I see so many people who don't clean the surface of engine where filter goes there is always ring of dirt around there and sometimes old gasket or pieces of it get stuck to surface.
I at least put some oil in filter it can be 3/4 full and if you slowly rotate it all the oil is on outside of filter media and none will spill out even on horizontal mounted filters.
it is usually a good idea to change the gasket on drain plug so it seals better.

This oil change can save you a considerable amount of money compared to the dealership, or even the quik-lube places. Plus you know next time, the plug and filter aren’t over-tightened.
