I must have seen the real Dead about 50 times in the 80's. What a great band, what a great community, what a great time. Damn I miss those days. I will say I did see the John Meyer Dead a few times. Did gain some respect for the young man. Sure, Jerry was smiling down on the shows. Happy holidays to you all.
No, they were supposed to play in a big festival in France, so they came. But the festival was canceled due to poor meteo. So Michel Magne a famous figure of the French pop scene at this time, who had one of the best studio of Europe, in the castle of Herouville , invited to stay a few days to relax at home. They loved it, enjoyed a lot in particular, the studio and offered a free concert to Magne and friends. Magne was very special, did not bother with the Parisian show-business top notches ; instead he invited the local peoples, farmers, little near village inhabitants, etc... My god, I wish I would have attended this concert (peoples were seriously high, sometimes not knowing what they had received with the punch) and the firemen finished naked in the swimming pool!).
I was writing an alternate history story where Jerry died early and in your face brash Pig pen took the reins and besides just touring they really impacted history like John Lennon( who actually teams up with him at one point, uh , in the story). Well hilarity ensues but the world as we know it is much different, as in sans I showed up trophies or cancel culture.
Pigpen was the Blues Soul of the Band! Was never fortunate enough to see them when he was alive😢 Thanks for the excellent footage! Love live the GD and JGB!!❤
The Grateful Dead was so many different bands. In this incarnation (the original 5), six years on, they were red hot. Firing on all cylinders! Look at Phil's intensity, and Jerry's vocal delivery, let alone his playing. Pig nails Hard to Handle. Wished i could have seen this assemblage of talent. Born too late.
Agreed, they were so dynamic and unique. I love this era, before Mickey came back and there was so much subtlety and space in their music- Garcia really had room and shinned -cheers

Thanks this sounds SO SO GOOD! Mybfav years are 67 to 71 and 87 to 90. I subscribed too - can't wait to delve into that Miles Davis - you just "picked" my weekend music bro!
Best year of the dead this is when 🐷pigpen was at his peak right before his disease started messing with his health, and he was happily in love and together with his soul mate janis Joplin. May they be jamming and spending enterinty together on the other side
There needs to be a repository of these videos outside UA-cam so they don't get lost (to the public, I'm sure the band has a collection) when the poster deletes their account or video.
I love u Mr. Tobin for all the shows u have given us ! They r very special to me since 1969 I have been a Dead head but still had other music ! I used to b party central here on this island because I was the only one for a long time that had a house !
My God this is beyond great. Jerry’s rocking out big time. Such a great groove always in the rhythm section. Phil especially. I saw them around 10 times I think starting in 1975. Man oh man. All in California.

The original version of 'Sing me back home' is knocking about somewhere. I've heard it way back when. It was that rare creature - a song without a Garcia guitar break. This has been over-dubbed with another version here. There's a piano backing and a Garcia guitar break!
@@bunnybeckman8029 'I don't know what I'm talking about . . . I need to listen a little closer but . . . maybe . . . I could be right!' Well, here's the original, true version. Compare the two to see if I'm right or not. ua-cam.com/video/Mmn68l8h5oI/v-deo.html
@@bunnybeckman8029 You didn't hurt my feelings, Bunny. But I did want to show that I did know what I was talking about as I'd been thro' this song edit before with the very man who admitted He did the over dub - Sam Cutler, GD's manager in the early 70's. Sam posted the very same song on his FB page. When I made the same comments as I did to this post, he said, in short, 'Yeah, I did it'!
I’m sorry if I hurt ur feelings ? I didn’t mean to sound like I know everything , I don’t ? I’m still learning which is a good thing ! Please except my apology ?
The Grateful Dead were there on June 21, 1971 for one of their most exotic gigs. Jerry Garcia tells the story: "We went over there to do a big festival, a free festival they were gonna have, but the festival was rained out. It flooded. We stayed at this little chateau which is owned by a film score composer who has a 16-track recording studio built into the chateau, and this is a chateau that Chopin once lived in; really old, just delightful, out in the country near the town of Auvers-sur-Oise, which is where Vincent Van Gogh is buried. We were there with nothing to do: France, a 16-track recording studio upstairs, all our gear, ready to play, and nothing to do. So, we decided to play at the chateau itself, out in the back, in the grass, with a swimming pool, just play into the hills. We didn't even play to hippies, we played to a handful of townspeople in Auvers. We played and the people came - the chief of police, the fire department, just everybody. It was an event and everybody just had a hell of a time - got drunk, fell in the pool. It was great."
As long as we have these films and recordings from 1966-1974 of The Good Ol' Grateful Dead, we never have to worry about some ersatz cover band ruining anything.
It's so clear that Jerry and Bob are completely locked in with Pigpen, and they're just riding it out; none of them knowing where they're going to end up 😅😅😅 Edit: Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh were always right there with them, but, Pigpen 🤘😝🤘
I have always searched for anything with pigpen. Thank you
will you marry me

The color video of Pigpen singing Hard To Handle is absolutely sublime!!! Stay Grateful Fam!!!!

It’s surprising that they went to France in 71 for this and then came back for the big Europe 72 trek just months later.
