I have Sonance - Mariner 8" Passive 2-Way Outdoor Speakers powered by a Parasound amp ,one of my first jumps into separates and still functioning and looking brand new . Sound from the Sonance amazing hung up on the screen facing the house over the pool . residing in Florida 3 years now and they are working and looking great .
Love the show Gene, I have been using a pair of Bower & Wilkins AM-1's. They have been in a patio for the last 5 years and have stood up wonderfully. I drive them with a Sonos connect amp. My neighborhoods are pretty good about them, as I generally only use them at half volume. But when it's pumping you can get 4 blocks away without much distortion. I love playing them loud in a big rain storm, that way no one really knows. Take care.
I run JBL Control 31s outside. 10 inch woofer, they dig into the 30s. Hooked up to a 100 x 2 class D chip amp integrated, they sound good and can get loud enough to irritate my neighbors.
I've always liked the sound of Sonance. When I sold them back in the 90s, an anecdote (for which I cannot personally vouch) circulated that a still-working pair of Mariners survived the destruction of a house by Hurricane Andrew.
I have a pair of Advent I bought over 25 years ago they are mounted under the roof overhang above my deck they have a 5" woofer and 3/4" aluminum dome tweeters they sound nice driven by an Adcom GFA 535 on the zone 2 of my Marantz preamp.
I have these outdoors, not under a covered overhang, in New England. Winter was no match for these. They sound just as good today as when I first installed them. Running them off of the Sonos AMP. My only regret was not ordering 4 of them when I made the purchase as my deck is a weird shape and has a few areas where the seating is not in an ideal location.
I have a pair of these in a covered patio with Denon PMA-600ne. Good for outdoor, I think. Serving me well for TV use and for occasional party sessions.
Gene, I really enjoy Audioholics videos and tech equipment reviews. I currently use a pair of Yamaha NS-AW350W outdoors on my deck that I bought back in 2005 for about $100 and they still look and sound great. I power them with an old 2 channel Yamaha receiver R-1000 with 100 watts per channel RMS. This same unit also powers the rear presence speakers on my Yamaha RX-A3080 [7.2.4 setup) with my original Large Advent speakers with new 10" woofers and new soft dome tweeters. It sounds spectacular using your bass management tech advice!!! I could not be happier. Please continue your great work with your outstanding team! I watch your videos daily. Joe C
Thanks for the review(s) , always appreciate your thoughts and measurements! About a year ago I set my Mom up with a set of JBL Control 29 AV-1s for her patio, at the time I used a older Inkel MA620 (200wpc) and a Marantz SR8001 as a preamp. It sounded good and clear but didn't quite have the "Wow"factor , highs where great , bottom end not so much . So Christmas I gave her a Yorkville PX1700 (400wpc@ 8) , the wow factor is there now when you want it ! The amp is rated +/-1db 30hz to 20khz which is fine as the speakers are rated down to 46hz and I plan on using a subwoofer and crossing over at 80hz in the future . Sound quality is really good , clear and now has the punch in the chest mid bass , people love them (except one neighbor) . But her property is farm land and you can hear it perfect out to the edge of the fields and all around the outside house when it's cranked up ! They have withstood one Newfoundland winter so far quite well , no signs of corrosion, fading , or anything and they are mounted to the eave outside with no protection , and the ball mount system by JBL is fantastic 👏, thanks again Gene 👍
Awesome I’m actually in the market for outdoor speakers for my hot tub area. Would like something powered and with good wireless capability so I can easily stream from my phone but obviously with better sound quality than portable Bluetooth speakers.
These do look awesome, I have quite a few Sonance in ceiling/walls and the quality is great, not well known here in New Zealand outside the installer market, but all the ones I have seen have very high spec components/drivers and crossovers. Didn't quite have the budget to go with the Mariners for outside... I run a pair of Kef Ventura 5's running as B speakers from an amp in family room on their own inline impedance matching volume control. They sound very nice too, lack a little bass though (5" driver)... So a 10" custom sub fills in the low end in between both areas.
Gene, what do you use in your new AH Home did you stay with these 86s as you intended? I am looking at Mariner 86 vs their VPXT8R weather rated in-ceiling...torn between those two! For fun I am testing B&W AM-1 which is impressive radiator trick with a 5in woofer.
Hi Gene. Notice that the grill is off in some of the video. I have a patio roof so I think I may leave them off for sound quality purposes. Any downside to this? No rain or snow (I'm in Canada) will contact them and they are outdoor speakers.
Hey Gene, can you do a video on how wire gauge affects the sound? I have two sets of high quality Made in Japan 99.99% OFC speaker cables. They're both made by the same company and are identical, except that one is 10 AWG and one is 16 AWG. When listening to them, I can clearly tell that the 16 AWG sound a lot more lively at the top end and the treble is a lot more crisp and clear. When I run the 10 AWG cable, the bass sounds a lot more deeper and more powerful, but the treble is a lot more dull. Dialogue is also less crisp with 10 AWG. I have tested this on several speakers and amplifiers and the results are consistent. Can you investigate scientifically how smaller gauge sounds more crisp and clear on the high end and bigger gauge is better for bass?
I can see review on the new paradigm founder series maybe like the tower speakers 80 how do they sound with like the Kimber cable 8TC cuz I'm looking to buy them with pass labs integrated int 60
The Triad Amplifier doesn’t have a built-in EQ. The Triad Audio Matrix does, which you failed to mention. Also you failed to mention that the grill falls off all the time due to a poor design.

Yes I still have these under my Lanai first floor. Great speakers.

Sonance makes the Sonos outdoor speakers too, based on the Mariner series

How do these compare to the Focal outdoor speakers?
Look at Coastal Source bollard speakers. Best outdoor speakers hands down.
No way would I spend that much for an outdoor. Would like to see some cheaper alternatives. Thanks.

The grill has never fallen off in 2 years of using this speaker so I passed on that ;)
Yes port is not a good idea by could have a radiator
I looked at these and felt the Niles outdoors sounded better.
