Professor Veena Sahajwalla, affectionately known as the ‘Queen of Waste’, grew up in Mumbai experiencing the possibilities for waste, and she’s since devoted her life to devising new ways to recycle as much as possible. She got her start inventing ‘green steel’ a steelmaking process that requires no new metal, and uses waste tires to replace cola. Now, in a basement lab in Sydney, Veena is inventing radical new ways to break e-waste down to its basic molecules and finally make circuit boards truly recyclable, and helping tackle fabric and mattress waste by giving it a new future as bathroom tile. While you may not see her work day to day, Veena is changing the shape of recycling around the world.

Perception is everything! I used to get annoyed when having to rake leaves from the trees around the yard, it was a chore. Then I started gardening and saw a video where the creator referred to leaves and cuttings as organic materials that are important for plants. Now I'm excited to collect organic materials for my home garden and make fertiliser! Still the same leaves and raking process but my perception changed everything about the process. The "problem" isn't the problem, the problem is how you look at the "problem". If you can change that, then you will have no problems, just an abundance of solutions.
I loved this video!! Very clever solutions, also like what she said about “there is no such thing as throwing ’away’, there’s only one earth!” And it’s so true we gotta make the most out of our limited resources. ❤️
She is amazing, and her enthusiasm for what she does contagious. I can’t wait to see this kind of resourcefulness reach other parts of the world.
wow, what a lovely person. I am going to use your tiles if i ever renovate my floors. If there was ever a way to invest in these, I would. I am bothered immensely by waste and I thought this level of recycling was only fantasy.
Many homeless people where i live collect wire and metals. Many dig in garbages from sold homes and even sell new like or antique items on facebook marketplace that are admittedly impressive. Many homeless with mental health issue are excellent recyclers.
I'd love to see industries related to recycling that those disconnected from typical marketplaces could create employment through.
I just love Veena and her passion for utilising every form of waste. She is a gift to Australia with her vast expertise and vibrant imagination to create all these new products. We used to live in a much more sustainable way, where pretty much everything was considered a resource, with some animal bones being the main thing left over, after they’d been used to make stocks and broths, and even sewage and buckets of urine were collected and used in industrial processes.
No one wants to revert to medieval living standards (well, no one with empathy) but we do need to get back to products having a more cyclical existence where they can be recycled easily and the resources reused. We already have so much plastic etc available to us and we need to, as a society, make better use of the resources we already have and she’s right - it provides jobs and economic growth as well. I hope that this sector grows so much.
She’s doing amazing work - we need more people like her in the world at the moment. Australia: you’re lucky to have her!

Brilliant video. Thank you. These are essential practices. I live in the USA. Here, what we call Big Box Stores control much of the retail market. If you want to buy home building or maintenance supplies you basically choose between Home Depot or Lowes, with Ace Hardware coming in a distant third. Likewise, home supplies seem come from Wal-Mart. For these stores the general principle is that a product has to be available to ALL of their stores ALL of the time. So a small manufacturer or a new manufacturer is unable to break into the market. Eventually, this system has to change in order for the systems you demonstrated to succeed, as they must for our resources to last.
I’ve never heard of this woman, but I’m now her biggest fan!

If one stops to think, trash is an invention of human beings, it is not something that was meant to be. We should try to eradicate the very idea of waste from common thinking, and instead bring in the thought that everything is destined to be something else no matter what it is.

had to pause the third time the camera focused on fabrics being "waste" when they are still rolled around those paper cores! my heart hurts. fashion is still so fast because of manufacturers and their greed. those could still be workable, not even time to recycled them yet. sell them at a discount elsewhere or whatever.

There is a great sense of creativity and enthusiasm underlying the projects which the authors develop, from a bike shed to a glorious eco-shed. I like the way explanations are provided for decisions made from a range of options. I am not really in a position to rate the more technical detail, but think I am prepared to boldly go shed- building, equipped with this manual.
