On the pass across the top (say right to left), why does the top defender go diagonal from top right to bottom left? Why not simply shift the two lower defenders. Perhaps it's anticipation of a ball to the low point.

In the Whistle Drill at end of the video, do you ever let them play long enough to let the offense score? Just curious as a coach do you Whistle to put ball down when you see the offense got into the paint??

I’d like to recognize one of the great defensive minds if the 1960s -70s. His name is Al LoBalbo. He coached HS basketball in North Jersey when Hubie Brown, Rollie Massmino, Richie Adubato, Dick Vitale, etc were sharing ideas. He mentored Bobby Knight when he coached at Army and took us to see games there every year we played for him at Belleville HS. He went on to coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University where his team led the nation once in scoring defense and assisted Lou Carnesecca at St. John’s. His ideas of Ball-You-Man, no baseline drives, help defense and rotation, hedging off picks, double teaming the corner, and BOXING OUT, are things that I see in today’s game are principles that can be traced back to his intense love of teaching defense first. Allowed us to stay with teams who had more talent. Privileged to play for and learn from him.

Technology can help. I think having a videographer recording even practice can help because you can review it with the players and spot things you won't notice when you're on the floor close up, just trying to direct a special thing. Everybody knows video is helpful for reviewing games, so why not practice too.
I might tend to favor actual game-playing situations where the players aren't thinking rationally so much as intuitively and then review afterward (sessions maybe quarter-length with longer breaks to do the review before another quarter of play). Pros, and even college players, already have a lot of these skills and the need to work on more strategic things like finding and forcing the best matchup before going iso or motion offense with a lot of passing or whatnot. Those aren't like the examples of this video.

LAST TWO DRILLS WERE MONEY. They form the foundation of basically your team's defensive philosophy (6th being NO MIDDLE and 7th for ROTATIONS).

I suppose whistle drill coincides with the no paint drill as a progression so I’m assuming “no”

Here is what Jim Huber said... I would teach over the top with high hands, screener's defender loosens up to protect the curl and the slip. I would also switch any time with a similar size player.
