We have enjoy our world tour of 37 countries in the last 25 years. In 2012 we returned back to the big Island of Hawaii and bought a small cottage. For 2 Years we using Hawaii as our home-base.
You can drive your car around the lake area and Guadalajara without problems. If you are going to another city, just take a plane or a bus and avoid all this nonsense. First of all, it is much cheaper by avoiding the crazy high tolls, especially if you use your Inapam card by getting 50% discount on bus travel. The airline tickets are also very reasonable. Secondly, you can just relax knowing that they can' t swindle you when you are traveling on a bus.
that's good advice. We like to drive her car because then we can explore different areas that we cannot use in the bus system also we like to take our food along with us because Lori has some restrictions on what she can eat. But I am reconsidering your suggestion more and more.

My advise is never pay a bribe, always ask for a ticket, if you are driving in Mexico install a dash cam. Yes, that is a hassle, but it is the right way to handle the situation. If you did do something wrong pay the ticket with the court. The problem comes when people on both sides try to get out of doing what is right. I have been stopped multiple times, multiple officers have asked for bribes I never give them. They have threatened to take the car but I still tell them I want the ticket. I am always polite but I insist on the correct process. Haven't gotten a ticket yet. I have had to apologize a few times when I was in the wrong. In those times too I asked for a ticket, luckily I was given a warning.
This is the absolutely best way to handle the situation. The police don’t want to deal with giving you a ticket so they slowly back off.

The police is not the mafia or the cartel, there wanted for arrest, that is based on the individual and its up to you to pay or go to the police station and pay and if cought can loss there job so report it and pay the ticket, the reason the police will have you follow them to the police station is to pay the ticket becouse tourist are known for trashing the ticket, especially in border cities, you not going to jail so dont be bluffed, there not going to knock you over the head and steal your money, its not knowing and your own fears that play into this situation and remember you did not get stop for nothing, I dont know what the out of circulation ticket cost, be as a incentive, I would think to keep those cars off the read as port of the traffic congestion, you really dont even need a vehicle, there's all kinds of public transpiration in Mexico live in Mexico for 47 years an Anglo American, usually I'm able to talk my way out, I said talk not pay, I know how to deal with that situation, I very seldom get pull over and when I do I know I did something, many people do a rolling stop so depends how fast your rolling and can be stopped and giving a ticket want you have a feel for driving in Mexico its easy every one is looking out for the other driver, it can make you a professional driver its take al lease 25 years to really know Mexico (as an adult) your still green behind the ears

We came to your lovely wife’s talk about escaping the Khmer Rouge at the LCS. This is the exact reason we have decided not to have a car in Mexico. Tricycles and golf carts only for us. Besides, we can be in charge of our ground, transportation via taxi and bus and Uber for less than the price of owning a car. Besides, I’m close enough to Walmart to walk or drive golf cart.
It sounds like you have created a beautiful lifestyle for yourself less complicated and more fun. You're fine there's always a way to go the way to go.

You must never have driven a motorbike around Chiang Mai. Police checkpoints everywhere, and yes, the cops are crooked.
Thailand now has a growing crime problem in many areas. It's all over.
Regardless of the many beautiful places to visit in Mexico I abstain of going there. I like to be in a safer place, although, where I live is not completely free of some insecurities especially robberies, but I’m staying right here in the safety of the city where I am now in USA.
Everybody has their own comfort song. Lori and I tend to push the envelope and choose to explore different countries we feel this keeps us young and living a life of passion.

I demand a written Ticket and then I get out of my car film them with my phone and my car's dash cam along with a picture of their vehicles. They get to talking even more and finally get into their vehicles and leave. Had to do this three times over a dozen years driving here in Mexico.
Once near Nuevo Laredo, once in Guadalajara, and once near Zacatecas.
I don't think I'm brave enough to do that. It was about eight motorcycle policeman surrounding us in our vehicle and we definitely were intimidated. I didn't stop by when policeman in that case I would take your advice.
