Why? I mean they do that so awesome that it's understandable that some still think it's a real guitar :D
If you refer to the guitar solo effect try to look at the studio recording session and you will see that is still voice modified after recording...but they basically don't use any effect for the voice if not the voice itself and the live performances are the proof

They apparently use a lot of post-processors (or whatever they're called - auditory special effects if you will) to make the "guitar" solos sound more guitar-like. They seriously don't use strings. Vocal harmony FTW!

I suppose it depends on how you classify it. To my mind, since the Amp is designed to mess with the fourier coefficients, it's as much a musical instrument as a flute or a clarinet is. Even though the air originates from the player's lungs, it's an external device intended to control the sound.
