      I was 13 turned 14 during the 2010 World Cup and despite the issues with ball, this was my favourite Worl Cup. Barely remember the 2006 World Cup and was only like 5-6 for the 2002 World Cup.
      The ball was an issue though like you said. When playing with it in school, me and my friends would complain because of the unpredictability of it when striking.

      They also played the best football in that tournament. However Spain was still too strong. In 2014 when Germany won the whole thing they also got a little bit lucky. Compared to 2010 a lot of players did not have their best form.

      @@davinnicode yeah Spain absolutely dominated them, but then again they only lost by one goals and Müller was out with yellow cards so who knows what could have happened. In 2014 you're right, without Manuel Neuer they get knocked out by Algeria in the round of 16 already and then probaly again by France in the quarters, he should have won best player

    The 2010 world cup brought people around the world to Africa to learn about African culture and South Africa did a hell of job teaching people about African culture
    And for me as a 6 year old boy at the time was introduced to football
    The South African World Cup had plenty of flaws

    I've been alive for 8 world cups and watched 6 of them, and 2010 is by far my most memorable. For us Africans, this was our opportunity to showcase ourselves to the world and we took that opportunity with both hands. The build-up to the tournament was INTENSE. I remember the day of the opening match, I was at university and the whole atmosphere was like the holidays had started, you could feel the excitement in the air. The whole month was a festival. Wakawaka, Wavin' Flag, Sign of a Victory, Oh Africa etc. were played on repeat, and they still rock. You had sponsor events and promotions and big screens and prizes to be won... it was an unforgettable month.
    Of course not all things went well. I was disappointed by the performance of our African sides, only one made it past the group stage. The football wasn't thaaaat great, lots of great players underperformed, there were lots of empty seats even for knockout matches, and the jabulani wrecked havoc (although not as much as the video makes it out to be).
    Unfortunately for us here in Tanzania, the final was ruined for us watching on national television because it coincided with the ruling party's national assembly which was nominating the candidate for the presidency for the national election later that year. The event was being shown live, and by the time the final had kicked off, the event had not concluded. So much that the president had to ask for the festivities to be cut short to allow the match to be shown. So we joined some 30 mins after the final started, with no pre-match analysis, no team news, and having missed De Jong's kung-fu kick.

      Suarez made a calculated decision. He wasn’t being sneaky, it was tactical. I wanted Ghana but I thought it was a brilliant calculated risk and frankly not as uncommon as you would think. I have seen many center backs intentionally take reds to avoid an almost certain goal at the end of the game. Cheating is using PEDs or intentionally deceiving an official a la Maradona or Henry.

    • @leonfeargus
      @leonfeargus Рік тому +2

      Suarez cheated, that's why he received a red card as punishment. You have to play by the rules. If you cheat, you will receive a penalty in the form of a free kick, yellow card, spot kick, or even a red card. Right?

    • @chriswhetton3584
      @chriswhetton3584 Рік тому +8

      @@leonfeargus incorrect. Suarez and the officials followed the rules. Fouls are often tactical and I don’t know an official who would argue that. Maradona cheated, he was not punished and even denied it during the game. Henry cheated, he escaped punishment and the laws of the game. Suarez followed the rules and so did the officials. American football, basketball, hockey, all have what we call professional fouls. If you are following the rules, that means accepting the consequences that come with them, without endangering the safety of anyone, then it is not cheating. Now you could argue the ethics of such a decision, just like tax write offs etc, but you can’t argue the legality of it. I think you have a problem with the ethics and what you personally believe is in the spirit of the game. I would have agreed with you 10 years ago but as I learned more and experienced more, I can appreciate it as a gamble. Remember, Ghana still had every chance in the world to score from the penalty spot, but they failed. They were provided with their own opportunity per the laws of the game and came up short.

    2. Did we give bad accommodations
    3. Did we mistreat you as guests
    4. Did we give you bad roads and transport
    5. Did we give you bad food
    I guess the issue of vuvuzela is left to individual preference. As country we hosted the world cup well but we cant control how the teams perform on the pitch. 6:43 if you watch the Brazil vs Netherlands game from the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal, Brazil were all over the Netherlands in the first half. But then Netherlands equalised and the defence never recovered and Felipe Melo's petulance cost them. And Germany came into the tournament with like house money. They went into their tournament with their best and most experienced player Michael Ballack sidelined, and we did not really know what to expect from some of their younger talents like Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller, etc.

    • @RonaldLil

      Ballack was no where near his best during the time of the 2010 world cup. He was barely starting matches at Chelsea due to injury, age was catching up with him. In fact Germany actually played better without Ballack than they did with him as it allowed new players like Muller and Ozil to flourish. Also you are forgetting Germany was missing several players during the semis against Spain, they were without Lahm and Muller (arguably their best player at that time)

  • @rorisangpitswane3595
    @rorisangpitswane3595 Рік тому +9

    As a South African I’ll put my perspective on this
    *1.* A lot of World Cups before us happened due to corrupt bids(also after us)it wasn’t just us, also unfortunately football in Africa and corruption has always been hand in hand…so as not only a South African but also an African I can tell you we feel no shame or guilt over it as that’s how you get things done in our continent sadly. It’s far better than using blood money from shady business ventures to bid for a WC only to treat migrant workers inhumanely and commit multiple human rights violations (*cough* Qatar *cough*)
    *2.* The Jabulani was a flawed ball but it forced people to play football more tactically, and increased the importance of each touch, each pass, each free kick and each corner. The ball being chaotic was able to draw on the emotions of the fans and create tense atmospheres…essentially by making the game harder it made it more entertaining
    *3.* As flawed as the ball was it definitely wasn’t the main reason why England, France and Italy stunk it up those teams were dysfunctional nightmares
    *4.* What you call “boring football” I call tactical masterclass, every movement was more purposeful and each game felt more like a chess match, it was a unique experience especially in the knockout stages. Tense and equal low-scoring games are preferred to one sided high scoring one sided games in a knockout tournament. If the FIFA 2010 World Cup was a league it would be terrible, but because it’s a knockout tournament it was exhilarating
    *5.* The “boring football” actually brought football back to its roots, in a way I’ll say how football was way back in the day with its simple mechanisms were forcibly used in the modern day making it a one of one tournament
    *6.* Not one World Cup had as many storylines as the 2010 WC, the World Cup is a special tournament because it’s more than football, it’s about stories. A teenage Pele taking the footballing World by storm, a brilliant Maradona carrying then Argentinian underdogs to victory, the World Cup is a competition that thrives off of “against all odds” storylines. If anything club football is about results but international football is about the journey…that’s why 2018 Russia is the least memorable out of the modern era because it was more akin club football than international football (it felt more like a Champions League then it did a World Cup).
    *7.* You pointed this out but aesthetically the 2010 WC is the best regarding cultural fusion, from the music, the vuvuzela’s, the dancing, etc.
    Point is, I respect and understand your opinions but I disagree with them. The fact that the 2010 World Cup was so unique is what made is phenomenal not what dragged it down. You put it brilliantly by saying that “it’s flaws is what makes it good”, however I don’t see it’s happenings as “flaws” but as “strengths”.

    But off pitch aside everyone who attended the world cup out of people I know have nothing but praise for it my uncle who's gone to every tournament Englands been in since 98 except 02 he said there was just something magic about SA tournament even though 360 minutes of football England played was absolutely shit he still absolutely loved it so where does it rank is all subjective in what you look for in football similar to how I think some will talk about this one it'll divide opinion

    Its really annoying to see people still call the Suarez incident cheating when a penalty was given immediately and he was sent off. Also lets not forget the fact that the play shouldn't even have happened in the first place since it came from a free kick out of a non-existent foul AND the Ghana attackers were offside when the free kick was taken.
    Plays like that are literally part of the game, but if thats cheating then any penalty given is cheating. If thats cheating the beloved "tactical foul" that for example City uses constantly is also cheating, since its intentionally breaking the rules to get an advantage and prevent scoring oportunities for the opponent. By that logic any foul is cheating.

    Is it possible that they didn't take the altitude on the Highveld into account when designing the Jabulani ball? It affects sports up here because of the way in which the rarified atmosphere makes the ball "zing" through the air. They seemed to have disregarded other aspects too, like the fact that June, July & August are winter months in SA and it gets pretty cold, especially along the Atlantic coast and in Gauteng & the Free State. Perhaps summer would have been risky because of the rains, but mid/late spring (October/November) would have been a decent option. I notice that they shifted the world cup in Qatar to autumn/winter. They could have arranged it better according to the seasons over here as well.

      The reason's for Qatar being shifted to November were far more extreme as compared to SA. Besides for most European teams it was expected that they'd play through reasonable playable weather as most times they play majorityof the season in fall/winter and ends in spring. Its not like they were blizzards in South Africa that would make play impossible as the sweltering heat in the gulf desert region. But its fifa doubt they gave a damn anyway

Messi and Ronaldo were practically invisible, none of the Brazilians like Kaka stood out, Rooney was awful, Eto’o’s Cameroon were poor, Ibra’s Sweden didn’t qualify, Ribery and France were crap, Drogba/Toure and the Ivory Coast got stuck in a brutal group and were poor, Gerrard + Lampard were average, Torres was a non factor. The only TOP players in the world at that point that showed up were Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, Robben, Sneijder, Schweinsteiger and Lahm. It was more a tournament for the likes of Forlan, Suarez, Muller, Higuain, Gyan
    Going into the tournament Spain were heavily predicted to win, which doesn’t necessarily make it a bad World Cup - provided they live up to everyone’s expectations. 4 1-0s in the KO just felt under whelming. They didn’t blow teams away or wow you with their football, and you never really felt like they were at risk. The final as well was a tough watch because the Dutch, who had been an excited team, just resorted to kicking the Spanish and playing to hit them on the counter (almost worked). It’s says everything that the only thing people remember from the 90 was De Jong’s kung fu kick.
    The 3 world cups that followed were unquestionably better in terms of on pitch product and drama. 2006 is a close one but I’d give that the narrow edge because at least entering the KO there were about 6/7 teams you felt could win it. 2002 I barely remember but at least that had some shocks, the shocks in this tournament was just teams being complete frauds and going home in the groups. My ranking of World Cups I’ve seen would be
    2022, 2014, 2018, 2006, 2002, 2010.

    Those bloody Vuvuzelas were the biggest irritation of the South African world cup.
