I remember watching a video of Fr Pavlos defending the divinity of Christ with Catholics priests on Oprah and I was so impressed with him. Then I later learned he resigned as Metropolitan due to illness. I wonder if he is still alive. God bless this Father. I’m grateful I came across these videos. I am not a Cathecuman yet although I really want to be. Hopefully soon I can find a home Church and spiritual father that will guide me. God bless all.
I don't think people really realize just how much evil Arianism spawned, and continues to spawn. It spawned the Great Schism, but it also was what Muhammad encountered, and it is Arianism that the Quran talks about when it mentions Christianity. There is a good chance that, had Arianism not existed, neither would Islam, as the Arabs would likely have been shown the true gospel before it could sprout up. And now it is being revived, as some Protestants are starting to believe in this heresy once more! We must pray for our world, brothers and sisters.
I just ran across this series the other day. Must say I really respect what you were doing with these talks, and hope they were aired on TV many times.
Please put more videos out. The Catholic Church is a mess. I Pray The Lord will help convert many back to Orthodoxy. I saw you on a clip defending Our Lord in Oprah's audience. Thank you for your guts, zeal and wisdom.

The Latin Church is eating itself alive. Is it like the Beast devouring Babylon? I love that, that the icons are windows to paradise. They are Holy photographs.
@@johnpauloprey5864 No, they invented the filioque, and have it in their creed, but melkites are under the Pope yet only need to use original creed. This is the same as how Russians and Greeks have a spat yet church continues as normal.
I grew up a rebel protestant addicted to living off rage, lust, and rock and roll and I spat at my coerced gentrification amway cult building religion called protestantism because God seemed to never answer my prayers and when I discovered what orthodoxy was, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I've seen. I still struggle with vendetta and covetousness. I have accidentally bothered or aggravated the few orthodox people I've met because my interest in it seems satirical to them and I feel sometimes so demonized that I don't even know if I'm a false prophet or a Simon Magus, so I avoid going to a church. There's been signs in my life about orthodoxy before I knew what it was. I never felt hate towards it like I did my protestant religion. I was so obscure even from youth and I didn't even know I was sleeping on the grass of an orthodox church for a few minutes to a couple staggered hours at a time on my morning journey itinerary and wondered why I didn't wake up too cold and hating God as usual. I have other very ironic almost unbelievable stories. I see this ortho church now on my way to work Wednesdays and they wouldn't understand how eager I would be to help them clean their unkempt property with sticks and weeds for a blessing on some prayers because my country and especially region here in USA is excruciatingly judgemental on materialistic external statuses. I grew up vexatiously poor and spat upon by all demographics here. The combination of the chants and the hospitality Jesus's earthly family would have extended to a dirty hate filled hypocrite like me breaks my heart and makes even an ogre nephilim like me cry if I think about it long enough. It's the most beautiful culture there is. I am very tormented aspergers syndrome person because I am dealing with a vendetta over a rival male concerning an ex lover I prayed for heavy eons about and I am addicted to massive amounts of marijuana and caffeine to try and handle the potential nausea of overworking and depression and jealously of middle class people, so I think I may have demonic issues and I am trying to get this Esaul and Jacob and Laban feud dealt with hopefully resolved like the David and Abigail story soon so I can move on . I cast too many words of the lord behind me but I am praying for the favor to humble this very wicked person but I am also guilty of the same. Nonetheless, I have never did what he did, so I pray I can still have God's favor ☦🛐
I’m not an orthodox Christian but I’ve always wondered why don’t the Orthodox go to the Catholic Church under the label Eastern Catholic? In other words what are the main differences between Orthodox and Eastern Catholic on a religious belief perspective? I saw Father Pavlos on the Oprah show and as a Catholic I was in awe the way he defended our faith and thank you so much for your time today and Christos Anesti.
The Orthodox Church is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. The so-called “Catholic Church” that is centered in the Vatican is a heretical body that went into schism in the latter part of the first millennium and the earlier part of the second millennium.
Arianism caught the attention of Emperor Constantine. Fearing that the church's discord might fracture the empire, he called the Council of Nicaea (325), attended by 318 bishops, to resolve the situation. After dramatic debates, the vast majority stood with Alexander and condemned Arianism.
I hope Despota is well to this day (for those who don't know he later became metropolitan) this video has helped one of my roman Catholic friends become Orthodox and join the true Church of Christ
There is a God given day coming, where He will finally put an end to all of satans delusion faiths/religions and the 35 thousand heretical Christian denominations in order that "the Church that the gates of hell will never prevail against", will rule the whole earth. What were we taught to pray daily by Christ? "Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven." Glory be to our Sovereign Lord. Amen! Thankyou for your very well learned presentation/explanation Father and many blessings to you, family and spiritual children. ❤

Do you have a recording of his appearance on Oprah, when he defended Orthodoxy against Catholic and Protestant priests? Regarding Scorsese's film about Christ.
Hello, at approximately 8:52 Fr. Pavlos mentions something about starting a series of programs about the history of the Orthodox church. Was that series ever created? And if so, where can I view it on UA-cam/internet. PS how is Fr. Pavlos doing these days?
Unfortunately, Fr. Pavlos, now Metropolitan Pavlos of America (emeritus) never got a chance to do this series. But if you search our channel you will find that we have many programs in that topic, and in English. Thank you for your interest. We appreciate you.
Interesting! Never heard that the Franks did not convert from Arianism to (Latin) Roman Catholicism. I love the idea of gaining from direct experience of previous religious people.
From 38 AD to 1054 there was one church under the Roman Empire with 5 patriarchate’s. The patriarchate of Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria. The capital of the Roman Empire moved from Rome to Constantinople in AD 330. All 5 of the patriarchs had the same authority. The first Christian heresy was Arianism, which the franks (German speaking people) believed in and were in schism with the one true church of the Roman Empire. The Frank’s were always confronting the Roman’s in the West. Eventually the Frank’s took control of Rome and ousted the patriarch of Rome, and then replaced him with a frank pope, who was not in communion with the one true church (present day Orthodox Church). This is the start of further controversies and added dogmas that would eventually come about in Rome and lead to the schism of 1054. Orthodoxy is the original church that has never changed in 2000 years. Δόξα θεός ☦️☦️☦️.
Trying to enter the Church, trapped in the Latin Rite Roman Catholic World bc of my current job, and surroundings. I know we are Romans and I know they (RCC)desecrated the faith to suit themselves. Also my entire family i9s South American and ingrained in RC. Exit the burning ship.
I'm sorry to ask another question. At minute 11:35, you say that you will not cover the debate on whether or not there should be a union between state and church. Did you ever produce a video.that deals with this issue? It seems like since the dawn of civilization, every nation had a state religion until the Enlightenment.
No. We do not. Unfortunately, many of the original U-Matic 3/4 inch video tapes of the programs were erased by the National Greek Television station in NY. Thank you for your interest!
the 7th ecumenical council is all about icons. some background info: iconoclasts (people who disliked icons and wanted to destroy them) aka iconoclasm was deemed heresy and or icons were deemed of good use within the Church, for the use of icons preceded the 7th council and at the 7th council, they aren't deciding whether the Church should use icons or not, rather, the Church is defending the use of icons and defending against iconoclasts. God bless.
The RCC is like St Peter trying to walk on the water. When relying on its own power (and lack of faith in God), it drowns. Christ will take it back to the Apostles’ boat. At least, I hope so… Lord have mercy on me, as I don’t want to be mistaken. ☦️❤️
I was raised Protestant, Presbyterian to be exact. Converted to Roman Catholicism as an adult because I could no longer accept nor agree with Luther's solas. I am intrigued by Eastern Orthodoxy. Does this mean the current Roman Catholic Church itself was technically never part of the real Roman empire so to speak? Does this mean Byzantine Catholicism was indeed the default throughout the entire Western & Eastern Roman empire?
Yes, and only modern Historians use the word Byzantine because of the former Greek city that once stood where Constantinople was founded called Byzantium. The "Byzantines" never saw themselves as such and considered themselves Romans. Just look at the last speech of the last emperor of Rome, the real Rome.
Can you post a video on the fast for GOC church and how to approach it. I have downloaded the calendar from Mount Athos and try to follow the right hand side which is for the old calendar I'm not sure that I understand some of the dates especially since we're fasting now for August 15th / 28th

What sources do you have that the Franks were Arians? I thought Clovis was trinitarian. Was his wife, Clotilda, an Arian? When you say that they are Arians, do you mean that their filioque doctrine turns the Holy Spirit into a creature? I've heard that the filioque is Arianism applied to the Holy Spirit. Sorry for all the questions.
The below text is from: orthodoxwiki.org/Filioque It is useful to note that a regional council in Persia in 410 introduced one of the earliest forms of the filioque in the Creed; the council specified that the Spirit proceeds from the Father "and from the Son." Coming from the rich theology of early East Syrian Christianity, this expression in this context is authentically Eastern. Therefore, the filioque cannot be attacked as a solely Western innovation, nor as something created by the Pope. In the West, St. Augustine of Hippo taught that the Spirit came from the Father and the Son, though subordinate to neither. His theology was dominant in the West until the Middle Ages, including his theology of the Trinity. Other Latin fathers also spoke of the Spirit proceeding from both the Father and the Son. While familiar in the West, this way of speaking was virtually unknown in the Greek-speaking, Eastern Roman Empire. Although the Second Ecumenical Council in 381 had expanded and completed the Nicene Creed begun at the First Ecumenical Council, the Third Ecumenical Council (Ephesus, 431) had forbidden any further changes to it, except for by another Ecumenical Council. By this time, then, the text of the Nicene Creed had acquired a certain definitive authority, of ecumenical value and importance. Rome received the Fourth Ecumenical Council, which referred to preceding councils, citing the authority of the text of the Creed. However, at this time, central Italy was in a state of collapse. In 410 and 455, Rome was vandalized and sacked by barbarian invasions. In 476, the Western Roman Empire fell, with the exile of Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor. Chaos followed. The filioque was first used in Toledo, Spain in 587 without the consultation or agreement of the five patriarchs of the Church at that time and in direct violation of canons of the Third Ecumenical Council that prohibited unilateral alteration of the Creed by anything short of another Ecumenical Council. The purpose of its addition in Spain was to counter a heresy that was local to that region, probably some form of Arianism brought there by the Goths (who had been missionized by the Arian bishop Wulfila). The practice spread then to France where it was repudiated at the Gentilly Council in 767. After generations of social upheaval, strong leadership appeared in the person of Pepin the Short, king of the Franks, and his son, Charlemagne, crowned as emperor in 800. Charlemagne intended to restore the Roman Empire in the West, with himself in charge, to the chagrin of the leaders of the Eastern Roman Empire, whom he referred to as "Greeks" (and thus not Romans), despite the Roman capital being in the East and the continued use by Easterners of Roman to describe themselves. Charlemagne called for a council at Aix-la-Chapelle in 809 at which Pope Leo III forbade the use of the filioque clause and ordered that the original version of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed be engraved on silver tablets displayed at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome so that his conclusion would not be overturned in the future. Some historians have suggested that the Franks in the 9th century pressured the Pope to adopt the filioque in order to drive a wedge between the Roman Church and the other patriarchates. It is true that the filioque had come into wide use in the West and was widely thought to be an integral part of the Creed, while Rome, renowned for its stability in Orthodoxy, resisted. Similarly, unleavened bread had come to be thought of as normative for the Eucharist; diocesan priests were expected to be unmarried. In such cases, in the West, ancient tradition was forgotten. Contemporary usage was thought to be normative and authentic. In these matters of discipline, the influence of the Franks is certain. They intended to exalt Charlemagne, as the new Roman Emperor. The Catholic religion, as they knew it, was to be part of the package. Meanwhile, from ca. 726 to 843, the Eastern Roman Empire, under the thumb of successive emperors, was dominated by the heresy of iconoclasm. Both Franks and Greeks, in their own way, departed from ancient tradition. Unlike the East, however, where iconoclasm was repudiated at the Seventh Ecumenical Council and the use of icons later confirmed by the Empress Theodora, the West to date never recovered from its departure.
No, the Great Schism, also known as the East-West Schism, was a significant split that occurred between the Catholic Church in the West (represented by the Pope in Rome) and the Orthodox Church in the East (represented by the Patriarch in Constantinople) in the year 1054. While the Franks (a Germanic people) played an important role in the development of the Catholic Church in the West, the schism was not caused by a conflict between the Franks and the Greco-Romans. Instead, it was primarily caused by theological, political, and cultural differences that had been building between the two churches for centuries, including disagreements over issues such as the authority of the Pope, the use of icons, and the nature of the Holy Spirit. While the schism did result in a split between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, it is important to note that the Eastern Orthodox Church is not synonymous with the Greco-Roman world, nor is the Catholic Church synonymous with the Franks or the Latin West. Both churches have a complex history and diverse cultural and theological traditions that have evolved over time

Very informative! But who was the first Frankish pope? Was it Stephen II (752-757) who crowned Pipin the Short (the Frankish "king") in the Basilica of St. Denis in Paris? I read the "Frankish Papacy" page on Wikipedia to get this information.
(I see the Franks conquered and made serfs of the Romans over the Empire, and installed Frankish popes and clergy who inserted the filioque which the Roman popes tried to prevent. The eventual schism wasn't between Eastern and Western Roman Christians but between invading Franks and Romans, both East and West, because the Franks took over the Western papacy, or patriarchate and substituted a heretical doctrine for orthodoxy.)
Also, I looked up John Romanides on Wikipedia and through the references given gained access to several more of his writings. Again, thanks! God bless you.

There are not two Churches. There is only One Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, and that Church is called the Orthodox Church. The Latin "church' is not a part of the Church.
Neither the Greek "church" nor the Latin "church" are parts of the Church. That's why I don't accept anyone or anything from either the East or the West after 1054.
Interesting. Then it is the Franks who are to blame for the belief of "The concept of the Holy Father"? It is this belief that keeps us from having union with the Roman Catholic Church ? I wonder. It is a fact that Rome will not give this up. We have been told that this is reason why we do not have union with Rome.
The reason the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church does not have Eucharistic Communion with the occupant of the See of Rome is that the See of Rome went into schism and heresy many centuries ago.

Corn 1:10I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. Apparently, this appeal is not being heeded.
Any unity that is not based on the Truth is a false unity. The Truth is that there is only One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. There are not many truths. There can only be one Truth. What is not being heeded is this Truth. Those who are outside the Church should enter into the Church. The Church has always been United. The Truth has never been rendered. Christ is Truth, the Church is His body. To say that His Body is disunited is blasphemous.
Be that as it may, the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic (Orthodox) Church is the container wherein is contained the entire Truth. After all, the Church is the unblemished, undivided, Body of Christ. There is no division with the Body of Christ. Orthodox doctrine, dogma, and tradition is, always has been, and always will be in agreement with Itself..
@@owlnyc666When He says “Catholic” he does not mean “Roman Catholic/Papacy/Vatican etc. The word Catholic is derived from the Greek adjective, katholikos, meaning "universal," and from the adverbial phrase, kath' holou, meaning "on the whole."
Excellent question. The Papacy went back and forth between Frankish control and Roman control for many decades. These two lectures are an excellent place to start studying this part of history. You will find the answer there. romanity.org/htm/rom.03.en.franks_romans_feudalism_and_doctrine.01.htm romanity.org/htm/rom.03.en.franks_romans_feudalism_and_doctrine.02.htm This paragraph is interesting. It is from near the end of the first lecture: "Between the years 973-1003, and especially between 1003-1009, the Romans of Papal Romania made valiant efforts to preserve their freedom and independence from Frankish feudalism by having or attempting to have their own popes; once, at least, with the assistance of the East Roman army which had reached Rome and entered the city. The German emperors, however, devised an interim method of keeping the Romans somewhat pacified, by confirming the election of Roman popes from the Roman Tusculan family, which secured the papacy for itself, in exchange for the betrayal of Constantinople and her Orthodoxy represented by the Crescenti family. However, this temporary facade was abolished at the Council of Sutri in 1046. Thenceforth, Germanic popes were once again appointed by the German emperors, until the Normans became the deciding factor in allowing the reformer Franks to wrest the papacy from the imperial Germans. Even Italian popes like Gregory VII are descended from the Frankish army of occupation, established in Italy since the time of Charlemagne. It is no wonder that Beatrice and Matilda, wife and daughter of Boniface II, marquess of Tuscany, should become the great supporters of the reformed Papacy, since this is also a Frankish family established there since the ninth century."
He doesn't say which Pope, because he has no clue what he is talking about. Also, Christ's church is not bound by any particular nationality of its leader, so I don't know how a Frank Pope is supposed to be an argument against Roman Catholicism.
@@GreekOrthodoxTV I have no intention to read it. But you can answer my question, how a Frankish pope in any way argues against the truth of Roman Catholicism?
That you have no intention to read it is indicative that you have no intention to understanding the perspective of the Orthodox Church. Perhaps you are not a sincere seeker?
I’m a bit confused. My Archpriest (We’re Western Rite so he is NOT a Roman Monsignor) told me that religious sculpture in MODERATION is not forbidden in Orthodoxy: ua-cam.com/video/OMx98TeTKsU/v-deo.html It’s also ironic in the video that he condemns sculpture of any kind yet defends the ark when the Cherubim were sculpted. I also want to know this as a thought experiment: If Rome ever returns to Orthodoxy, what will a new Orthodox Pope’s responsibilities be towards all the art since the Renaissance? Should it all be sold to private collectors and secular museums? Should the Sistine Chapel be white washed and started over with proper icons? OR, can the frescoes be rehabilitated? Not expunged but tweaked, modified to be made Orthodox. Add proper silhouette halos, not those weird floating discs. Experiment with computers to find the perfect balance. Only one thing needs to be almost completely erased: God the Father. There should be NO attempt at depicting more than His hand. Show That only from the Golden Triangle, reaching to Adam. What do you think?
Your "thought experiment" is a bit silly, so we will not address except to say that many Papists have returned to the Church, either as individuals or as individual parishes. We do not expect the Papacy to convert in toto. Moving on... The icon is an artistic depiction of Christ, the Mother of God and the Saints. God the Father cannot be painted, because He has never been seen. God the Holy Spirit has appeared as a dove and as "tongues of fire." He may be shown in this way. God the Son became a man, and He may be painted in His human form. Icons are more than sacred pictures. Everything about them is theological. For example, they are always flat, flat so that we who inhabit the physical world will understand that the world of the spirit where Christ, His Mother, the angels, the saints, and the departed dwell, is a world of mystery which cannot be penetrated by our five senses. Customarily, Roman Catholicism has historically employed statues in its worship. The statues are life-like and three-dimensional. They seem to imitate the art of ancient Greece. Both arts are naturalistic. The Latins portray Christ, the Mother of God, the saints, even the angels, as if they were in a state of nature. This "naturalism" stems from the medieval idea that "grace perfects nature." The person or persons are represented on the icon as deified. He or she is not a perfect human being, but much more: They are transfigured and glorified. They have a new and grace-filled humanity. Important to remember is the Latin theory of grace: It is created by God for man. Orthodoxy teaches, as we recall, that grace is uncreated, and impacts all creation. It is a mysterious extension of the Divine Nature. Orthodox iconography reflects this truth, even as Roman Catholic statues reflect its idea of grace. Again, icons are a necessary part of Orthodox piety. The Orthodox honor and kiss icons, a devotion which passes from the icon to the person or persons represented in them. Icons are not idols and the Orthodox do not worship them. Worship is reserved for God alone. The statues set up in Roman Catholic temples are not commonly venerated; they are visual aids and decorations. orthodoxinfo.com/general/icon_faq.aspx One might be tempted to claim that, since the Cherubim are on the Ark and veneration was directed toward the ark that, therefore, the Cherubim themselves were objects of veneration. This is actually untrue. Interestingly, the scene on the ark is an empty seat flanked by two angelic beings. There is no image enthroned on the seat, yet it is this seemingly empty space above the seat that is the focus of the whole construction. That is the space that represents the presence of God. "There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony." Far from being objects of honor themselves, the Cherubs are depicted as honoring this space: "The cherubim had their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward each other; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat," (Exodus 37:9). If you are diverting your attention to focus on these angels as the objects of your honor, you are completely missing the point. All of this pointed only to the invisible God: "When Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he would hear the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the covenant from between the two cherubim; thus it spoke to him," (Numbers 7:89). The veneration before the ark was never directed at the Cherub figures. It was always directed at this imageless space above the seat that represented the presence of God: "He shall take a firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil. He shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the ark of the testimony, otherwise he will die. Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times," (Leviticus 16:12-14).
Rome is located in the district of Latium where the language is called Latin. Latin became the official language of the Roman Empire until about 600AD, when Greek took over. Latin became the official language of the “Holy Roman Empire” of Charlemagne. The Filioque was introduced to England by St Theodore of Tarsus at the Council of Hatfield in 680. One of his followers, Alcuin of York, took the doctrine to Germany, where it was adopted by Charlemagne. There is currently more than one version of (Chalcedonian) Orthodoxy in the Ukraine and in Africa.
Greek was always the second language of the Roman Empire. And what is more important, Rome formed the union with the Greek speaking tribes of Italy. The Aborigines who came to the area of Rome from Achaia, Greece many generations before the Trojan War. These Aborigines had already accepted into their tribe what was left of the Greek Pelasgians of Italy who had been decimated by a mysterious sickness. Porcius Cato's inclusion of the history of the Pelasgians in Italy and their union with the Aborigines in his De Origines, repeated in detail by Dionysius. These combined Aborigines and Pelasgians united with some Trojans who migrated to their land and together they became the ancient Greek-speaking Latins whose capital was Alba Longa. A branch of these Greek speaking Latins of Alba Longa, led by the brothers Romulus and Romus, founded Rome on the Palatine and Capitoline Hills. They were joined by some of the Greek Sabines of Italy who had been settled on the adjacent Quirinal Hill. The Sabines had migrated to Italy from Lacedaemonia in Southern Greece.

Q: When I was attending the Divine Liturgy on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul the other day, I heard the phrase "care of all the Churches" in the Epistle reading. To me, as a former Roman Catholic, this sounded rather strange, since I had been brought up to believe that the Pope, as the successor of St. Peter, had "the care of all the Churches." If St. Paul claims this for himself, does this not invalidate the Roman Catholic arguments for Papal primacy? On the other hand, how do we Orthodox explain the verse in the Gospel reading in which Christ tells St. Peter that He will give him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven? Does this mean that only St. Peter was given this prerogative? And what about the controversial verse, "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church"? Was St. Peter himself the foundation of the Church? This is all confusing and seems contradictory. (M.S., CT) A: You are quite right with regard to your suspicions about the problems occasioned for the Roman Catholic doctrine of Papal supremacy by St. Paul's comments about his responsibility for the Church. Largely in recognition of this and other challenges to Papism, since the Second Vatican Council Roman Catholic theologians have studiously avoided characterizing the Pope with such exaggerated terms as "the voice of God on earth," as they were wont to do in bygone days. Yet, astonishingly enough, in their efforts to make the doctrine of Papal supremacy more palatable to Orthodox and Protestants, they have tended, of late, to emphasize the Popes alleged "sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum," as the Latin Vulgate renders the original Greek of II Corinthians 11:28, "he merimna pason ton ekklesion" or "the care of all the Churches." That this statement is from the mouth of St. Paul, describing his own duties, and not a statement by St. Peter, hardly reinforces the notion of Petrine primacy on which the doctrine of Papal supremacy rests. Indeed, if one were to take it as literally as the Papists take Christs statement to St. Peter with regard to his Apostolic prerogatives in the Church, he would of necessity have to attribute to St. Paul the primacy which Roman Catholics give to the former. In his homily on this Epistle, St. John Chrysostomos expounds on the nature of St. Pau's care for the Churches. He says that this was the heaviest of the burdens with which St. Paul wrestled in his Apostolic ministry: "...His soul too was distracted, and his thoughts divided. For even if nothing from without had assailed him; yet the war within was enough, those waves on waves, that sleet of cares, that war of thoughts." St. John adds that, though it is difficult enough for one to look after a single house, St. Paul had "the care not of a single house, but of cities and peoples and nations and of the whole world" (Homily 12, in Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, First Series, Vol. XII [Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1978], p. 395). Several Roman Catholic exegetes, in keeping with their misunderstanding of Christs words about the ministry of St. Peter, have misunderstood this all-embracing pastoral care with which St. Paul, as the Apostle to the Nations, was naturally entrusted as an institutional prerogative. In so doing, however, they once more compromise their own arguments. For, if St. Paul was given such care of all the Churches, then primacy in the Church would logically belong, again, not to St. Peter, but to St. Paul and, by implication, to his successors. Clearly, however, St. Paul was not speaking, in the passage under consideration, of an institutional prerogative, as St. John Chrysostomos points out, but of a burden imposed on him by the nature of his ministry. With regard to the other verse which you cite, St. Theophylact of Ochrid points out that the words, "I will give unto thee,""...were spoken to Peter alone, yet they were given to all the apostles," since Christ also said, Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted." (The Explanation by Blessed Theophylact of the Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew [House Springs, MO: Chrysostom Press, 1994], p. 141.) The second verse to which St. Theophylact refers is St. John 20:23. As the translator rightly observes, the verb "remit" is in the second person plural, and thus refers not to St. Peter alone, but to all of the Apostles. As for the "controversial verse" (St. Matthew 16:18), St. Theophylact, following St. John Chrysostomos and the overwhelming consensus of both Greek and Latin Fathers, interprets the words "this rock" to denote St. Peters confession of faith in the Divinity of Christ, and not the Apostles person. Any other interpretation would, of course, violate the Christocentric nature of the Church and the rather clear Scriptural affirmation that "Christ is the head of the Church" (Ephesians 5:23) and the "head of the Body" (Colossians 1:18). Let us note, also, that the honor which the Orthodox Church has bestowed on both St. Peter and St. Paul, that is, the title of Protokoryphaioi, i.e., "leaders" or "chiefs" of the Apostles, gives us some insight into what the distinctions between the Disciples of Christ actually mean. They describe functions, responsibilities, cares, and rôles; they do not, however, refer to special privileges, prerogatives, or authority. For, in the final analysis, despite these distinctions, all of the Apostles were equal, just as all of the Bishops of the Orthodox Church-who are their successors-, whether they be simple Bishops or Patriarchs or Œcumenical Patriarchs, are absolute equals. This fact helps to explain both the passage which you cite from II Corinthians and the Gospel passages which Papists have wholly unjustifiably used to support the doctrine of Papal supremacy. From Orthodox Tradition, Vol. XVII, No. 1 (2000), pp. 28-30.

This is the start of further controversies and added dogmas that would eventually come about in Rome and lead to the schism of 1054. the 7th ecumenical council is all about icons. some background info: iconoclasts (people who disliked icons and wanted to destroy them) aka iconoclasm was deemed heresy and or icons were deemed of good use within the Church, for the use of icons preceded the 7th council and at the 7th council, they aren't deciding whether the Church should use icons or not, rather, the Church is defending the use of icons and defending against iconoclasts.

Does this mean Byzantine Catholicism was indeed the default throughout the entire Western & Eastern Roman empire?
You're correct. We would call it the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church centered at the capital of the Roman Empire: Constantinople.
Yes, and only modern Historians use the word Byzantine because of the former Greek city that once stood where Constantinople was founded called Byzantium.
The below text is from: orthodoxwiki.org/Filioque
It is useful to note that a regional council in Persia in 410 introduced one of the earliest forms of the filioque in the Creed; the council specified that the Spirit proceeds from the Father "and from the Son." Coming from the rich theology of early East Syrian Christianity, this expression in this context is authentically Eastern.

This paragraph is interesting. It is from near the end of the first lecture:
"Between the years 973-1003, and especially between 1003-1009, the Romans of Papal Romania made valiant efforts to preserve their freedom and independence from Frankish feudalism by having or attempting to have their own popes; once, at least, with the assistance of the East Roman army which had reached Rome and entered the city.

I’m a bit confused. My Archpriest (We’re Western Rite so he is NOT a Roman Monsignor) told me that religious sculpture in MODERATION is not forbidden in Orthodoxy:
ua-cam.com/video/OMx98TeTKsU/v-deo.html
It’s also ironic in the video that he condemns sculpture of any kind yet defends the ark when the Cherubim were sculpted.
I also want to know this as a thought experiment:
If Rome ever returns to Orthodoxy, what will a new Orthodox Pope’s responsibilities be towards all the art since the Renaissance? Should it all be sold to private collectors and secular museums?
Should the Sistine Chapel be white washed and started over with proper icons?
OR, can the frescoes be rehabilitated?
Not expunged but tweaked, modified to be made Orthodox.
Add proper silhouette halos, not those weird floating discs. Experiment with computers to find the perfect balance.
Only one thing needs to be almost completely erased:
God the Father.
This "naturalism" stems from the medieval idea that "grace perfects nature."
The person or persons are represented on the icon as deified.
The statues set up in Roman Catholic temples are not commonly venerated; they are visual aids and decorations.
orthodoxinfo.com/general/icon_faq.aspx
One might be tempted to claim that, since the Cherubim are on the Ark and veneration was directed toward the ark that, therefore, the Cherubim themselves were objects of veneration. This is actually untrue. Interestingly, the scene on the ark is an empty seat flanked by two angelic beings. There is no image enthroned on the seat, yet it is this seemingly empty space above the seat that is the focus of the whole construction. That is the space that represents the presence of God. "There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony." Far from being objects of honor themselves, the Cherubs are depicted as honoring this space:
"The cherubim had their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward each other; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat," (Exodus 37:9).
If you are diverting your attention to focus on these angels as the objects of your honor, you are completely missing the point. All of this pointed only to the invisible God:
"When Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he would hear the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the covenant from between the two cherubim; thus it spoke to him," (Numbers 7:89).
The veneration before the ark was never directed at the Cherub figures. It was always directed at this imageless space above the seat that represented the presence of God:
"He shall take a firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil.

Wow! Good point!

(M.S., CT)
A: You are quite right with regard to your suspicions about the problems occasioned for the Roman Catholic doctrine of Papal supremacy by St.
