Taliesin is a delightful human being. Hearing him talk about playing Vampire: The Masquerade on Temple grounds was hilarious (if a bit scandalizing), and the interaction between him and the Vex cosplayer was absolutely the best player-fan interaction I have ever seen.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints myself, I have to wonder if they were actually doing it at the LA Temple itself or just at a regular church building. Because a regular meetinghouse has totally open grounds that would be easy to use for that sort of thing, and if the local ecclesiastical leaders (we have a ley ministry set-up, so we don't have paid clergy or anything) at the time were okay with letting people use them for that sort of thing on a day other than Sunday, then I don't think it would be that weird (unlike other Christian churches we've never had anything against D&D, LARPing, Halloween, haunted houses, fantasy in general, etc.). In fact, quite the opposite. For instance, my local congregation (we call them wards) when I was growing up would actually put on (family-friendly) Halloween parties with small and brief haunted houses (if you could even call it that when it was really just a room or two that was broken up with makeshift dividers and such made up to be spooky enough for tweens and younger) in the actual local ward meetinghouse.
Now, if it was on the actual temple grounds, that's different just because those are usually fenced off and, while open to the public during the day, would be closed at night. Not that it would be hard to get in anyway as we don't really go for heavy security and they usually are just surrounded with a very basic wrought-iron-style fence a few feet high or less that wouldn't be hard to jump by an enterprising group of teens. Although, if he knew some church members that were letting them in to do this, then maybe it was whoever was in charge of taking care of the grounds at the time and they were pretty chill and they just straight-up unlocked the gates for them. Also, it could be that that particular temple has an open area outside of the fenced-in part that acts as basically just a small park, like some of them do. Something like that would be easy to use at night or whatever without much hassle, but I don't know how that temple's grounds are laid out as I've never been to it in person. Looking at pictures of it, if that is indeed where his game was going on, then I think it's funny that people would want to use it as a site for Vampire LARPing as it's not at all gothic. More of a blocky 70's aesthetic (as I'm sure that's about the time it was built). Which is another reason I wonder if they were just at normal church building as those would be a little more suitable for that kind of thing vibe-wise, although still pretty plain and not very traditional in their design compared to other church's buildings. Also, there's no crosses to speak of as we shy away from using that kind of iconography (we like to focus on the living Christ rather than a symbol of his torture and death).

Yeah, I'm way late for that answer, but: Hanibal Lecter would be definetely LAWFUL Evil. He is not a psychotic maniac. He is a complete psychopath, but he has a modus operandi and his own twisted code of conduct. He wouldn't become a famous psychiatrist and a public persona otherwise.

What Taliesin said about writing backstories could not be more true. Write the least amount you can that still gives the DM a framework. Trust that your dm will flesh it out in ways you didn't even think about. The Briarwoods and Percy's backstory is the best example.

    Questions:
10:28: Taliesin, is your willingness to hide secrets from the other players a Percy trait, or a Taliesin trait?
11:35: What were the conditions for Percy coming back?
13:25: Matt, how many hours of prep time do you do?
15:40: Matt, what advice do you wish you knew when you started DMing?
17:45: Will the Gunslinger be made a full class in the Exandria sourcebook, or are you sticking to keeping it an archetype?
20:10: Just a DM running a concept of a support-style Gunslinger by the guys.
23:04: Guys, has your experience as a D&D player/actor/etc melded into your other careers?
26:05: How would you leave a game that isn't working out for you?
29:20: Any RPG systems you love aside from D&D?
32:49: Not counting Critical Role, what's your most notable experience at the table?
37:53: What are your experiences with That Guy?
41:00: What's your favourite alignment to play?
44:00: How do you split the character focus so that everyone gets to shine?
49:20: Any tips on trying to break accidental metagaming?
54:50: Matt, have you had any characters that just fell apart when they entered the game?
56:50: Percy, did you actually hear what went on during the resurrection?
58:40: How do you feel that the Internet has helped the image of D&D evolve from the basement dweller image?
1:03:46: What can you do to help manage large D&D groups?

My DM did the thing to me about spinning my character's origins around 180 degrees. Some of the details are little foggy, so some of this might not be 100% accurate.
Initially, my character Ani-Bow was raised by a Fey order called the Order of Creature Specialists. They have different outposts throughout the material plane and a few others, such as the Feywild, which is where they originate from. The different outposts are for specific types of creatures/races (vampires, dragons, beasts, drow, celestials, etc..). Ani-Bow's village, or sub-order, was the Order of Fiend Specialists.
Ani-Bow was initially told by the chief, his trainers, and mentors that his parents were general civilians that willingly gave him up as a child, to the order, for the common good of all existing life (which seems pretty reasonable).
It turned out that Ani-Bow's parents were a King and Queen of a kingdom and that he was a prince. A couple of the main villains had a beef with Ani-Bow's parents (for reasons still unknown) and attacked the kingdom. My entire party ended up getting sent back in time right around before the battle took place (more than a hundred years prior).
After a handful of things happening, the party started to figure out that the baby that resided in the castle was Ani-Bow as an infant. Instinctively, Ani-Bow grabbed his younger self out of his dying mother's arms and was lead into a secret passage that led to an underground city.
After a brutal scuffle between Ani-Bow and a minion, to the point where he mutilated him (he went down to Neutral-Good for it), it turned out that the Order of Fiend Specialists were down in the city doing some business of their own. Ani-Bow approached them and told them to take the baby and take care of him. He also told them to tell the baby anything they can to protect him from the horrors that happened to his family. It was quite emotional.
During that part of the arc, he also learned that his last name was Feyrin. Bow was his given last name from the Order. The Order has a tradition that your given surname is replaced by the name of a weapon or fighting style that you specialize in. This is done to help protect the families of those in the order.

"For whoever survives, it's going to be awesome"
Yes! A thousand times yes! Had a player in a party once that would really lean into these moments. He was an experienced player and the rest of the party were new. I had dropped hints when describing a certain item that it might be cursed, but he stayed in character and picked it up because it would've made sense for his character to do. Long story short, it was a Berserker Axe and the next fight was GLORIOUS. That session turned out to be one that the players didn't soon forget.

12:33 Asmodeus would disagree. In fact, it's a major point of his backstory that he feeds on the souls of atheists that end up in the bottom level of Hell, because they have no where else to go. There are entire groups of cultists and devils devoted to not only corrupting mortal souls but also trying to cause them to lose faith in or be disillusioned with the gods even to the point of convincing them that they aren't real.

I've had some large groups and my advice is that you should set up circumstances where it makes sense for characters to discuss the situation for a long time, and then come to a unified decision. Create an environmental puzzle or have them witness a political event and let them suss out the possibilities for a while. Then they get on with the solution and the game moves forward. Just magnify the puzzle/discussion element, basically.

Rifts is such a great game, but with a great GM and players it can be so great. I do agree that the system isn't very good, but it can still be fun.

I played a Chaotic Evil Wizard. But I went the more cerebral route. You don't need mass slaughter as an evil character.
I was kinda like the character that Taliesin described. Not everyone liked me because I was a Tiefling.
Remember alignments just have ideas or concepts of how you can play you can still work within there.

In my group, we have a rotating roster of like 10-12 people. This is due to work, school and occasionally family. Sometimes people show up late in the session or have to leave early. Sometimes people don't show up for weeks or months at a time, due to the things listed above. Besides the DM, there are two people that show up 99% of the time. Myself being one of the two, since we host it at my house.
There are the uncommon weeks where there is like 5 people. There are also weeks where we have like 10.
I think the most we ever had was like 16. I wanted to jump out my second story window :P
The average amount of players we have, throughout an entire session, is like 8.
It is really difficult for everyone to focus and for everyone to get their time to shine. There is a plot in our campaign, but we, as a party, have like no idea what is going on. It's always so loud that we miss enough of what the DM is saying that we have had to resort to start making a place/item/NPC index for the campaign.

    • @zedre7633
      @zedre7633 8 років тому

Yeah, in large groups it's really important that everyone knwos when to shut up and pay attention to the DM. And it's important that the DM knows how to create an interesting enough narrative to enrapture the players and captivate their attention, and maybe punish them a little if they miss important plot points.

    • @wuzzy41123
      @wuzzy41123 8 років тому

Yeah, we're trying various things to help with all that kind of stuff. A couple out of the dozens of things we've tried have helped, but not much has. It''s a long and stressful process.

mooxim Eder from Pillars of eternity is pretty standard city guard fighter type, but the others he voices I can't place as Dnd characters. (the game is nuts, you can basically have a party all voiced by Matt :p)

48:20 my current caracter was a dueregar . and i had never made any decent backstory and my DM insisted i make one .. so my first ever real backstory (it was more slighty more specific than what im about to write) i was raised in a normal dueregar town wich got attackd by dwarfes becaus apperantly we were evil and all had to die (my caracter was 5 at the time and dwarfs/dueregar are considerd adults at 50 so i could be wrong could be right) but becaus they "had pity" they enslaved most of the children i was a slave until the age of 36 at wich point i stole a hammer/maul and bashd 1 head in ran onto the surface where i decided to travel with some Merchants until the age of 52 where i encounterd the party.
pretty much open to the DM but also alot for me to develop as a player

great talk, but I have to defend paladium. I fun a heroes unlimited 2nd edition game.
rifts is a system that you have to use the common sense rules of thought to. As well as books you are going to allow and not allow.
I don't mix other rifts books with my heroes unlimited game, that do what Matthew and taliesin suffered though.
