enemy attacks track your movement. They don't seem to whiff very often. What's the point of a dodge when the a.i. can track you and hit you anyway?
UPDATE: After watching the review, maybe I won't get it after all.
The enemies kinda have to track your movements to some extent due to the nature of the gameplay. The animations have to be long to let the player know an attack is coming, but that means that if they didn't track at all, they'd be way too easy to dodge. This is why you'll see the bosses in these games spin around like they're on a pivot.
As for this specific game, I'd advise you to check out some other reviews as well; this one seems to be particularly negative. Keep in mind this game is only $30. Hope this helps :D
If enemies' attacks don't track you, you wouldn't even need to dodge at all, just circle around them and they can never hit you.

Good game. Took me ages to get into though. Once I'd unlocked a few skills and weapons it improved (for me anyway). Item descriptions are often unreadable; grey writing on a black background using a swirly font. Maybe I need new glasses or a better TV. Familiarity mechanic is initially confusing but handy once you've increasd it :)
So now every platformer is a mario game hiding from it’s shadow? This game is amazing. The fighting mechanics are great. The design and environments are awesome. It is absolutely inspired by the soul series, but it’s not, it has its own personality and it is amazing.
Love how there was a boss spoiler right as soon as the video started. I really enjoyed having that ruined for me.
I'm still waiting for the next Bloodborne or Dark Souls game where you can cut off limbs like in Surge. I know Surge was inspired by the Souls games but imagine targeting limbs and cutting them off in BB2 or DS 4 and using them for magic and weapons and stuff. Drooling.

For some reason your comment reminded me of an old PC game called Die By The Sword where you would control your sword arm with the keypad (8 directions) and you would cut through body parts exactly as you swung.
*edit* In retrospect, a mouse would've been more suited for this.

To me it feels like it’s on the same level as Code Vein. In that sense: I really wish it had a minimap. No map is only appropriate for games with better and more connected level design.
I gotta say I'm not a souls fan, I gave up on Dark Souls 3, I almost beat sekiro but I quit during the fight with owl since I got bored due to the tedious bosses and mini bosses and Bloodbourne is actually superior to all those games, so imagine my suprise when I played this game, the dodgeing is reliable and if you beat the game and try to go for the shell less run in new game+ you'll have all the stamina you need to dodge and counter bosses attacks, this is literally the most balanced souls like game I ever played, so was Bloodbourne until the dlc came out............ But anyway this game really impressed me, it's tough but fair if you die then it was more likely your fault, I can't say the same thing about the dark Souls series and sekiro
Bloodborne was my first Soulslike game and I gotta say everything in it is fair even the DLC I guess you never got the hand of the combat cause once you go into dlc at that point is actually easy but with a little challenge even more if you are overlevel like I was lol currently going thru DS and although I find it a lot different and difficult than bloodborne!, I dig it and I know if I stick to it I’m a become a god like I did with bloodborne! Is all about mastering the controls with this games and the combat system
In Souls games and Bloodborne everytime you die it's your fault. Yeah some bosses and enemies may be bullshit but the combat in those games is MILES better and more responsive. Mortal Shell combat is broken and overall developed poorly. I cant even get through trying to beat Hadern for the chisel and hammer because he is broken bullshit. I also feel like the s are horrendous and non existent. It's like you have sandbags for feet.
@@citizenerased174 depends what dark Souls your talking about, I have no issue with bloodbourne but in dark souls 1 pffffft Hahahahaha, remember if you swing your weapon it always hits the wall even if you weren't aiming at it, remember that enemies can actually still come after you during a boss fight and somehow cross the most , that game was flawed whether people see it or not
@@boxerheadninja4281 Ds1 combat has its major crap moments but it is still way better than Mortal Shell. I never once got so frustrated with Ds1 combat like I have with Mortal Shell. Ds3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro all have fluid combat though. I totally get it's a small indie team that made this but damn man it's just not for me.
It’s fun, but way too short and not much upgrading or variety. But for a small team it’s good. I came in with really high expectations though.

At first I didn’t like the combat but after I learn how to harden. I realize how fun is can be. I learn how to cheese some enemies by two hits without moving. Stab, harden and wait until enemy attack and boom dead. Game 7/10
The game came out today, no way anyone has played this enough to properly review it. Said people rush through games to put out a half hearted review.
I just got the souls games and I can't wait to play them on a stream. I'll put this one on the list as well. Great review.

This review is a bit odd to me. Beat the game today, love it. Despite only 4 shells and 4 weapons, the combat variety felt just as diverse as Dark souls 3 to me, maybe even more because of how switchable and ez it was. The harden mechanic is awesome and parrying is very balanced. I like the open world choice of temples more than linearity of dark souls. My only complaints for the entire game are 1, the game is too short (beat the game in 13 hours and explored pretty much everything, however this is totally forgivable since it is an indie dev team and also their first title with likely a smaller budget) and 2, the game is too easy after the first temple due to slow enemies. This is the only actual issue with the game I see. Every enemy in the game, including the bosses, walk slowly so you can dive in and out with heavy attacks. Beat half the bosses on my first try and never took me more than 4 tries to beat any boss. If they refined to rolling to be more precise in their next game and make enemies faster and have longer combos then imo the game would be spectacular. If cold symmetry's next game can be as long as a dark souls game with improved enemy speeds then in my honest opinion dark souls has huge competition. I loved this game

This game seems like a good fit for players who don’t quite have the skill required to complete a Souls game but still feels like a Souls game. I’m picking it up because the last two games I’ve played were Ghost of Tsushima and Paper Mario lol, which are not exactly challenging

Demon Intellect I’ve completed them all multiple times, plus both Nioh games. So I guess I’ll find out for myself if it’s tougher. I’ve been going through it so far, and there are already a couple mechanics that make it feel a little more forgiving. I’m enjoying it so far

Demon Intellect well I guess it’s just as many say: difficulty is subjective. Than again I don’t know how far in the game I’m in but I put in little over a dozen hours in, and not much has stumped me so far. I’ll see what the rest of the game has in store. I’m loving it so far though.

You don't know why you spent so much more time fighting armies of grunts instead of bosses? Probably because there are way more grunts to fight that bosses. Just guessing.

My two least favorite genres are souls-likes and rogue-likes. I don’t mind challenge in a game, but I don’t like spending what little gaming time I have continually getting killed and starting over.

Also an epic store exclusive. Hard pass from me. Finding new armor and weapons is literally like half the reason people like Soulsborne games. How are you gonna make a Dark Souls clone and then completely miss one of the core aspects that makes it what it is? This game looks more like a tech demo than an actual finished game.
Going by the comments I think people appreciate the effort that was put into making this game and are willing to make up their own minds and from what I have heard and read it seems like a good game not for everyone but well worth 30 bucks.

Nioh has better combat but from is best at most other things
@@punchforpound2808 both nioh 1 and 2 have much better combat yeah. 2 is more refined than 1 of course being sequel but they are both great but also addicting which can be bad.
Ive spent about 2000 hours on nioh 1(i bought it day 1 on ps4) and i feel like i let other games languish because the combat loop and depth of gameplay is so good. I mostly just help other players at this point after beating way of the nioh(ng+5) and stopping at around abyss level 100, but i still cant get enough. Ive played nioh 2s alphas and betas as well but i havent bought the game proper yet. Waiting for a cheap deal along with dlc cause im strapped for cash right now.
Speaking of ninja gaiden, i want a trilogy remaster collection for ps5 at 4k 60...i kinda need it at this point lol. Ive beaten the original xbox and 360 versions (ng1 not black, and ng2) and the sigma ps3 versions of 1 and 2 as well as 3 razors edge cause fuck vanilla 3. But it would be best to have a definitive edition on modern platforms so more people can play team ninjas original classic action series

@@MrInuhanyou123 Nioh 1 and 2 are great games but I literally got through a little half way on both games and stopped because of how cheap the bosses got. Most bosses use cheap tactics and cheat. The thing about Fromsoft games is that if you die it's your fault and most bosses(with the exception of Laurence and a few others) arent cheap cheating bastards.
@@citizenerased174 cheap tactics? I dont really know how that could be. Gotta memorize their patterns. Unlike something like dark eater midr in dks3 which just is a garbage boss which has ridiculous hitboxes and spams huge aoe fire/laser attacks that are unavoidable for example, i could beat every nioh boss with proper analysis of them and countering well.

they just to optimize it, for an rtx 2080 it shouldn't be hard to get a stable above 70 fps on ultra 2k. Thats all i have to say

Well I think you missed the point here sir. It is not about what this game have similar to dark souls, it's a souls like game, we already know the similarities. It is about what it have to offer on its own. Yes the atmosphere is dark, as is the story and the characters, but I personal found a new, singular touch to it. The same goes for the combat system, which while not being completely new, have it's own system and rythm.
Of all the souls like game I've played in the last couple of years, this one is one of my favorite. While undeniably inspired from dark souls (which the devs didn't hide at all, and even said) it is also new in a lot of ways. And as others said in the comments, it is only $30... which you never mentioned.
If I had to take anything from what you said in the video it would roughly translate to: "It's a souls like game, but shorter... Dark souls is better....."
Which doesn't feel quite right for a review.
For the price, the new and personal touch they quite successfully narrowed for their game along with the fact that it is a small company... It is a really good surprise for me personally.

The game is indie and was developed by only a handful of people. And it only costs 29 or 30 dollars. This review is imbalance and no consideration at all. This game is waaay better than many AAA games out there that costs 60 bucks. Looks better than DS too because it uses the unreal engine. 7 although a good score is still very low. Many AAA developers are in it for the money. These guys made a game that gamers can truly enjoy. Even casuals can finish this game with ease and a good entry to the genre. While sadists (aka Souls fans) will like it for the environment and decent challenge.
If I hear the phrase "souls like" again I'm gonna throw up

This review is very harsh... unnecessarily so
Mentioning things like 15 hour experience with only 7 bosses but didn’t mention it was a $30 game. Complaining how you spent most of your time killing grunts and less time on bosses... just like all Souls then, the game it’s aping.
Which follows onto the next point you made about how DS does it better so basically why bother with this? Again, the devs clearly stated it’s a souls clone, being massive Souls fans themselves. So it’s basically fan service with a twist on the formula in the form of Hardening for blocking etc.
It doesn’t seem to do anything wrong, bar maybe a few animations and overall fluidity compared to DS... but for a handful of devs to create this polished product, looking very slick in Unreal Engine 4 (which was also not mentioned I don’t think) in my opinion deserves a lot more praise
But each to their own. Great channel but a lot of reviews this past while have been wayyy off, by not mentioning basic things and not giving context to others, therefore giving the viewer a negative view of the game through no fault of their own

Poor review
Finished it today and agreed for the most parts. Me for my part I am tired of medievil postapocalyptic settings. That's why I lost interest in Fromsoftware games. From all Soulslikes I found Mortel Shell one of the weakest. Asterigos, Steelrising, Ashen, Hellpoint, all were much better in my eyes.

I think the game is pretty bad. I like some things but the combat is broken. There are numerous times I try to dodge with full stamina and i just end up standing there getting hit. The tracking enemies use is bullshit and the hitboxes are way off sometimes. Overall it just feels janky and unresponsive. I understand it's a small dev team but it's just not good.

Nioh 2 is way beter then this game
