Here's everything you need to know about the Heralds: Taln is love, Taln is life.
🙏🏻
Taln is crazy. 4500 Years of Torture will do that to people
Everyone is asking "Who is Taln"? But no one is asking "How is Taln"?
Love of taln, Cuz hes the only one strong enough of will to try and keep going! Lasted long than ever before
@@Justadude1997 I believe he never actually broke.
It should also be noted that while on Braize, the Heralds share all pain. Any Herald on Braize being tortured, shared their pain with all the other Heralds on Braize. Also, if just one of them breaks...a desolation starts and they all are transported back to Roshar to prepare humanity for it. So not all of them have to tap out on Braize, just a single one. Taln, the man they left by himself, was the only Herald to never break. All the rest broke at some point, and started a Desolation. But not Taln. That's why when he was the only one in Braize, they decided to try and not follow him. However, this meant that Taln was enduring 10x more pain than any other Herald has ever endured, because there was no other Heralds on Braize to share the pain with.
Not to mention, they held off the desolations for hundreds of years at a time at first, then as they started to break, less and less time between desolations. The last ones had 2 years between I think. When it was just Taln by himself, he held it off for 4,500 years.
@@micah7492 and was driven mad by the thousands of years of torture 😓
I can't wait to find out how the current desolation started seeing as Taln never broke.
@@fadetoblack1026 I hadn't thought of that, but I absolutely love the concept!
@@fadetoblack1026 The parshendi forced the everstorm and the return of the voidspren so there was no point in Taln staying in Braize.
So can we talk about how Taln held off the Fused for 4500 years, and then ran off and tell the humans to prepare. And when Shalash tried to apologize for leaving him, he *said that it was a good thing since now humans had time to develope, pretty much saying that he regrets nothing*
The Heralds at 100%=10 people
The Heralds at 99%= Taln
taln didnt break its confirmed
Just reread the Prelude. Kalak does not convince the other heralds to betray the oath. They all had already decided to do that before he got back. Jezrein explicitly tells him so.
Yeah I thought they had made the choice despite Kalak not being there and Jezrein was simply waiting for him to show up.
Correction - Honor didn’t find the 10 Heralds. The 10 Heralds approached him with the concept of the Oathpact and he agreed.
When I read the first few stormlight books I saw the depictions of the harolds as kind of similar soldiers with PTSD who even after their wars are over are tormented and tortured by what they had to do. They went in thinking what they were doing was righteous and noble but realized that what they had signed up for was an eternity of violence and nightmares.
I love this insight!
And then again what in Stormlight isn’t about PTSD
That's one of the things that makes Stormlight so awesome...PTSD, dissociative identity disorder, depression, addiction. The series has so much psychology in it and does a great and realistic job at depicting mental illness.
What makes it so tragic is that they think they will be able to keep Roshar largely free of strife by taking on the burden but what really happens is the Heralds create a cycle of suffering that becomes more and more desperate and intense over time. At least until the Last Desolation, no spoilers, I'm halfway through Words of Radiance right now.
That's so sad...😢
I would love an in depth look at who all the heralds are, and where they have been mentioned so far in the series! I usually understand when a herald is mentioned or shows up, but I can't keep them straight for the life of me.
Awesome! I'd love to get more into their appearances throughout the novels.
Same. I am aware of each of them and know their names when they're mentioned in the books but the only one I really know is Jezrien. The rest of them are mixed up for me as far as who they are and which order of the Radiance they're identified with.
Well whats confirmed is that all of the Heralds have gone insane. Each in their own way and even if they still cared about humanity they're in no way mentally capable of leading them anymore.
@@vladtheimpaler9577 Ash is probably the most sane one because we know for sure Taln Jezrien Ishar Nale and probably Kalak have gone insane and those are the ones weve seen/heard of on screen
I remember reading that prelude ....I didn't really get it, but I just kept reading. I'm glad you've explained it here. I have just started reading Rhythm of War, so if you can expand on the Heralds without spoilers I'm all for it. Thanks
Keep reading as you will find out
They didn’t lay their swords in the ground to acknowledge their fulfilling of the oathpact. They did it to say that they quit
Small correction: everybody THOUGHT that they did it to signal the fulfilling of the oathpact for thousands of years, but they actually did it because they failed/quit.
Whatever the hell Ishar is doing is horrifying.
Just finished Oathbringer. I had a lot of confusion about this topic. This video was the perfect summary and cleared things up nicely. Thanks.
You're welcome man, glad it helped! Hope you're recovered from the insanity that is the ending of Oathbringer lol!
This is great! I'll definitely be coming back to this every time I need a refresher (like before RoW comes out!)
Thanks mate!
man have you ever carried anything perchance?
Lemme just address some things left out
It is clear what they r tortured by in Braize. As far as I know, the heralds have to trap the spirits and entities of old in Braize and not let them get out, but the entities torture them to the point that the heralds have to flee braize, and when the heralds do leave braize, there is no one left to trap the entities there, so they escape and invade roshar again and the desolation starts anew
They aren't "Evil entities", they are the ancestors of the singers/listeners, who have been turned into cognitive shadows by Odium, when they die on Roshar, they get sent back to Braize as a cognitive shadow. They find the heralds, torture them until they break, boom new desolation. They aren't "evil", they think humans are evil since they kinda took over Roshar from the singers.
@@CSPare_CChange Dude, it's pretty clear the the other person was trying to avoid giving spoilers. You just spoiled the major plot twist of book 1 *and* the major plot twist of book 3 in just 3 sentences. This video is supposed to be a spoiler free video.
@@CSPare_CChange yes Tommy baker is kinda right, it is also to avoid a spoiler
@@Ruminations09 I think the statute of limitations on spoilers for the first 3 books has passed. If you haven't read them, why are you watching this video? I assumed the spoiler free was referring to Rhythm of War.
In any case, I apologize for ruining anyone's experience. Also, if you managed to catch all of that on your first read through, kudos to you. Took me 3 read throughs and scouring the 17th shard to learn all that.
@@CSPare_CChange "if you haven't read them, why are you watching this video"
Because this video is explicitly a spoiler free video.
Someone who hasn't read the books would watch this video to see if the premise of the books interests them.
Your question is basically the same as asking "if you haven't read the book, why are you looking at a review of the book". The fact that they haven't read it is precisely the reason they would be interested in a review, yet you're acting like the review is made for people who already like the series.
That's not how reviews work.
Great recap and refresher on the Heralds! The artists are very talented, and your animations were on point. I would definitely be down to watch a more detailed video if you put that out. Never can get enough Stormlight!
Awesome man, thanks so much! Yeah, the artists are so impressive.
Took long breaks between the first 3 books so this refresher is PERFECTION! The comments are even more helpful. Thank you!
Your voice + background sounds make this into something so much more. Hope you expand on this
Commenting to say I come back here every few months. I used your videos before every book and I'm now about to read Rhythm of War. What a journey it has been!
Great video. Will definitely love to see another in-depth video on the whereabouts of the heralds.
I've just finished the way of Kings and omg, all of it make so much sense now. Thank you so much man.
You're welcome! I'm glad I helped out and congrats on finishing Way of Kings. The ending of that book still hits me so hard!
I finally started reading Way of Kings! And yep, the lore is definitely going through one ear and out the other 😂 So this vid is very much welcome 😊
Oh awesome! Hahaha, it's so full on at first! I'm glad this was helpful :)
Almost finished with book 3 and let me commend you for this incredibly helpful explanation!!
Thank you so much! Enjoy the insanity that is the ending of Oathbringer!
I am back after finishing Rhythm of War. I would love to get the in depth look at the Heralds.
Awesome content! So happy to have found a channel giving high level content to Stormlight Archive!!
Thanks man! Plenty more Stormlight content to come :)
so glad i found this channel. You make great content that helps me keep up a little more with what’s actually going on
That means so much, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
Definitely would love an even deeper dive into the heralds!
Oo, yes! A video on each would be awesome!
My favorite thing about this series is how Brandon Sanderson finds interesting ways to bend the rules in Roshar's magic system. I'm thinking of Renarin and his spren, Lift and her stormlight, and Adolin's sharpblade.
With that in mind, I have a theory that the heralds will be able to pass on their burden and find 10 new people to be heralds. Likely our current cast of characters.
Ahh, that would be very interesting, I like that theory!
Dalinar would make a fantastic Herald, at least.
The best part is that they don't even bend the rules, we just have an incomplete understanding of the rules. It's like magnets, they seem to bend the rules until we gain a deeper understanding of physics.
I've been thinking the same about 10 new heralds. I wonder if Sanderson's plan all along has been to renew the oath pact in some way to save the world, but I don't think it will be a 1 to 1 correspondence. I think he's got something else in mind with fewer heralds or different forces bound by the pact.
I have a feeling that if Dalinar creates a new Oathpact, it will be easier for the Fused and the new Heralds. They won't be tortured on Braize, but maybe to some other planet to live in peace, or an eternal battle perhaps (same conflict, different planet - hopefully without other lives). Although, I don't know that Dalinar will get the chance to create the new Oathpact. Or if he does have the chance, he might not if he can make a deal with the fuzed to coexist on Roshar.
This video is so helpful! I have the first 3 books so far, only once. I was still a bit confused about the Heralds. Thank you!! I'd love to see a more in depth version for people who have read the books!!
This was fantastic. It cleared up a few questions for me and adds to the epicness of the story.
I just finished reading Words of Radiance.
Thank you! I wish I could read Words of Radiance again for the first time man.
This is great, thank you! I've read the books several times but nice to have this explanation as it fills in some gaps of my understanding.
Thank you so much! I’m glad even a veteran of the series like yourself gets something out of these vids too :)
Ironically I've been a one piece fan for years but stumbled across this as I just started the stormlight archive. Looking at all the videos and started seeing one piece ones. Seems like this channel fits my taste.
Reading Rhythm of War now. Would love to recap on what the Heralds are doing now! Many tks!
I thought this was going to be a video about the ten herolds and who they were, but Im not complaining. the information is pretty good, if you havnt read the books.
I would love to see more about the Harolds
Yes please, current in-depth explanation!
Perfectly explained. Would love any other content you make about the stormlight archive.
Man, I've read all the book, but this *still* helped! Thanks Christian!
No problem Lora, glad it helped!
super excited knowing we still have 6 books to go , I love this series
Just finished words of radiance and this was very insightful. Looking forward to more content
Thank you! I was so confused with the prelude. Please make a more in-depth spoiler version!
I'm glad it helped!! I think I'll be doing that :)
YES MORE ON THE HERALDS PLEASE! It's so hard to keep track of all thier names in the book D:
I started Rhythm of War today. Very excited to get through it.
Awesome, I hope you enjoy it!
Really enjoyed your video, I’m now reading the series for the second time. Brandon Sanderson is simply an amazing writer.
Very clearly explained! And you have a great soothing voice haha. Thank you, and would love the more in depth video!
Thanks very much! I plan to do more in depth ones so stick around :)
Would love to see some spoiler videos about the heralds!
The pictures in this video are so beautiful!
There are some incredibly talented artists out there! So glad they've decided to bring the SLA to life.
thank you for the video! I finished the way of kings for the first time yesterday, and I was a little confused by the prologue.
this video helped make sense of the prologue, thank you!
No worries mate! How amazing is the ending of the way of kings?
Glad the video helped 😊
@@LostinDiscovery I could not put the book down!
I felt bad taking a 2 mins break lmao. xD
I really want to continue the series, but I don't have the books yet. Hopefully I'll be getting them soon.
Keep up the good work, my man!
Ulg this makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE! Thank you for explaining this.
No problem, glad it helped!
Great summary of what we know of the Heralds!
Thanks!
Thanks for explaining this! Have been confused about the Heralds since reading WoK and this definitely cleared things up.
No worries! I’m glad this cleared things up for you!
Can't blame them for trying to get out of it.
After a while the endless cycle of torture and death
Really going to be unbearable
Cool video. Been binging vids since rhtym of war. I really liked the pictures in the video
Thanks! I’m super jealous the American editions have these artworks in the inner sleeve.
Great video! I would love to see a more in depth look at all of the Heralds.
Thank you! I've got a new video on Nale the Herald of Justice and am planning to do more :)
This was so great! Thank you so much! :) I have read Way of the Kings 4 times now, Words of Radiance 2 times, Oathbringer 1 time (I'm about to start my 2nd) and while I new some about what the Heralds were up to, this helped so much! I love Brandon Sanderson's work, but I feel like this series there are a few characters that deserve a little more page time, like the Heralds! Please do an in-depth look at the Heralds. Also, now subscribed.
Wow, that's impressive! So glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for subscribing :) I've got a video on Shalash and Nale so far if you'd like more on the Heralds.
"its unknown exactly what they are tortured by-"
Fused and Voidspren, obviously.
You are excellent. It was a pleasure to listen to you, please keep up.
This is great stuff! I'll definitely be suggesting this channel.
Thank you!
Thank you so much! So many questions answered!!
Would love to have an in depth discussion video of where they are currently in book 4 and the dynamics of them now
Impressive message and motivation much appreciated ❤👑
Thank you mate.
Hey Mate! A subscriber of yours and a friend of mine forbade me from subscribing to your channel due to the possibility of getting spoiled. I just finished "Words of Radiance" and am watching this video under strict supervision of said friend. Be assured, as soon as I finish "Rhythm of War" I'll be subscribing happily.
Awesome work so far, really love your videos and your unique take on the stormlight archives. Keep up the amazing work and stay healthy!
Damn right bridgeboi, you have yet to learn a lot about Roshar let alone the Cosmere. Read up so you can subscribe and join the ranks of Radiants already.
Hahah, you guys are awesome! Appreciate the support man, enjoy the ride!
Please make a more detailed video of the Heralds
Thank you for this video! I'm new to the Stormlight Archive and there is so much to keep track of, so this is very useful going forward! (Also this is super random but you have a very calming voice, you could be an audiobook narrator or something!)
I’m glad it was helpful! The series can be super overwhelming at first so I know you mean. Thanks very much!
Great video. I’d love to see you do a video on the knights Radiant.
Thank you! I'll add it to my list :)
Talenelat'Elin Stonesinew, Herald of War!
Great video! I’m really enjoying your channel!
Thank you!
Small note. When they are transported to Braize, they are not immediately in custody. They live on the run and in hiding until they are caught and tortured.
how do you know that? Don't recall that being detailed in the series yet.
Were does it say that?
@@joepalkovic "With both Fused and Heralds bound to the same planet, it became a vicious game of hide-and-seek; once a Herald was found, the torture began."
First thank you for your research on the heralds. I absolutely love love love Brandon Sandersons cosmere collection. I’m secretly in love with Kalladin. Sshh.. don’t tell anybody. Anyways I would like a podcast about how exactly taravangian took over odium. Did he kill odium and take possession of his shards? Or what exactly happened? I must say I’m not at all looking forward to Brandon ending this collection. I think all of his fans need to protest and insist that he continue to write this story for another 30years or so by which time we all will be too old and blind to read lol! Seriously though. There can’t be an ending😢. Thank you for your time and effort u put into your research of the cosmere❤
Just started rhythm of war its fun to watch this video now
It was less than a year between the last two desolations before the nine abandoned the oathpact.
9 heralds abandoned their duty, 9 spren unmade by Odium. Probably not a coincidence.
I just got through the first half of The Way of Kings, so I gotta be careful for Spoilers, but I am going to be back for more videos - thank you for the explanations :)
Sweet! Enjoy the rest of the book and no problem :)
Here is what I'd like to see a video on: I've started Rhythm of War but can't seem to remember what has been revealed about the ancient Parshendi, the listeners, and what events happened to change them into the parshmen. There seems to be two major events that happened thousands of years ago that brought us to where we are now in the story. One was the heralds decision mentioned in this video, and the other was something the listeners did that they were concerned Gavilar was going to undo. How did all the parshmen (except the listeners) get turned into dull form? why?
I would love to to a video on the history of the Parshendi, I’m glad you’re interested! I’ll finish RoW first so I’ve got as much information as possible to work with.
Listeners vs singers. Listeners abandoned all gods, went into hiding, only had work form and mate form for a long time.
Singers are the original inhabitants of Roshar, a portion of them were given powers by Odium, they are called the Fused. When a desolation ends and all fused are dead, there are still regular singers on Roshar. A few hundred years or so ago, one of the unmade figured out how to give these regular singers forms of power, so everyone thought this was a desolation, this is known as the false desolation. Something happened to that unmade (got trapped in a sphere), and this did something to all the singers in the world, severed their connection to the rhythms of roshar, now they are all in dull form. The listeners were unaffected by this, and were surprised to discover a bunch of dull form singers with the humans when they met.
Yes q deep dive would be awesome!
This is a great summary! I'll agree that it was tough for me to keep the Heralds straight the first read through. The second one made it easier. Glad I watched this though because somehow I thought Rayse was a person not a place lol Hard to keep it all straight, even when I frequent coppermind.
I didn't even know Braize existed really until I did my research, I knew they went somewhere but didn't understand where! Thanks for commenting!
@@LostinDiscovery omg you were saying BRAIZE. Ok this makes sense. I think Rayse is a person...he's mentioned in the little before chapters I think.
@@Bookborn Rayse is the vessel for the shard of Odium. He was a human, one of the 16 holders of the shards of adonalsium
@@CSPare_CChange Yes, I dunno if you saw the other comments but I heard him saying RAYSE when he was saying BRAIZE so it all worked out haha
@@Bookborn haha yeah I saw, just wanted to let you know u r right that Rayse is a person
If anyone hasn’t read the stormlight archive yet I would avoid this video. He said it’s spoiler free but in my opinion this is very spoiler heavy. There’s things in here that are slowly revealed through the series and I really enjoyed learning about them as I read it. Having read the books myself I enjoyed this video though 👍🏻
Definitely would love a rehash before the next book in November
I'll see what I can do! :)
This video contains the appropriate amount of Taln love. I approve.
Hell yeah.
Thanks, new to the series.
Of course man, welcome!
How do you have so few subscribers? Just discovered you and loving the content so far.
That’s really kind of you to say, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
i LOVE your voiceeee . Its like an angel
Great video sir!
Thanks man!
What a good video!! I hope to find more easy to listen to stormlight lore from you!!
Thank you!! Plenty on the channel and plenty more to come :)
@@LostinDiscovery I saw and added to my list!! You have a very even tone/volume, much appreciated
Thank you for explaining this!! Like you, I was also wondering what the deal was. Why start Way of Kings with this off prelude? Now I get it so thanks!
Great content dude, subbed.
Well done mate, though I wish you’d have done a deep dive. Def earned a sub, you have a very pleasing voice.
Thanks man! I’ve done more in-depth videos on the Heralds Nale and Shalash if you’re interested. Many more to come though :)
I would love a detailed review of the heralds, with spoiler warnings of course.
I've done Shalash and Nale, spoiler warnings included :)
Loving your video ( from Brussels mate 'Mauritian living in Belgium) so much i missed
Thanks man! Greetings from Australia! I've always been meaning to travel to Belgium and I've had Mauritian friends who tell me how beautiful their home country is so I guess I'll have to add it to the list too! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Heralds are basically said there 5th oath/word/vow and they are immortal because of an oathpact
I love your videos! Please put subtitles 😁
Just had to watch again
Yeah I'd like to see some more in depth details.
While I love the books, I don't have the time to dig into these books in detail anymore. It's hard to find the time to really reread and find the nitty gritty...I missed worldhoppers and references to other magic systems, Getting in detail on stormlight is something I'd very much enjoy.
Definitely plan on making more :) It's hard to invest the time into all the details in these massive series.
Spoilers-ish!?
So I have a Stormlight 5 theory about the contest of champions!! My theory is kinda out there but hear me out, I beg you!!
So I believe Kaladin and Szeth travel to Shinnovar and meet Ishi/Ishar but he’s unwilling/unable to help them. However, through Kaladin doing Kaladin things or Szeth simply following his oath they manage to bring Ishar back to Urithiru a little too late and find that the contest has already began and is going horribly for Dalinar. In a moment of desperation Dalinar opens a perpendicularity and Ishar’s mind clears temporarily!
Upon seeing how the battle is going and racked with guilt for his betrayal of Taln, he intervenes and takes the Conection between Dalinar and Odium that bonds them in this contest!!
Ishar then proceeds to fight in Dalinar’s stead but proceeds to lose the battle. So the contest ends with Taravodium victorious, having claimed Ishar’s soul and uncertainty about the future of Roshar!!
This allows us to look at Odium’s deception of Ishar, convincing him to experiment with the surges on Ashyn, which leads to the destruction of Ashyn in Stormlight Era 2!!!
Great video
Please do an in-depth about storm light lore
I just finished WoK, so this has been super useful! When does the reader learn about Braize though? I don’t think I caught that during my read.
I think this is first mentioned in Oathbringer. If you read all cosmere books you could have puzzled it out when you read the fictiv essays in the shortstory collection arcanum unbounded
Very helpful, thank you.
No worries :)
Please do a video on Adonalsium itself.
I must have listened to a entirely different prologe.
I've been meaning to go back but it was the perspective of a newly recruited soldier. I don't really remember much about it.
There's two prologues. The one you're referencing is the second one.
Dude please do the the video u suggested regards the heralds where they are on Roshar etc... keeping track with names changes etc is a nitemare
Absolutely! I've done Shalash and Nale so far if you'd like to check those out :)
The 17th shard has a recap of all the heralds up to the point of RoW.
Can you please Vaatividya the Heralds individually?
Can you please get a tiktok and speak about stormlight archive? And can you please make a post where you speak about Spren, Shallan, Eshonai, the realms, yes pretty much make post about everything in Stormlight. Love your videos.
